dude, the difference is 1cm, literally. 175 are fine for 14 inch, 185 wont make much difference. they dont really make that many good tyres for 14 inch, not like the difference in cooling and stability will be that noticeable as 14 inch wheels arent wide enough to take advantage of wider treads.

just stick with whatever you can get your hands on that is grippy, yokohama should be good.

What car do you have? Too narrow, you lose too much grip when you corner because the tyre tends to roll on the shoulder.

Your stock tyre size is 175/65 R14. Call around the other shops. I paid $155 for 195/60 R15 C.Drive, and that is an expensive size.

14"? You can get RE001 for $100. Pretty good.

didnt know Re001 comes in 14"...

From b/stone, GIII in 185/60R14 would be around the $120 mark, and Firestone wide oval the $110 mark.

im after new 17" coz my front are stuffed. gotta keep an eye on it properly this time. my car is lowered by about 1.5". the inner shoulder is pretty much bald but the rest of the tyres are almost brand new. anything else i can do other than alingment to stop them from wearing so quckly? had em for about 20,000km. (proxes 4)

im leaning towards the advans re001. street use only. from what i have read, i should be paying about $250 per tyre?

if the inner shoulder is bald, at only 1.5inch lowering, try reducing the tyre pressure.

pretty sure its not that coz they are running at about 35psi. they even ran at like 32 psi for ages to see if it would reduce but nothing.

do you mean 215/40/17 and 205/40/17?

really depends on the brands, alot of cheap chinese shit has found its way to our shores,
decent tyres normally differ between $20-50/tyre on similar brands in those sizes.

they are pretty good i got them on atm on 205/50R15, but i prefer my old Michelin PP2's .. between the 2, the PP2s had noticeably better steering response (mayb stiffer sidewalls?) and the PP2s were very predictable. I tried this after i got my Re001 on the same street with the same lil island things goin left then right, and the Re001s i havta give it a lil bit more time bfore itll turn bak right, i remember when i got my PP2s the steering was much stiffer (compared to my stock tyres n rims) etc and wid my Re001s now it feels like im on stock size tyres like 195... other then that, it sticks on the road nicely even in the wet it aint bad (probs better in the wet then my PP2s were).

The Re001s very good bang for buck, i got mine for 180per corner which is very expensive alredy (cbf finding) My previous PP2s were 220 per corner.

No way RE001 is better than RE070. RE070 is a street tyre with a semi compound. RE070 is a step above RE01R, which is in turn 1 or 2 steps above RE001, depending on how you view the RE050A.

Bridgestone Potenza RE001 in 195/50/R15. Best bang for your money at around $120 each.

I've tested the RE001 at Oran Park and Eastern Creek Raceway. Both wet and dry track. This is my review of them:

Dry braking: 9/10 Very confident. Excellent.

Wet braking: 6/10 Late braking not recommended.

Dry cornering: 8/10 Very good for street tyre. Progressive breakaway.

Wet cornering: 7/10 Good grip. But breakaway is sudden and the tyre will slide 1 metre or more before regaining grip.

Feedback: 6/10 Average communication. Difficult to read when the limit is approaching in the wet or dry. In the dry, its OK because the tyre is progressive. But in the wet, difficult to drive fast.

Summary: A tyre with good grip and value for money. But 'not' so fun to drive on, due to lack of feedback to the driver.

aaronng
26-06-2008, 01:06 PM
Depends on the car's suspension setup too. In the wet, I can make the car reach the limit of lateral grip, have it break away and slide, and then let it regain or slide more by using throttle control. Very nice compared to the previous Dunlop 2050m which wouldn't regain grip at all and wasn't progressive.

how much more do RE070 costs compared to the RE001 roughly? Reckon its worth the extra over RE001 for street use only?

i can get RE001 at $219 per corner fitted and balanced for 215/40/17. From reading around, that is damn cheap and i think i might go for it. plus balance lol.

I've just used the bridgestone Adrenaline RE001 on the track and am quite impressed by it. Albeit running high pressure approximately 40psi hot a tyre, after several laps and alot of abuse, the tyres held up really well.

