Hi guys
The air con in my 1995 accord died last summer. It started out working intermittently then eventually wouldn't blow cold air at all. Recently I took the car to an a/c workshop and the guy there after experimenting for a few hours told me a few things:
at first the compressor wasn't powering up, but after fiddling with the electricals he got this working.
He evacuated the gas and tried to re-gas however couldn't get it working because the TX valve had a blockage and would have to be replaced. He wasn't able to do this and suggested I take it to Honda.
I went to the Honda dealer and told them what the a/c shop said. Honda said they would do their own diagnosis as they "tend not to rely on other people's diagnoses, especially people who repair fridges". So I let them do their own diagnosis which was as follows:
Checked a/c operation, found compressor working ok, fitted gauges to a/c system & found system to be low on gas. Will need to evacuate system of any gas & replace receiver dryer & regas system & check for any leaks. Receiver dryer $120 + $100 labour + $99 gas
I took the car back to them today to go ahead and carry out the above. When I picked the car up they told me it's not fixed as the compressor has "shit itself", they will need to replace the compressor and the TX valve which will cost $1250.
Sorry for the long post, but basically what I want to know is if this sounds like Honda (a) is being completely honest, (b) don't know what they are talking about, or (c) are trying to rip me off. I find it strange that their first diagnosis states the compressor was working ok.
Would it be easy for me to take a look myself to see whether the compressor is working properly or not?
Any other advice?
Should I just cough up and pay the $1250?
All help greatly appreciated!
