View Full Version : OBD ECU's

I was reading somewhere a while back, about modifying the OBD (can't remember which) ECU of a Honda.
Basically by swapping the ROM chip with other data.

Now, I am wondering, the rev cut is stored in that chip? Does that mean that the rev cut can be raised, and then a piggyback used to tune the car?

Please no comments like "just buy a standalone ECU"
I am just curious to find out if this would work or not, and don't plan on raising the rev limiter unless I do cams, and forged everything... (which I don't think will be happening, bar winning the lottery or something)

your assumption is spot on.

Doesn't it depend on what version ecu u have? i know that i can't do a lot of things as i have obd II ecu which, i believe, means u can't get access to that side of things.

Yes,
that is true also.

OBD0 and OBD1 are the most common and easily modified ECU's.
OBD2 can be supported, but in all honesty, the time & hastle involved is not worth the hastle.

If there's enough demand for chipping OBD2 ECU's I may start supporting basic chipping and vtec/redline changes.

it could still be OBD1.
Certain '96models were OBD1, depending on build date.

You really need to pull the ECU and read the serial number on the casing.
Then "search" the web or this forum for answers.

Thats enough spoon feeding for today.

can i still get hondata???

Hondata will require you to swap to a OBD1 ecu but you can still get it yes.

i just been reading up about ecu's etc, and just wanna know about the different OBD ecu's, and what they do and which cars have what
and why u would do a OBD2->OBD1 conversion
thanks

OBD2 ecus are post 96, they were introduced with something to do with emissions. the cars ecu "learns" about breathing mods done and then can adjust to not alter emissions, this is kinda detuning itself.

changing to obd1 is usefull because obd1 ecus are much easier modified for tuning, something liek hondata is only available for obd1 ecus (besides k series hondata units) so u must do an odb1 conversion (usual option would be the p28 because of its availability and affordability).

im gonna shutup coz i dont know this stuff really well by explaination but heres a good link for ecu definitions

what else do you want to know? Pretty self explainatory what everyone has already said.