Ultimately, even clocked a string of 1:11s at Wakefield with a best of 1:11.6
Might have even got into the 10s had I been driving smoother.

My brother is after a set of tyres (preferably Yokohamas).

Specs are: 215-40-R17 (What is the RRP of Yokohama tyres for these specs (per corner)? And how much can you shave off the RRP ;) )

I thought they would have the same pricing across all stores! :(

Haven't been keeping too up to date with this thread, but thought I would share track experience on the RE001. Make sure you have plenty of camber on these as the loaded shoulder does not like the heat and will have chunks ripped out. Fairly common for hi performance road tyres to suffer from. My experience with Yoko C.Drive leads me to believe that they are designed for camber settings that maybe less than ideal. Yokohama does advertise they design to reduce heat build up in the shoulders, I assume they carry this through to the others in the Drive series.

But I want to see what the other companies are going to do about the RE001, as by the looks of things they currently have the market wrapped up. I am very pleased with them.

EG30
22-08-2008, 09:20 PM
cant agree with you more there Superdave...

Done 3 track ( AHG test track at the Perth airport )tuning days now on my set of RE001's, and after the 1st outing the shoulder got pretty chopped up and after the 2nd outing the outer edge of the sidegrooves vanished altogether. I find that once the shoulders had been rounded off they tend to stop getting worse.

http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/9099/img4969lc4.th.jpg (http://img385.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img4969lc4.jpg)

I've been running 40psi cold pressure mainly on track days, over 42psi the way the slip angles build up wasnt to my liking so I find 40psi the best compro for me. My eg runs 2 deg neg camber on cheapie Kings Low which is bit soft on good street tyres.

Still hugely impressed with them even b4 the cheap price is taken into consideration, as they are designed for all round driveablilty is achieved partly by a softish outer sidewall to optimise grip balance between the loaded and unloaded tyres.

As for the their performance at the track, it was only in the 2 tight corners ( 20m radius corner ) where the outer shoulder folded over and the grip snapped off where I wish they had stiffer shoulders, the rest of lap was fine where most corners were around the 40m-60m radius range.

In terms of numbers, they pulled a max lateral g of 1.20g, and sustainably in the 1-1.05g range.

Cant wait to get my hands on a set of RE11 which has a more agressive tread pattern still and presumably stiffer shoulder.

What size are you running and mounted on what width rim?

I'm upgrading from T1R's (195/55/15) to RE-01R (195/50/15) in the next week. I was quite impressed by the Toyo's. They are over 18 months old now, harden from overheating, have chunks missing all over the place and have worn outer shoulders much like the picture above. Looking past all that though, they are a nice soft compound with a very street friendly and predictable sidewall. For the price they are a great street tyre.

With king springs and only -2 degrees static camber, you'd be well into positive camber through the turns. I'm worried about rolling over with -3.5 degrees front camber and 7kg front springs!

I'm off to Wakefield in a week so I'll report back with my review on the Bridgestones!

running 15x6 fat fives string, so pretty baggy profile and with this setup on the hard turns I prob have 2 deg postitve camber on the outside wheel LOL....

but it's not that bad and quite do-able by changing my driving style to suit, ie not point trying to wind on more lock and more throttle when the outside front tyre squealing for mercy.

I've got a set of Toyo R888 coming from Taleb next week and Rota 15x7 coming from the states for more serious timed events.

RE001 are good for lateral grip (i.e. hard cornering), but are not as good as other tyres for straight line grip (i.e. hard acceleration in 1st gear in the wet).

I'm off to Wakefield in a week so I'll report back with my review on the Bridgestones!

went to the barbagallo raceway's ( hosts v8 supercar round) tuning day today, did 52 laps total, about 45 hard laps in my 1024kg car weight EG with B16A w/ 107kw atw and dc2 262mm brakes config. They pulled 1.10g on 85km/h turns consitently and max 1.15-1.20g at those turns.

my front tyres were pretty hacked up from prev small track outings, so I rotated them front to rear and the front ones were still 70-80% depth.

the left front at this track cops a hammering being mostly RH turns.

will be interesting to see what you think after your outing at WP string...

