Hi guys,

Im like 2 days away from ordering my Tein SS coilovers, so Im just doing last few checkups before the big buy. Btw, my car is a 96 EK1 Sedan.

So here are the questions:

1. Has anyone ever had any mechanical or body strucutre problems with their car that were attributed to having coilovers? Since I dont want to spend 1.5k for them now, and then realise because of having them, iv gota pay through the roof to fix up all the problems due to having them and as a result screw up my car and budget

2. If you answered yes to question 1, did you buy coilovers with upper pillar mounts or without? Since from what I know they are worth buying if u race ur car...where as i dont...correct me if im wrong

3. How bad is the camber when you do a 1.5" - 2" drop? And is it worth getting a camber kit? Since I have no idea how much my tire life will be reduced due 2 this

i have got fulcrum coilovers in my ek and had them in for nearly 1.5 yrs nevr had any problems with them well worth the money spent. camber i dont really have any and my car is almost as low as it goes never had problems with ware on my tyres due to camber. :)

As far as I understand, there is no need for upper mounts on front wheel drive Honda's.

Your camber shouldnt be a problem with that sort of drop. The real issue is with your toe (as this tends to wear tyres more than camber). Toe however can be adjusted.

My personal preference is to not go with a camber kit - I have seen major issues with using these. However, as I said before, you shouldnt need to worry about camber issues with that sort of drop.

i just got tein SS on my car day 2 now, nothing bad so far just wen ur on thehardest setting u can fell every bump on the road, and there is a lil squeak that happens wen u go over bumps. body roll? wat body roll :) even normal turns seems easier for some reason. overall i LIKE it and the height is sexy no finger gap on 17s. but the camber in the front looks scray with the drop.

hope this helps, cheers

yeah i put my coilovers in, didnt get a camber kit, didnt get an alignment, 5 months later tyres are really on the way out.

I think it has to do with my toe, not necassirly ,camber. Make sure you get an alignment.

Cheers

Yep. Toe is your problem - not so much the camber.

The biggest problem after getting coilovers is you want to drive home via the twisty road all the time.

I agree with this, i too have had problems with camber kits and believe you would save alot less hassels if you get a proper wheel alignment and kept a reasonable drop where you suffer far less camber issue.

has anyone ever had this happen? if so:

1. how soon did this happen after the coilovers were first installed?
2. how did you deal with this?
3. how much did this cost?

Terry

dont worry about it man, it really is no big deal, you may just hear squeeks or rattling occasionally
not hard to fix.

a few months
2. how did you deal with this?
turn the stereo up
3. how much did this cost?
it was free

i wouldnt worry too much. you only really notice the rattles when you have the radio off
my biggest rattle problem is from the rear parcel shelf but thats because ive got some broken clips that i need to fix.

PS: I have a US made Coupe these are knowen to rattle more/have more issues than the japanese made models.

coilovers have never been shown to cause MAJOR issues... i think you're just stressing abit too much.

over time, it's not just mods that cause car rattles and problems, it's general wear and tear and daily driving.

seems like you're already set on getting the coilovers... so get them, install them and see what happens. not everyone has the same issues, every car is different and how u drive them is important too. the tein ss is supposed to be a very street friendly daily driving coilover, so put them on a softer setting and all should be fine.

do get a wheel balance/alignment etc once you've installed them to avoid any problems in future.

Dude DONT WORRY

i have the exact same coilovers in my EG civic...and it rattles like a tommy gun. BUT this is due to the cars age and stiff coilovers just bouncing its guts all over the shop.
Still , handles brilliantly :D I tell the ladies " its so loud coz its a race car" ehehe

hey ben i just got tein few days ago, which way do u turn for the softer setting its (left) right? its so bumpy where i live damn ghetto, but the turning is crazy.

counter-clockwise = reduce damper
clockwise = increase damper :)

IMO i run "about" 50% front and "about" 65% rear -

Thanx 4 all the info,

Im not gettin worked up bout it...jus wanna make sure that they won't cause any problems in future. Regardless im going to use it for street driving and my car is in great cond...so id imagine i shuldnt have any rattling, esp if i set the damper to the softer settings for drive comfort.

