Blown gearbox yeah, because the gearbox is directly driven by the wheels. But if it is the engine that fails, there is the clutch between the gearbox and the engine. I think there is, because I've seen them push the car forwards and backwards into the garage while the engine is still running (on TV of course :p).

alonso is smart..he doesnt wait till the straight line, he hits the gas at a corner an just flys off.
while the guys behind him..swerving left and right..he has a chance of just putting the medal to the ground an leave them behind.
and that was a boring race, i got bored of it..after the crashes.

all F1 cars have a manual hand operated clutch this year due to the non existance of launch control
i would've thought jenson would've kept the car nice and straight. held up the clutch and rolled in for a 6th place finish
cause jenson's 2nd in WDC and 6th is still a fair few points
but if i was in the car when the car blew my gf would be fken cut about cleaning my underpants and my race suit
its just sad how u get so happy for honda pole position and then on the straight honda's in 5th and also i tipped fisichella for 6th in the tipping comp. its a triple blow for me. AND IT WAS MY DOUBLE ROUND

to sit thru pole position with no P2. then 1st SC and alonso goes 4seconds ahead right after SC pits
and then drop. drop. drop. drop. bam. brakes and stops 3m in front of finish

I wonder if it is Jensen's fault. Even Barrichello was complaining over the radio that the brakes were terrible and that he was sufferring "like a pig." Maybe Jensen is having the same problem but is trying to work around it with his skill rather than complain. I hope Honda checks out Barrichello's complaints. It would make a better car!

i think because of jenson's fight with fisichella for like the last 10 laps or so he was driving his civic pretty hard
and maybe after final corner he sees the line sees the chequered flag. puts his foot down and floors it and then engine blows or something
cause u could see that he finished the corner then smoke and flames came
and also i found it funny how montoya is such a wanker. "wasnt my fault. all of a sudden i got no power" fken columbian drug mule

From what I heard in the process, they put the carbon into a mould and then bake it at high temperature with pure methane gas. The carbon from the methane gas fuses with the solid carbon to increase the density. After 3/5 weeks they take it out to machine. After machining, they put it back with methane gas for another 3 weeks. Imagine to cost of heating up the discs for a whole 6/8 weeks!!! The reason they machine it halfway is because the discs are too hard to be machined after 6/8 weeks.

Australia: Three point gamble for San Marino win
http://www.sportnetwork.net/mainadmin/img/1691143978041.jpg
By Phil Huff - April 2 2006
Honda Racing F1 elected to retire Jenson Button from the Australian Grand Prix just yards from the finish line, choosing instead to sacrifice a potential three points for a fresh engine without penalty at San Marino.
Jenson Button's car started spewing flames, smoke and engine parts as he exited the final corner of the race and, with just seconds to come to a decision, his race engineer Andrew Shovlin declared that Button should not cross the finish line.
In issuing the order, the team chose to lose the three points Button may have got for finishing sixth, although Jenson doesn't feel he'd have made it to the line anyway.
"Two corners from the end I felt it was a little bit down on power, a little bit tight, and then coming out of the last corner there was a massive, massive fire and lots of smoke," explained Jenson. "I pulled over to the right to get out of everyone's way but it seized just before I got to the finish line. I stopped the car anyway as it wouldn't have made the finish line anyway."
Team boss Nick Fry spoke immediately after the race, saying It was a quick call by the race engineer, and we need to see if it was right later."
Speaking later, Fry added "Clearly what we will do, as we will do with everything, is have an evaluation of the situation. At the moment we feel it was the right decision.
"We lost points here but we can go to Imola with a clean sheet of paper, a new engine and improvements to the car. Hopefully we can turn it into a good race position next time around.
"We didn't hear anything on the radio or data about it, but Jenson said he felt the engine not pick up properly on the last lap through the fast corners at the back. He felt that something was not quite right, but when he saw the smoke he kept his foot in."
"He's less than impressed, but rightly so I think," he continued. "We've got a lot of work to do before we get to Imola."
While many commentators are suggesting that the team made a poor decision in potentially sacrificing these points, it's worth remembering that Honda Racing F1's target for 2006 is race wins, and not points. Historically, both Jenson Button and Honda have been strong at San Marino, home to the next race, and a fresh engine package without penalty will be a great benefit, especially considering that both championship leader Fernando Alonso will be on his second engine cycle.

