This thread should come in usefull for people in the future.

Please only post if you are recommending a tyre and post details of the tyre you are reviewing. Also stick to the format and give a rough indication of price.

Here goes:

Yokohama A539 - At around $200 each (205x45 16" fitted) they are an excellant handler in the dry as well as the wet. Well suited for track use as well as day to day driving. At the same time, they will easily give you 30k km's day to day driving with the occasional track visit while being extremely quiet.

Silverstone - These are about $110-120 each (same size as above) and are for people on a tight budget with no performance in mind. They are quite noisey and are not for perfomance applications. A harder compound more suited for daily commuting and for extended tyre life.

I've tried silverstones on my old mags and would not recommend them at all. They lack in any real grip and wear badly. In the wet - well, you might as well be on rollerskates for all the stopping power they have.

Just my $0.02 :)

Just my $0.02 :)

Thats exactly why I am looking for new tyres even though my current tyres (Silverstones) have 95% grip on them.

Ok lets get back on topic.........I'm sure you have a few tyre review to give us Santana ;)

Dunlop FM901's. Mine are 205/40/17 Cost anywhere from $215 - $250.

Great handling in dry and wet. Seem to get better when they wear. Very predictable.

Yokohama AO32R - semi slick tyre. Great for track use. New about $250 - 300 per tyre for 15's. You have to be lucky to get them cheap and second hand ;)

Exceptional handling in wet and dry. Very grippy!

P.S My sister's boyfriend use to use these on his 10 second rx7 :)

Currently using Pirelli P6000's . Much better grip and noise levels when compard to my old DUnlop Monzas. 175/14 i think. $100-120.
If ur around Kograh, i recomend Kograh Tyre power, great service and great prices on any Pireilli's

I'm currently rollin on (F)Continental Sports Contacts and (R)Silverstones.

Continental Sports Contact - For around $230 - 205/40R17 (tyre only). CSCs have a Asymetrical tread design unlike da Water tread design found on most Tyres today. Not a popular choice though due to price/different market I guess? I thought it was wortha try to c how it goes on my Civic. At da moment da Conti's are heaps better than da Silverstones.
I'm yet to find out how well my car will go wit Continentals all round until I get my new shocks though?

I will keep u posted on how da Conti's all round will go.....

I have used a few different tyres but can't remember the exact details for some of them.

Yokohama's - great tyre with heaps of grip. A bit pricey as opposed to Falken etc but a great piece of rubber. Another mental note is that they really make a lot of noise, these things scream when you light them up.

Pirelli - another good tyre but i didn't find them as good as the Yoko's. Plenty of grip and much quieter on the freeway but sometimes not worth the price.

Goodyear Eagle F1's - i had these on my stockies after i burnt out the Yoko's and they were ok. They are a hard compound tyre which means they don't burn up as easy, they are much harder to smoke. Also, from what i've heard hard compound tyres can fall apart, as in chunks can come out of the tyre and once that starts it's not good. But i've punished them on some twisties and they held up.

Falken FK451's - Got these on my rims at the moment and there is heaps of grip. They are a good tyre for both dry and wet although i've aquaplaned twice this winter and almost lost control at 110km/h both times.

I currently have

Monza - Couriers's for about $130 - $140 a wheel provide suprisingly good grip in the dry and wet. Also come with heaps of tread on them.

If anyone else have tried these I would like to hear on your oppinion.

1. $160 per corner
2. Falken azenis , semi slick tyre. 205x50x15(?i think)
3. Peformance is superb...but take a quick thrash or burnout to get them "working"

I reccommend them...as they are cheaper and higher performance than most other road tyres....but u will be buying a new pair every 20,00kms...with a few good track days mind u :)

Soft , not so good in the wet...7.5/10.

Currently running Yokohama A539s 205/50/15, paid $159 per tyre from Bob Jane (Elizabeth st Melbourne)
So far so good, have only done approx 1500kms on them but feel fairly sticky with minimal warming up, have felt just as good inthe wet too, good compromise b/c grip and lifespan. As an added bonus they have a beautiful asymmetrical pattern 8)

Toyo RA-1: an R spec road legal race tyre.

