View Full Version : Conversions. Easier/harder into an EK than an EG?

Hey guys. Sorry about my WTB post, it was a tad harsh and I didnt exactly mean to lash out at people on this board. Anyway back to topic..

At this point in time, the car I was going to buy has been postponed, so am contemplating buying either an EG Si, VTi, or GLi and putting a B18C in, or buying an EK Civic Coupe (Not VTiR.. EM1 I think the model is?) and putting a B18C in that at a later stage. If I got the EG, the conversion would be done fairly quickly, if I bought the coupe the conversion would be done after some time (when I got enough funds hehe).

Now my question is, more often than not you see a lot of EG hybrids, but not a lot of EK's. Any particular reason for that? Cost? Lack of parts for the conversion?

If a coupe is roughly the same price in costs, I think later on I would be happier with that because a coupe is a bit "rarer" than an EG hatch..

the reason you dont see a lot of EK hybrids is cos of lack of funds i guess. but itll cost about the same cos the same amount of thing needs to be changed in both of them.

it would be easier if you had a vtir civic. cos all you do is pull out the one motor (b16) put in the b18 and get a b18 ecu. then youre done.. did i lie boys??

Obviously if I had a VTiR it'd be easily done, but I dont so this wont be happening. The seller of the car I was going to buy is selling in July, so I might just wait until then to see what pops up. I might get in contact with some people who have done these freaky conversions before and see what they have to say. If anyone wishes to publicly state what they have done and how much it cost, and who performed it for you that'd be great reading for all of us :)

Buy a Gli leave the sticker on there, and chuck in a b18c, and if its available, the numebr plate SLEEPA

Its tempting man, but its the availibility of all these parts. Nobody has really made a sticky or something of the sort of what parts are exactly required for a conversion, so i'm left with no idea on costs etc :(

Its a tricky route to take, wait 3 mths and have a real EG6, or buy a GLi and throw a B18C in it :(

True true my friend. But then again an EG6 wouldnt look too different anyway. And I was planning on putting on some rims/ dumping it when I got it anyway..

I'll ring around to some workshops and see what my options are.. Thanks mate :D

what do you want to do to the engine is the other thing dude?
I've been on this track for so long... pretty much just after i baught my car about 2 years ago now. I've got a few reasons for wanting the B16a, mainly coz my cars cop bait and i'm legally fine with the b16a. The other thing is that b16s are cheap at the moment where as b18s are way to expencive so by the time its in i wont have money for even small mods. Considering i'm looking at the same sort of power either way the choice was easy.

The SiR is a far better car(performance aside) than the GLi to. Your getting a pure JDM car so the workmanship is going to be better, you get better features (auto climate full stereo options better boot better inside panels) and other such features that cars in aus only started getting mid 90s. Performance wise, Well you get better everything over the GLi not to mention 4 wheel disks.

Last point, once you've baught it, theres nothing left to do except mod the crap out of the engine and you should get decent power out of a JDM b16a and in the end on a limited budget (based on what i said above) you will get more power out of it because theres no need to spend $3K+just buying the engine (and if your a lazy kent) another $3K on the transplant. Hope that helps dude... Oh and how do you intend on fitting your bike in a civic? :P

or buy a GLi and throw a B18C in it
Throwing it in might be easy but finding one to throw in is the chalenge, I havn't seen one in melbourne (wreckers) in over a year now.

as honda parts/engines are fairly interchangeable, whether you buy the ek or the eg is going to be about the same... but as mrjdm said, the ek is going to cost you more money... unless your willing to spend more on a ek hybrid :D

also the EK hb is heavier than the EG, so ppl go the EG.

B18c rapes the b16a, peak power yeah theres not much difference between the b16a and b18c, but the low and mid range of the b18c sh1ts all over the b16a.

i dont see why u would bother with a b16a conversion, if ur going to conert midas well go the big brother and get the b18c in there or dont do it at all.
