Hey guys quick question, if I simply change my standard air filter with a k&n filter and keep it in the airbox will I get a louder induction noise? Will I be able to hear it? Or would I have to remove the airbox?

Thanks bro's.

yes you will hear it more
if you are after a loud induction noise you will have to remove the box
but it will get loauder with the k&n or any other high flow filter

The box acts as a resonator so it silences the noise. Just changing the filter will do little if nothing. Switching the intake to a CAI or Ram or whatever and removing the box will allow you to hear a lot from the intake.

No need to remove the box. Just remove the cover.
Noise a plenty! :D :D :D

Even with stock filter - less cover = good noise.:D :D :D

Get an Injen intake. Since fitting my RD1450, omg, it's sex on wheels :)

I have to stop VTEC'ing as much due to people orgasms when i drive past them (health and safety concern)

Not sure on the "tuned" applications in an N/A car, buut i am sure that is more to do with the intake length then the filter used.

Have a look at this comparison, it will explain to you where my bias come from.

That test was done in japan, not the UK, here is a link that that was translated from

Oh also, if you want to know, in my car i kept the stock airbox (turbo car, two induction mods in victoria.. cops etc) and replaced the filter with a pipercross panel filter. Pipercross make the best panel filters around.

If you want to increase incduction noise remove some of the baffling from the airbox, it does a lot.

Pipercross is also good because its dual layer (traps big AND small dirt particles) in seperate layers (less prone to clog). Also, it is washable.

Good luck on your choice.

No filter has MAD indudction noise...if you are dareing.

Nice article Domokun, maybe I'll start looking for an apexi pod. :D

I'm really surprised at the hks filter, it dosen't really.....filter that good.

So would I get 14hp if I put the apexi filter or is that just on a specific car?

it depends on the car and what mods have been done. You will not get 14HP on every engine. If u put it on a lawn mower it would not gain 14HP.

^^^^ Hahaha lawn mower, so do you think I'll get at least 5-7hp?

you wont notice the difference if you put a filter in ..
its like driving with normal unleaded and 100RON premium you will feel that its abit more responsive on the gas but other than that its not much difference

A filter will help to the degree that its not a restriction any more. So you will get bigger gains from other modifications. Personally, i dont count anything thats a simple bolt on as a modification(apart from a turbo), as its just removing a restriction somewhere (exhaust, FMIC etc). I think a real mod is porting, or new turbo, or head work, stroking etc.

For the person that said you wouldnt feel 1hp, thats right, but look at the pure filtering of each filter. The K&N is below the Apexi standard, and Apex kits these days are about $150 which is the same as K&N really. So overall its still a better filtering filter :)

Ive always knows HKS to be shit. After time it starts breaking up and getting sucked into the car.

Yea obviously i realise that but with K&N range..i think part no. E2427 is a straight slip in filter that doesnt need any modding of flexi pipe or nothing...it has a kinked neck on it the same as the stock filter. Just asking if Apexi manufacture similar to this...

look for a cheap SRI and replace the cheapo filter with a APEXi or K & N,
and make up your own barrier to stop it suking in hot air.

that setup looks pretty kool...K&N one was different tho..filter n neck were all one part and the neck flange slides into stock flexi pipe..i think ill just end up sticking with the K&N filter tho..still a good filter and alot easier to access

thanks for all your help tho guys

I will, I haven't got it yet because my mate got me a good deal on some stereo stuff that I couldn't pass up so I'm spending my money on that for the moment. :D