Thanks for the heads up on that. Got my Tyres fitted. Soooo much more grip now. I forgot how good it could be.

I took it in for a service day before yesterday, they told me I had 70% / 80% treat left. I dunno if they genuinely thought that or they were just messing with me, either way it doesn't bode well for the mechanic.

Got a bit of an emergency I guess - hopefully going in tomorrow to get new wheels and tyres fitted on my dc5 but when I chose 18" wheels over 17" I didn't realise the Yokohama A-drive R1's I am going to get jumped from $215 to $310 a tyre. Anyone know of anything decent for cheaper or even better in that price range or is this about as good as I'm gonna get.

R1s are pretty high up in terms of performance

there are of course better tyres u can get....

but yeh....i dont know if u can find something as good for a cheaper price really....u can def find as good and better for a more expensive price, thats easy

but cheaper..highly unlikely, unless u want to go for a no name low quality brand tyre

I have used the Sumitomo HTR200 on my dc2r is the past and were a good tyre all round, not very noisy like other hard compound tyres. Nice tread pattern is always good and werent too pricy, only problem is i cant find anyone anymore who stocks them. Any ideas?? Would like the 205/50/15s. If anyone knows where i can find em that will be great also. But my hunt continues, if you can find them theyre highly recommended after using many tyres

I had for 2 years Goodyear F1 gs-d2 on 185-60-14. Very quiet, excellent grip on wet roads, but not so good on dry. Very soft compound and not so hard framework making it more susceptible to high temperatures and overheating. Excellent braking though.
I had them replaced with some Coopers XTC 185-55-14. The offered a lot better grip on dry, more confidence when cornering due to shorter profile, and better wheel response (though a bit lighter sensation). A lot inferior on wet.

These days i am waiting for my Yokohamas S-drive on 185-55-14. Hope they turn out better! price 350e for 4.

Lucky that I got my tyres from Tirerack.com when the dollar was over 90 US cents! Hate to fuel the already burning economical fire, but the tyres weren't made in Australia anyway, and I'm not a fan of funding reselling business'.

Perhaps 290euro for a set of four? Still might set you back a hefty sum with the value of our currency. Shipping will be brutal.

After owning AD07's for a while and giving them an absolute hiding on a few occasions I can say they wear very well against something like Potenza RE001, the only area they aren't superior is road noise. Recently I examined the tread for wear patterns and found it impossible to prove the tyre has been thrashed.

Known as the fastest road tyre by many US reviews, they are very good in the wet also. In my experience no heat up is needed to get their best, yet they feel just as good when hot.

lol
Against the RE001 Adrenaline.

Technically the AD07 is vs RE01R. The RE01R has been replaced by the RE111R, in comparison after 10 laps of the Ebisu circuit in MX5's the AD07 showed minimal wear, had the most consistent lap times but got overtaken by RE111R lap 8 or 9. After the race the Bridgestone, Dunlop & Toyo all looked blistered, but the AD07 looked relatively normal.

AD08 due out mid year and is even better, it's my next tyre for sure.

just shopping around for next tyre which i had the following in mind re001 adrenalins, toyo proxes t1rs, proxes 4.

price check on those...
adren: 200 give or take 5 per tyre + F&B, S&A $65
t1r: 175 F&B S&A 49
proxes 4: 159 F&B S&A 49

i think im leaning towards t1rs atm i thought they were alright price for 205/55/15s considering another place quoted 348 :S.

how many kms has ppl got out of these and is there a major difference between proxes 4s and t1rs

I haven't used proxes4's but have TPG's. Big difference between t1r's & tpg's. (especially in wet) i've ran two sets of t1r's on front, they lasted between 15k-17k km's. if rotated regularly, & alignment problem fixed, probably would've last longer. But that was on front wheels for life of tyres.

Quite a few questions that seem no one border to ask....well..

