Aim: to make current rims look sexy :D

Required: 1 can of primer, 1 can of clear coat, 2-3 cans of black gloss wheel spray and some sand paper.

Currently wat it looks like :thumbdwn:

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5190/dsc001879hg.jpg

Step 1 :
So firstly we taped the lip with normal masking tape and then again with newspaper so it covers the tyre and lip.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/2059/dsc000010kw.jpg

Step 2:
after that we applied a coat of primer, couldnt be stuffed sanding down first b4 primer but is an option.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/7221/dsc000036rm.jpg

Step 3:
wait until primer drys and check if all surface has been covered, then start applying the black coat of paint like this

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/333/dsc000049az.jpg

Step 4:
After applying a few coats of black so all is covered, wait until it is COMPLETELY dried. then apply Clear coat same as Step 3 but with the clear coat can. try to add an extra coat every 20-30 mins up to around 3-4 coats of clear coat.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/4046/dsc000064uz.jpg

when completely dried remove masking tape to uncover sexy lip

http://img473.imageshack.us/img473/7306/dsc000119ga.jpg

then on the car :D
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1711/dsc000174kd.jpg

i dont know about that VHT paint.. but some other high temp paints need to get real hot before they cure properly. So the paint on your rear wheels for instance might not cure properly.. might be worth looking into

pretty good effort there...

well done

did u have any problems with the paint sticking to each other?

04-02-2006, 10:27 PM
wow. You call that "noob" style ? I used to simply spray a fresh one or two layers of dodgy $2 can matt black on my old enkeis every 5,000kms or so (when the brake dust overcomes the colour lol)

still , looks good ! How much is that can of primer ? How much "cover" can u do before runnign out !?

G-Stick
04-02-2006, 10:30 PM
well all came up to about 50 bucks
thats 3 cans of black which we only really needed 2 and 1 primer and 1 clear coat. think primer was like $13 and we had a fare bit left

total time was about 6 or so hrs.
LOL at ' I used to simply spray a fresh one or two layers of dodgy $2 can matt black on my old enkeis every 5,000kms or so '

Vht paints make a gloss black paint specfically for wheels, you could try that. It is a Polyurethane Wheel Paint, that is specifically formulated to resist chipping, cracking and fading while protecting the surface from oxidation.

nice job on ya rims...

sorry for the n00b questions in advance:
1. so matte black = no clear coat? or are there different blacks you can get? (man that sounds dumb).

2. does the clear coat add any protection? so without the clear coat will the paint chip more easily?

3. without spare tyres how did youz jack up your car? any tricks

we did it at my mates house and he had his stockies lying around so i used them. but its ok to leave it on jacks as thats wat i did for the fronts, thats if u have two. or alternative u can do it one by one which does take time.

']the vht is enamel

did u have any problems with the paint sticking to each other?

Yeah I want to know this too, because when I spraying my rims ages ago the K+H clear coat reacted funny with the VHT and made it bubble and peel off, the two are two totally different mediums and correct me if im wrong, should not work together.

Dylanamus
07-04-2006, 10:24 AM
Nothing beats a full professional powder coat with gloss for four rims for under $100 (the whole lot). But you have to slip your wheels in a bulk spray order to get that price...

G-Stick
07-04-2006, 10:26 AM
hey guys i wouldnt have a clue about all this enamel stuff.
wat i use lasted till now and is fine only peel off abit dues to the guys who took off my tyres but if it wasnt for them my rims would still be perfect. i might do it again wen i have time.

You need to get harder paint. Most automotive paint has different hardeners, I only found this out later when i did mine also.

G-Stick
21-11-2006, 09:37 AM
wat u mean harder paint? oh well this was done like nearly a yr now. i am in the process of doing my enkeis the same style. might post some pics wen its done

Limbo
21-11-2006, 12:36 PM
They mix hardeners with paints. Try and get a paint that has more hardener in it then it won't come off easily. ALso make sure you prime the surface

Samm928
15-12-2007, 01:59 PM
i did mine white.. took me 9hrs.. and its chipping off after 2months and make sure if you do white.. you use a whole can of clear coat on each rim.. so when it gets dirty the dirt is easier to come off and stuff.. white is a pain.. i bought $50 worth of cans to spray mine gun metal grey... $10 a can for gun metal. gonna loook mad!! i'll post photo's when im done :) imma do it within 2 days =)

WASABI HERES A NOTE THAT U MUST FOLLOW, and no my caps lock isnt broken.. the paint has to dry off completely LIKE leave 24 hours if u have it before you clear coat. I used the clear coat on top like after 3 hours of drying and like the clear coat made the paint run off, and bubble and the clear grabbed onto itself kinda. Here's what happened.

noob question.

if i wanted it to be matt black.
without the clear coat would it be more likely to peal, chip what not.?

My wheels were painted matt black. No clear coat and no chipping yet. Just make sure you prep the wheels right.

Fine sand it with wet/dry sand paper. Primer say a good 2-3 coats then the black. Let it set overnight and you'll be sweet.

Wasabi, you'll need around 4 coats. I let my wheels set about 10-15mins after each coat before applying the next.

Sitta It doesn't peel if its prepped right. I had my other set painted black and did 2 mountain runs, alot of carwashs and gravel carparking with no chipping. This was done for around 1 year or so.

will I need primer?

Gio
06-04-2009, 02:10 PM
Yes!!!

Read the thread. Since you are painting you need to prime the surface but more importantly it seems worth while to sand before priming!!

G-Stick
06-04-2009, 02:37 PM
yea i suggest u sand down the surface with 600 grit first, then primer it then sand it again with 1200, primer again then sand with 1200 then start the painting.

.k.
11-09-2009, 12:19 AM
the finished result relies a lot on the prep side so i say no.. w/o sandpaper wont be great

G-Stick
11-09-2009, 08:47 AM
yea.. like .k. said, prepping is the important for a good finish. i used 400-800 grit wen i spray my other set of wheels

.k.
11-09-2009, 10:08 AM
also i think during prep etc, sanding the wheels down helps to scuff the surface up a bit so paint is able to "stick" better?
