I am looking into a set of rims 18" X 7.5 in 40 offset or 48 offset to fit with 235/40R18 tyres
will there be any problem in fittment or look wise? which one will be better?

48 is the way to go, I used to have +45 and the wheels come out around 10mm, +48 will make the wheels more flushed to the guard... No way a +40 is going to fit nicely so I'd advise against that...

StGeorge tyres told me that 18" .40 offset with 225/40 tyres would be fine at standard ride height. 225/40 tyres are only 0.8% larger overall than standard fitment, so 235/40 would be a little more out but not much.

no no no no they must be wankers plus it is illegal ..i have 18x8 with +45 offset with 225/40/18s and they sit flush..so in your caes +48 not the 40 will fit well.

I wasnt too sure either, i thought it was a bit too far out, as most seem to go .48 with larger rims. Cheers

what i am worrying is if the rims are out too much, it will hit when I am lowering my car later
tyres are fixed to 235/40
rims size also fixed 18"X7.5
now is all depends on the offset
42 or 48

if you have a choice go +48 for sure
im looking at rims too! what brand are you guys getting, and how much? i really like the buddyclub lineup, so sexy, but so expensive at the same time...

If you plan to lower your car, and don't want to trouble with scraping the guards, go with +48 offset...
Get lighter rims if you can afford them.. I really notice the increase in fuel consumption and slower acceleration since change to 18". but hey, they look way better than 16" for sure!

how wide are the stock 17s on my 05? and can you go to a 8" wide rim?

dont worry about that ... once you've lowered your car then your car will automatically camber negatiely.
my recommendation is :
18 x 8 or 8.5
offset 42 (40 wouldn't be a big deal).
my other recommendation :
get 19" x F8.5 and R9.5
Offset 45 and 40
Cheers.

Here's where I sound like a fuddy-duddy wowser... :)
Listen to the advice of wheel and tyre professionals: they say what they say for reasons -- like keeping your car legal so it won't be defected and because they're more aware of the safety issues.
In my opinion, really fat rubber is a waste of money on a 140 kw NA road car: you'll chew them out much faster and you're much more likely to aquaplane in the wet. If you can only afford cheap rubber, you're defeating the purpose of upgrading...
Different widths for front and rear make sense on a RWD -- they make no sense on a front wheel drive.
The factory rims are 16x6.5 or 17x7: in most states (I think) you can be defected for putting on wheels that are more than an inch wider or two inches larger in diameter. Some insurance companies also get particularly picky as soon as you hit 8 inches or greater.
I would stick with the 18 x 7.5 and I wouldn't go wider than 8 (I'm sorry, but I think 9.5 on a Euro is just stupid). I don't know too much about what the best offset would be, but remember it will be different for 7.5 than for 8. Take the shop's advice because you don't want to get it wrong. Anything that protrudes past the guards can be defected.
Buy the best rubber you can afford but be aware that you're going to be replacing it more often. I'd go with a 225 40, but you'll probably find a bigger range of 235 40 because that's what Commodores and Falcons with factory 18s run. Your speedo will be marginally out, but it's generally a little slow on stock anyhow.
Too much camber in any direction results in uneven tyre wear.
But my approaches to driving are more practical and safety-conscious, and less cosmetic... :)

Couldn't agree more Tobster. Wheels are there to aid in braking, handling and acceleration. I agree that 9.5" wheels on a Euro does look silly and very inpractical.
18*7.5 or 8 would be nice.

Great advice - give you some rep points for that
Personally I prefer 235 wide tyres (I have tried 225). The 235 bulges the rim much better to protect my jap rims. Wish I never got the 225s now I have seen the protection the 235 gives. The other bonus with 235s is that it is a common size - i am running the XR8 tyres at the moment and I can tell you they are much cheaper to source than 225 tyres (or even the stock 16" Euro size).

Now i have decided to order a set of 5Zigen rims in 18X7.5
http://www.5zigen.co.jp/product/wheel/becketts_fn01r_c/index.html
but the site said Euro should use 42 offset
so 42 or 48 assume i MUST use 235/40 tyres

As i stated in another thread, I have 18x7 speedy lite golds. They were a good price and have a low mass. I think they are 45 offset, the fit very nicely. I have 225/40 falkens, and using a GPS to measure I now have a speedo within 2% of actual. It was under by about 4% with stock 16 inch.
My fuel consumption and acceleration is excellent with the lighter weheels and no scrubbing. Thats why I stuck to 7 inch wide. Im 110% happy. cheers
