hey, i have an 89 civic and i was lookin round in the engine bay today and found the intake has 2 pipes, a main one and a smaller one that hooks to the cover for the headers. would it be ok to take the pipe off the cover and put it somewhere else to suck in cold air. i though it was to suck out the hot air from the headers but when i replace them i cant put the cover back on so i thought it would be ok to take it off. will it do any damage with it out? thanks

The pipe from the headers is most likely to be to aid in warming the engine when cold, and in some cars a butterfly closes when the engine reaches operating temp.

ok thanks alot for that, will it take alot longer for the engine to become warm and if i leave it off will anything change or get bad?

By the sound of it your engine is the carby model, removing it won't do any damage but will take longer to warm up especially in cold weather. For an engine to pass emissions testing it needs to reach operating temp within a given time frame. But yes you can do it, perhaps use webers or something like it, I'm not much of a carby guru.

using webers mean

using aftermarket carbies.
Webers is a good brand for aftermarket carbies

hey. sorry for replying to an old thread but, i replaced my clutch and i took out the air box and took the pipes off that go to it, i put it all back together and that butterfly thing that was said to open and close stayes up, so it only takes the hot air in and the intake has no use. it stayes up when the car is cold, wich i think its ment to but it stayes shut when the car is hot too. any ideas why it wont close?

dirt and grime holding it open!?!?
use some carby cleaner!
u can get it from repco/supercheap

start ur car and spray it down the throttle body where the butterfly is and around it.. hopefully that should loosen the butterfly

thanks, might need a bit of a clean, thats what i orriginaly thought, but the hose that goes to the sensor thing on top of the intake is always sukin air which makes the butterfly go up, so i took that hose off so it stays down. im not sure what it is but the intake doesnt suck air that strong either, but it use to.