Price for 205/55/16 is $275

Fantastic grip wet & dry - used by some of us in Marque Sports Car Assoc super sprints, and as road tyres.

Mileage on an S2000 road & track - about 20 - 25K with approx. 70 laps on different circuits.

Toyo Trampio Gu:wn [TPG] - A high-performance tyre by Toyo. Purchased @$155 each, in size 195/50/15 "V" speed rated.

At a track day, it was cold, with wet to damp track surface. Found it semi-difficult to find the limit. Most likely a result of my first 'rain' track day. Track dried later in the afternoon. Dry grip is good if not very good, and also predictable. With warmer track temperatures, their stickiness lasts less....

On public roads.....they're a treat (wet or dry) & tyre noise is very quiet.

Yokohama AVS V102
205/55 R16
$221 each

They felt great when I first took them out for a drive. Grip so much better than stock, but still had heaps of roll. The tread is very aggressive and grips just as well in the rain. I can actually "feel" the differences in the forces when going around a corner. Can go faster and smoother. It doesn't squeal, but it scrapes. It helps alot in braking too. I'm very amazed!

Bridgestone Potenza SO2's pole position 205/55/15

I have gone through the Bridgestone range (except for SO3's cos i have never owned a 16" rim) and these are obviously by far the best tyre in their range.

I paid $160 per corner from Box Hill Donnellan's but my wknd contact there has since left :(

not noisy.. but soft... i don;t expect to get much more than 20K km out of them

Maybe it's because the 55 profile is OEM, and thus tyre centres charge more. I picked up my GIIIs in 195/50/15s for $120 a piece fitted and balanced, however the 55 profile was around the $160ish mark. The Bridgestone dude told me they were dearer due to their "stock" status. I'd rather cheaper, lower profile rubber that looks nicer :)
But still...$190 is vulgarly expensive!

IMO the GIIIs are a nice "budget performance" tyre. I haven't had experience with much else, but so far the GIIIs have taken all the abuse I've given them. :)

firenza - are really arent bad street tyres. Best abg for the buck. They are relatively expenisve as its made in japan. Good tyres life. Looses potential progressively with age. Not too good in the wet. i would get them again if i wasnt to track my car.

good year ventura- crap.... they started to tear side ways from my op touring.
wears pretty quick.

Azenis st115- highly recommned.. but tyre life is crap..best wet tyre ive ever driven on..

Bridgestone RE711 215/45/16
1. $210 each
2. Obsolete
3. Fantastic tyres, I have done 20k on these tyres and around 10 track days on it so far. Still have plenty of treads left. Good all round tyre, sad to see Bridgestone not making them anymore.

I will be trying the Toyo TS-1 for road soon on my stockies.

I've just baugh Falcan Azinis RT's... they're unreal! Best tyre I've ever had, never see understear with them but because My rears suck (Goodyear F1s) I have a tendancy to overstear.

Mine are 195/55 R15 cost me $180each. They're considerd a semi track tyre.

They're really soft, you can dig your finger nail into them and the imprint lasts for some time, I spose thats silica for you!

Looks like RE01 is the replacement, too bad we can't get them in Australia.
G3 is ok if you drive it only on the street, the sidewalls are a bit soft compare to RE711's. I am trying the Toyo TS-1 as my next set of tyres, depending on price (it has to be cheaper than Yoko A539 otherwise I won't bother trying them). I will let you guys know once I have those tyres on in a few weeks.

Are you talking about 15 inch tyres? you could get almost everything under $300, even full slick cost you $330 each only

well... best street tyre for 15 inch, i will say Falken RT215 got the most grip on dry, or if you could get AD07 here... and none of the tyres are good on wet, so just ignore it, drive slowly on wet

For semi-slicks, i will say A048 or RSV04(import version), both got very good grip on dry but RSV04 will worn out faster, anyway i got few sets at home cos i got some discount and i just need 1 set only, so going to get rid of the rest of them

So just depends what you like, soft sidewall or stiff sidewall, it really depends your suspension system settings, BS tyres have stiffest sidewall, Toyo and Yoko got softer sidewalls, Falken so so but stiffer than Yoko

Oh sorry, noise.... every semi-slicks are noisy, so can't tell, maybe i should say noise is opposite to grip, errrr.... yeah... kind of

ive experienced 16 and 17 inch, i mean its m3 tyres so it has to be good, i reckon it last long reliability wise, it feels medium compound and 16's 205/55r16 was 220 and 17's were 250 dollars......