There was clearly something wrong with Button today from what I can see...
Even if his tyres were warmed up at the rare occasions, he wasn't running at a good pace. Only 7th best lap time.
Also, he wasn't even trying hard enough to warm up the tyres. Even Alonso could see this (as he said in the interview), and hence overtook Jenson after 1st Safety Car period as he was more aggressive with warming up the tyres.
These are the things which make a world champion - I expected more from Button!
What about Mark Webber? That was a bit unfair to him.
Anyway Williams are known to have problems during winter testing, for using their new, quicker but unreliable seamless gearbox.

What a fantastic race, i loved it (well, apart from being gutted when Fisi stalled on the grid!). But yeah, last to 5th isn't bad, and he was flying before the first pit stop, passed like 8 cars, one lap after another, not that we saw any of it. WTF is with channel 10!!!!
Great save as well on the last corner, all crossed up on button's oil with zero visibility, coz the oil on his visor. Someone said Button would have to change his underwear, what about fisi, he's all of a sudden 2 metres from a fireball!
Hopefully this race goes someway to correcting all the kimi fans and their "he is faster than alonso, just bad luck" crap. This was a straight race, and Kimi got beaten, he is not better than Alonos!, after every safety car alonso kept pulling away (even after MF1 gave them a head start) (oh, and btw, i think someone said MF1 was Minardi, they aren't, they are ex-Jordan, Toro Rosso are minardi).
I'm glad that BMW also pulled some points, we now have 3 or 4 teams for the wins, and 3 or 4 teams to fight for points....its going to be a great season.
But yeah, channel 10, 1. Do they not remember the backlash after they used their own commentators a few years ago?!, give us Brundle and Allen!!!!!! And also, the coverage missed the first restart!!! and no replays!!!! WTF!

I think Sato is a very fast driver too, but he was ALWAYS overshadowed and out performed by Button.
I mean, Barrichello is suffering from exactly the same thing now... he was never faster than Button during Winter Testing (except for 1 day from memory) and a lot slower than Button's race pace.
But yes Sato is a fag...

After reading this thread, no one has mentioned how bad Button is on the restart after a safety car.
It is basic karting rules, bunch the grid up and when you make the decision to go you out run them (so they don't get in your slip stream)
Jenson had 3 chances to get it right, each safety car he stuffed it, everyone goes on about how much better he is then Webber, I can't see the arguement leaning towards either driver.
Honda aren't the standout team this year, I think BMW are, the cars are so fast and both drivers stay out of trouble and just have a good race and collect points.
Massa, Rosberg, Klein, Michael and Montoya all had shocking afternoons, but thats motorsport.
Montoya spining on the formation lap was hilarious, seeing Ross Brawn laugh was gold.
McLaren are still the only team in the padock that haven't had an engine failure this year, Montoya's "offtrack" incident caused a default switch to cut off or something in his car which cuts the engine power apparently.
Kimi drove nearly 20 laps with a stuffed front nose didn't he?
I heard that it wasn't in good shape and thats why he was loosing so much time to Alonso in the first half of the race. Towards the end he was catching Alonso very quickly.
Poor Webber, in such a strong position to finish with good points and then a box full of neutrals (which happened were i was sitting)
Overall, great weekend except Melbourne has the worst weather in the world. I'll be bad next year (praying for it to be warmer)

Well I did say that Button 'wasn't' trying hard enough to warm up his tires again when he was behind safety car.... even Alonso could see that easily and hence got past him... haha
I think Button is very fast - but he doesn't have the 'intelligence' to become a world champion, despite the natural ability to drive
as for Kimi catching Alonso - well Alonso was only revving to below 18000rpm saving the engine at the end. It doesn't mean Kimi was as fast as Alonso, especially seeing that Kimi's best lap was near the end, with very low fuel.
Whereas Alonso's fastest lap, which only only 0.2s down on Kimi, was with a much higher fuel load..

true.. easier said than done though... the Honda is SHOCKING after restarts... first few laps he was 5-8secs off the pace! thats fkn ridiculous
i really hope they get this sorted out before the Euro leg kicks off.. its really hampering their efforts...
u could see this in Bahrain n Sepang as well... initial lap after pit stop was horrible..

When I was watching the race(s), I kept thinking what the heck is Button doing. Or NOT doing....
He doesn't even try to warm up the tyres. Too scared to pull a Montoya spin? haha :D
Buttons pole lap..