I'm going to order them some time this week when i get the time.

As far as install....IS Motor Racing in Rockdale which I've heard great things about quoted me $250 for the install...which im my mind is rather deer in comparison to the $100 that JDMYard offered (im buying the coilovers from them also) or the $85 offered by bennjamin.

So is it really worth it getting them installed at a propper mechanic and paying extra? (I'm not doubting / accusing the skill and reliability of JDMYard or bennjamin...just want to know how most people got their coilovers installed)

Also, i've been hearing that you need to drive them in...how do u do that?

Coil overs are a simple install. Probably the easiest thing I’ve installed. I did my install myself but I have a hoist which makes things a bit easier. $250 seems extremely steep.

I think i might get the install from JDMYard.....since Padstow is closer 2 me than Ryde...sorry ben :P

I was thinking of initially doing a 1.5" drop...n see how that feels...n if its all good then prolly go down further to 2" (if i can still clear my driveway that is :P)

Now with wearing the coilovers in...how do i go about that...or is it just a load of bs?

from what iv been told wearing the coilovers in or bedding them in is easy. its done on a pretty soft setting and about 200km or a week of driving depending on conditions. everyones told me it needs to be done so im assuming it does. i dont know how important it is though. a mate ran his in on the drive to wakefield so who knows get a experts advice. il let u know on fri cause bells installing mine then.

dont worry about it -Scratch each others backs

Anyway , initially i would stick to a subtle drop and leave it on 0 damper to wear it in ~ off the top of my head that would be all it needs after a few hundred k's. Then go lower but dont SIT on the lowest perch for too long lol.

BTW is this Shants gf ?

haha....mate...im a 19 year old guy...and i got no idea who Shant is.

Regardless, i think ill prolly do a 1.5" drop on 0 damper...and after a while change damper to a softer setting and if i see fit...lower to 2"

when i put my coilys in, i put on the low height i wanted.... then a week later i was draggin my arse and taking chunks out of my tyre... springs settle in and could drop up to and inch!! so don't get too keen straight up...

so if at the end of the day i wanna achieve a 2" drop...u rkn if i do a 1" drop to begin with...and then let the springs wear in, they will lower further to upto 2"?? Is this the same with all coilovers?? And which ones are you using

Yep, the concept is the same with all coilovers. The weight of the car, makes the springs compress more than where they started at. That being said, I dont think it moves as much as an inch - more like half an inch from my experience. One way to start to see the drop, is after the install sit on the boot with a mate and it will compress the springs a bit faster than with just normal driving.

Got my SS coilovers on order from japan (for my EF8). Probably still a few weeks away though. Can't wait coz my shocks are buggered. haha I'll probably cruise over to modproject as well put it on around 4/16 or so damper and lower it a single inch.

Ru$kI
31-03-2006, 08:45 AM
haha, no prob mate. I'll prolly do wat Dylanamus is gonna do and lower an inch to begin with...and then let them wear in....so it may still look a lil 'high' initially with a 1" drop...but im guessin in a few weeks it'll settle in.

Yesterday i measured the room between my guards and my tires....i have about 3 fingers (rounding up) in between at the rear and a lil more at the front, hence i can dump it by like 5cm or so...which is basically the 2" which i was initially considering.

But just to be on the safe side ill dump it 1" first, then let it settle in which wud further lower to 1.5", i'll leave it at that...see how i manage with my GAY driveway (as at the 'worst' point in the driveway, my muffler is bout 5-6cm off the ground, and my OEM lip is 1.5cm off the ground!!!!) Mind you once i put on coilovers...the lip is gonna get taken off otherwise i will look like a massive Tool stuck in my own driveway

tein SS's will not let you dump it 4 inces - prob 2.5inches max.
Get the next level up with adjustable shock perch too , to add that extra level of "drop".