In 99.99% of situation, there is no difference between 91 and 89 load rating. It will matter if you have 5 people, boot full and towing a boat.

Whether a rim stick out of the fener depends on the offset. Google and learn.

Ventus R-S2 Z212 does have a higher performance in pretty much all category than Toyo T1R. But, it may wear faster than T1R.

Hey everyone,

My rego is coming up in April and i know i'll fail if I dont replace my tyres. I have 17" rims that take 205/40/17 tyres. I was looking into using directional tyres, good grip dry and wet, for daily use, fairly quiet ride, and not thrashed ie. burn outs etc. (but I do turn hard-ish sometimes...) and only looking to spend $100-$150 a tyre not including alignment.

I've noticed that tyres become obsolete over time so a lot of this thread might be out of date, and lately it's been mainly performance related tyres discussed.

Thanks heaps for future replies!

thanks d15z1SUX, is there a reason why they are better? just wondering thats all.

the rs2 will wear out faster as it is more performance orientated than s1 evo k107. rs2 has a wear rating of 200 and s1 evo k107 280.

but if you want better grip the rs2 is better.

actually what did u want in a street tyre? some people want something that will last longer and have less road noise while others only want all out grip... really depends what you want.

Usually it'll say something like "Wear rating 280 temperature rating A traction rating A"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTQG
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=48

It's a useful rating, but not everything.
The biggest factor in (abnormal) wear is probably toe.

If the tyre manufacturer approves the particular tyre for mounting on a rim of that width go for it. Assuming the tyre is appropriately load and speed rated and you have considered the effect the change in tyre diameter will have. You will sacrifice some tyre rigidity due to the bulged out sidewall and hence you will lose some response.

I figure I should use my Rudd money and replace my bald tyres.

I like the Toyo T1R's, but they are wayy to sporty for my EG. So yeah, aussie version of the T1R's with a hard side wall would be nice.

Wider rims make a huge difference to how the tyre feels. Even jumping up 0.5" can be noticed. If you're after performance you're making a mistake by using a rim on the lower end of the manufacturers allowed width range.

On topic: Anyone got a recomendation for a 195/60/14 daily driver tyre? Not necessarily after something uber cheap, but something that will last me a long time and represent good value for money.

I will repeat it again for those that are a little slow :p. A tyre manufacturer will state the maximum and minimum rim widths for each individual tyre, there are no general rules like "215 is the largest one can fit on a 6.5" :).

I would stick with a good street tyre if I were you because street driving is going to put lots of heat cycles on a set of softer race style tyres which will reduce their grip significantly. Try the new Bridgestone RE11 or the Dunlop Direzza Z1 which is a fair bit cheaper. Both are great tyres which should give decent wear on the street.

Purchased a set of Maxxis Victra i-Pro's in 195/50/15
Treadware: 240 Traction: AA Temperature : A

Previous set were Toyo TGP's (x4), & Toyo T1-R's (F) Michelin Pilot HX MXV3A (R).

beeza : TPG's were alright, but the T1R's were real good. i think the FZ4's are meant to be a better spec tyre than the TPG's, but can't confirm. And the T1-S's have been superseded by the T1R.
The Michelin's were about on par with the TPG's, although they were an older tyre & the compound had become stiffer over time. In the wet, it wasn't that great. But that would be driving above conditions. As the Michelin's were not brand new, opposed to the TPG's, they were probably quite good when brand new.

Gio : $165ea fitted/balanced x4

01-05-2009, 01:07 AM
Yes. i think the more correct term is "dry rot". And it affects all tyres. Which i think is more like really aged & weathered tyres. Which the Michelins were. (aged & weathered at time)

So far initially the Victra i-Pro's seem quieter, or have less roar. And feel like they have a higher threshold, than the T1-R. But i should wait till they wear in a little more.

Hi Moya,

215 is the width of the tire, 45 is the percentage of the width which makes up the side wall.

So find 45% of 215 to get the wall of the tire, both tires as you can see from the % of the width will be very similar.

Hope that helps.
