Because the heater core is acting like a 2nd radiator dissipating the heat.

just a side note
if ur car IS overheating... a quick way of cooling ur car down is to turn the heater full ball... fast temporary fix if ur stuck in traffic and cant pull over

it sounds like there is something wrong with ur thermostat
thermostat controlls the amount of water circulation to cool ur block
it could be stuk open or mebe the previous ouner desided to hiflow it with a few drill holes
because ur motor should never get colder than approx 1/4 temp gauge
some food for thaught anyways
thermostats are like 30-50 dollars for hondas but some others may be alot cheaper

The heater core connections are before the thermostat so the heater would be getting cold not the motor temp. The thermostat has to open in order to get constant heat in side the car. I would check to make sure you have a thermostat.

Yeah its possible its a Thermastat problem.
Or maybe the coolant level is very low and a temp sensor is not receiving any coolant while the heater is on.
Check the coolant level in the reserviour - make sure its above MIN and below MAX.

i dont think this is the problem as it would most likely cause the car to overheat and not cool down

I thought it was the other way around.. I use to turn the aircon on and it cooled my engine

No when the themostat is stuck open the car is not allowed to heat up to operating temp. This is generall why most people take out their themostats to keep the car cooler. The only problem is you won't get a consistent temp for operating purposes as the coolant is flowing continuosly around the engine and radiator core.

I would say the thermostat is missing and having the extra radiator(your heater core disappating heat) the temp drops really quick. Check your radiator water level and overflow bottle level when the motor is dead cold(early morning is best)
