I was just wondering how much PSI of air should i pump my tyres up to?

I own a `96 Civic Vti :honda: ,
with low profile tyres.. (205/40/R17)

And whether too much or too less will cause my car to consume petrol more??

Cheers fellas!!!

oh btw way heres a foto of my car..

have you tried "reading" the suggested tire pressure recommended on the tire side wall?

Why dont you ask the place that you bought the mags and tyres from?

Pretty sure that they would be able to give you a pressure setting.

Then just stiffen or soften to compensate to the type of driving that you are doing.

Since when do Tyre side walls show recommended pressure? Far as i know, they only show Max Pressure.

Yup thats about right

So if you are doing a lot of fast hills driving and stuff you probably could go to something like 36-38 rears and 38-40 front to allow that little less flex in the drive tyres.

Just when filling up dont trust one of them old school tyre gauges.

Pumped my tyres up once on one of them and it said i had 36psi all round

Car felt like shyte

Went to the BP on one of them auto gauges and i had a mix from 25-28psi in different wheels.

I put 40psi in mine, even though it says 36psi max.

My dad did an advanced driving course for his job and they told him that you can gain performance, handling, more fuel economy just by putting your tyres to 40psi instead of the traditional 30-32psi that most people put in.

I've had mine for years now at 40psi and I recommend it to everyone.

It all depends on the tyre. You can't just simply inflate the standard size tyres up to 40psi - you'll end up weraing out the middle of the tyre due to too much inflation.

On the lower profile tyres, like xcwizit's, mrwillz's and mine (205/40 17) you really need to put them up to about 39-40 front and 36-38 rear as mrwillz said. I ran mine for years at 36 front and 34 rear and found them to be really slippery in the wet. I noticed a huge difference when I put them up to 39 front and 37 rear. The car handles better in the dry and much better in the wet than it did on the lower pressures.

If you run standard sized tyres, follow the tyre placard on your drivers door, or if you have non-standard (bigger wheels) tyres then ask at the place you got them from.

The idea is that you want maximum tyre contact with the road. Too much pressure (overinflation) will cause the middle of the tyres to wear more quickly and potentially cause you to skate around due to limited grip, too little pressure (under-inflation) will cause the outer edges of the tyres to wear, and potentially cause you to aquaplane in the wet.

The right pressures in your tyres is not just an economical thing, it is ultimately a safety thing. They are the only point of contact between the car and the road, which is why good tyres are crucial for safety and handling.

well I put 43psi in my low profile 15's and have had no probs.
The car performs so much better at 43 compared to say ~37.

The front tyres wear on the inside but thats because the car is lowered. (any way to fix this?)
