When i shift into 5th gear, it is very stiff, and it sort of crunches.
Is this a sign of a worn syncro, or is it something else?

syncro yes.. a very common problem with F and H gearboxes. ive done 5th gear syncro in 3 different boxes and my friends also have done thiers, one beyond repair.
try servicing the gearbox with very good quality aftermarket oil like 'redline' it should dissapear after that, if not then you will need to replace the sync gear

How much does it cost to repair the 5th gear synchro that is the problem?
Would driving with the synchro problem cause damage to other parts of the transmission or other mechanical parts?
Can you describe the crunch sound that indicates a worn sychro?
The type of sound, where it comes from, and how to replicate it?

Fairly sure I have the same problem. I have to let the rpm drop basically to idle level before I change into 5th without it crunching. It went away with a gearbox oil change to oem oil. Came back after a week or so.

yep.. you can drive with the sync gone just do this, or you can rev match or double clutch. which ever you're more comfortable with. it doesnt do much harm as the gears are built strong, the syncros are the weak link.
