My speedo started to stuff up the other day and i believe this is atributed to the vss being or about to **** up. Anyways today my speedo died completly and wont work at all.... And as that happened the check engine light came on.. Would i be correct in this not being a mojor problem and the light being on is just to state that my VSS has failed, as this is what i believe i have worked out from my research.. ?
Just want to be safe

I would fix it. Not mandatory as I believe your car gets rpm info off the CPS or from a cam sensor in the distributor.

mate, check your ECU for error codes if you havent already..
(check the DIY guide in the article forums)

that will tell you if they are both linked.

EDIT:

/\ check there if you havent..
make sure car is off.. put a paper clip in both holes of the green plug under the glove box to the left (think it may be taped to some other wire kinda)..

pull out carpet to see the ECU

and put key onto ON.. and check the light on the ECU (not on the dash like other models)

no need for the paperclip method as it's an OBD-0, just turn on the ignition and check ECU light.

the engine check light comes on on all cars that way!.
i tried the clip method and nothing happened

i think you look at the actual ECU itself ot view error codes - there is a small LED int he centre of the ECU. pull back ur carpet and have alook.

Isn't VTEC speed dependant (Ie via the VSS?)

Does your odomoeter tick over? It could be a cluster problem also, but check your ECU codes as a starting point.

VTEC is oil pressure dependant, not via the VSS

Yeh that's what i meant, turn ignition on then check ecu light(small red L.E.D) that is located in centre of ecu.. then count the flashes and see which fault the code corresponds to.

"VTEC is oil pressure dependant, not via the VSS"

That would mean you could engage VTEC at the traffic lights. I doubt it.
VTEC is also speed dependant.

You dont have to have the car moving to engage VTEC. So it cant be VSS dependant. Would be RPM related instead if anything.

have you sat and reved your car on the spot??? because mine never engages when that happens the car must be moving

I reckon I got the same problem. I don't know if it's the same on all vtec models but on mine when the engine light is on (speed sensor code) vtec doesn't engage

i dont get how you can have an engine light appear.. yet the ecu reports no code?

also crxtasy, are you saying u dont need to use the paper clip method.. and the ecu always will show the code without the bridging of the paperclip?

if so what is the point of that plug?

+ j3z3z ofcourse let us know of the outcome

Dxs... yes that is right, no paperclip needed. I don't know what that plug is for ...some other diagnostics perhaps? It differs from the plug described in the DIY ECU check as it is not in a connecter holder.. there's just one plug hanging there by itself.

crxtasy.. weird..

if i recall correctly though there is a holder for it.. but mine was already dangling like yours

Took it to the honda dealer today to see the mech. It appears that i do not have the cable to the VSS (no wonder why i couldnt find cable) but i am running an electronic unit off the 96+ CRX and 96+ B16a equiped CIVICS. Just wondering if that is a standard unit across the range now?

Thats rubbish!
-1RP for you!

Vtec is dependant on VSS, ECT and various other sensors!

any update on this case??

so does this mean s that if speedo doesnt work.. = vtec fell off?

If the ECU doesn't have a vehicle speed input (ie it reads 0) then no VTEC won't work!

At 30kph VTEC falls back on.
My VTEC,however,works without VSS input:p

Have you check your speed sensor yet on your gearbox ?? Cos this is very important.
