Hi guys

The air con in my 1995 accord died last summer. It started out working intermittently then eventually wouldn't blow cold air at all. Recently I took the car to an a/c workshop and the guy there after experimenting for a few hours told me a few things:
at first the compressor wasn't powering up, but after fiddling with the electricals he got this working.
He evacuated the gas and tried to re-gas however couldn't get it working because the TX valve had a blockage and would have to be replaced. He wasn't able to do this and suggested I take it to Honda.

I went to the Honda dealer and told them what the a/c shop said. Honda said they would do their own diagnosis as they "tend not to rely on other people's diagnoses, especially people who repair fridges". So I let them do their own diagnosis which was as follows:

Checked a/c operation, found compressor working ok, fitted gauges to a/c system & found system to be low on gas. Will need to evacuate system of any gas & replace receiver dryer & regas system & check for any leaks. Receiver dryer $120 + $100 labour + $99 gas
I took the car back to them today to go ahead and carry out the above. When I picked the car up they told me it's not fixed as the compressor has "shit itself", they will need to replace the compressor and the TX valve which will cost $1250.

Sorry for the long post, but basically what I want to know is if this sounds like Honda (a) is being completely honest, (b) don't know what they are talking about, or (c) are trying to rip me off. I find it strange that their first diagnosis states the compressor was working ok.

Would it be easy for me to take a look myself to see whether the compressor is working properly or not?

Any other advice?

Should I just cough up and pay the $1250?

All help greatly appreciated!

hi dude

1250 is a bargain for the compressor and tx valve. my guess is they will use non gen or recon compressor and maybe a gen TX valve

as for testing it your self, you need the guages to test the aircon, its all in the pressures

sure you can force the compressor to engage but if it wont do so on its own, it could be because of an electrical problem or the low gas, faulty thermostat.

with out looking at it, you cant tell.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you think it sounds realistic that the first time they looked at it the compressor was ok and now it apparently doesn't work at all? and the a/c workshop also told me the compressor was ok. Maybe it's just the TX valve that needs replacing like the a/c workshop said originally? Sorry if this sounds dumb but I don't know too much about this kind of thing, I just like to get a bit of an understanding before I spend lots of $$$ on repairs and stuff.

Its not uncommen for hardware like AC compressers to be running fine one day and suddenly just stop working for seemingly no reason.
the compresser does a very difficult job under very hard enviromental conditions (ie, the high heat) and its just not looked after (minimal cleaning, servicing)
The compresser on my own 94 model accord is still going however it doesn't get as cold anymore (its now owned by my brother) hes recently had it serviced and regassed and it now gets the car very nipply on a cool day.

if you want it fixed get it done, that price is a good one and it sounds about right for an AC unit.

i have a similar problem with my 87 accord. haven't had it looked at yet but the air con hasn't worked ever since i bought the car a few months back. the guy said it just needed to be regassed but i can't notice the air con kick in at all when i hit the switch. if it were needing a regas it would still turn on but just not blow cold air right?

Id be opening up the yellow pages ringing up wreckers or air con. specialists.!

i would even think about taking my car to honda to get repaired unless it is covered by warranty!
