Hi there

i am having problems with starting my civic si, everytime i try to start it in a hot day, the engine wont turn on, you can hear the starter motor trying to click...... then i leave it off for 20min to 30 min and then it starts, in cold mornings it starts fine

i have check the charge of the battery and it seem fine....

i assume that the starter motor is busted..... it has been the original starter motor since 1991 or 285,000 kms

any recommendations??

how much does a starter motor cost for a d16a8??

a cheap place to start would be the fuel regulator (check the DIY guides). Its right near your bonnet release on the drivers side, just get a 10mm (i think) and remove it, check for any solder damage.. if there is resolder and go from there. If theres no damage, then your probably spot on with the starter motor. Id check the fuel reg as it will take a whole 2 minutes of your time, cost you nothing and could be the whole problem.

sounds like main relay is busted. (fuel regulator as James calls it above)
(heats up , wont start , when its cool = fine).
Check it - check the condition of the solders on the covered side.

if your stater motor only clicks and does not crank/turn the engine over, then your solenoid of your stater motor needs some TLC, or also the brushes are worn and one is not makinng contact to the armature of the motor.

I have fixed stacks of solenoids in th past with out chaning anything,

if your solenoid is the type you can pull apart and you keen, let me know

yep it sounds like a solenoid problem to me. mine was real bad. WHat happens is what ppl do up the 12v line that goes to the starter, they sometime overdo it. THe mechanic did this to mine, and when i undid it it destoryed alot of stuff. It would click sometimes like u decribed, othertime it would start. very intermittant. If ur not DIY i think bren said he had a few lieing around.

ECUMAN: when u say bushing, what parts do u mean? Like the copper bits which join together to transfer 12v?

so if it spins and doesn't crank - only problem could be the starter itself?

could it be due to something else at all?

If it's clicking though (and the motor isn't turning) it's most likely the starter or a poor supply to it like John said.

It's the brush(es) actually. They probably aren't contacting the armature properly (possibly worn). Also check all your starter connections (disconnect the battery first) to make sure they are done up and connected properly. Also make sure your battery is good.

starter connections - there is only 2 correct?

12v and another coming from the engine harness?

kind of like a speaker clip

yep. jump the 12v to the speaker clip. that will activate the starter.

sorry, not sure what u mean jump?

as in give it 12v directly to the speaker clip?

sorry i ment main fuel relay not reg

ok well i fed 12v directly to the end where the speaker clip goes and all i hear is the rotor spinning.

no cranking of the motor?

wat could explain this?

driving me nuts here.

dude
I wrote brushes not bushes

but yes the contacts in the solenoid will be the main culpruit

i think read someware where you wrote about how this happens when you butcher the nut for 12v feed

sorry for bumping old thread but i didn't wanna start a new thread about the same problem.

A few times it's happened where the starter motor would just click and not even turn. Just a very loud click. But after a couple times it started. WELL the other night i was "racing" my mates VTi sedan that he just got. Winding out the gears etc, so the engine was pretty hot, after we got to his house, the car wouldn't start, starter motor would just click very loudly. (only once for each time a turned the key past accessories)

ANYWAYS, his neighbour was sayin its the solenoid in the starter motor or whatever and after it cools down it'll start. sure enough about 1 1/2 hours later it was starting again. I'm getting my mechanic to replace my starter motor tho...