Hey Man, I have Goodyear Eagle F1's on my del sol. I think they are fine especially for the price. I got mine on special for $175 a couple of years ago. They have been around for a while unless there is a new model out? Normal driving they have good wear and therefore they are not as sticky as some in the dry. In the wet they are good. I think they are good for their price.

1. Yokohama Aspec 185/70/14 (OE tyre when it came with the car)

don't really remember anything about them, other than that they could withstand a bit of abuse over sydney's crappy roads. lasted 40K

2. Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D2 205/45/16

my first taste of low profile. was reasonably bumpy (well compared to the 14's). very noisy as well. dry grip - excellent. wet grip - unpredictable, may have to do with still riding on stock ride height too. also lasted 40K

3. Dunlop SP Sport 9000 205/40/17

still early days but quite nice. feels the same as the 16's in terms of 'bumpiness'. noticeably not as noisy as the Goodyears. obviously i am a lot more paranoid about kerbing the rims and maintaining reasonable ride quality - hence i am driving less recklessly? also had wheel alignment done. will keep you posted

can you really compare tyres of different profile? to make it 'objective' have to be all the same profile. and of course control all the other variables like wheel alignment, road surface, driving style etc. i could go on

finally, is tyre pressure dependent on tyre profile? or pressure the same regardless of profile - so a very skinny tyre has the same pressure as a big stocky one?

thanks

wynode
08-02-2005, 10:51 PM
Thanks for that Minh.

As for pressure, it depends on the application, and not on the tyre (the same pressure gets applied regardless of the tyre profile/volume inside the tyre :)

7th Gen
09-02-2005, 09:25 AM
(sssh.........no one is supposed to know who i am, keep it all dark and mysterious hehehehehe)

yeh i know the pressure is the same all around the tyre (physics) but what i meant was what is the actual pressure in the tyre? higher pressure for low profile or lower pressure for high profile?

look at the tyre placard? that is just for the stock pressure, useless if you change profiles

i just ask cause i got a GIII brochure and i notice that the inflation pressure is 250 kPA (~36 psi for you imperial measurers out there) for all profiles i.e. from 175/60/14 to 235/40/18

to me that was a bit strange and hence my original question?

i've got toyo trampio gu:wn's on my 17's 205/40
not sure how much they cost, came with the wheels.

but i'd say their great tyres, excellent grip in the dry and wet.
one of the best tyres i've ever had.
but quite noisy. =/
but manageable.

noisy sucks big time =)

are they the top of the range toyos?

who else has what they would consider to be 'top of the range'? (daily driving/street, not slick or track tyre)

for example bridgestone S-03, dunlop SP sport 9000, goodyear F1 GS-D3, michelin pilot sport, pirelli P zero nero/rosso (?), falken FK 451 etc.....

Like I said, it depends on the application.

Lets say you have to tyres with the same tyre pressure but different profiles, the one with a smaller profile will give a harsher ride (because of the stiffer sidewall) and be better around corners.

But you could reduce the pressure in this tyre with a smaller profile and it 'may' behave like a tyre with a higher profile.

But basically it all depends on the application (hope that rambling makes sense)

Falken Ziex 512 - under $200 in 17"

Pros: Really good in the dry. Excellent alloy wheel rim protector. Made in Japan. Silica compound. Low cost. Quiet ride. Impressive wear rate - despite tough life so far they are holding up very well even after 15,000kms.
Cons: Some flex in the side walls when pushed hard. Wet weather performance nothing special - just adequate. Sometimes will aqua plane (VSA in Euro works hard in the wet with these - but only if you are pushing it).
Overall: a softer luxury car tyre - will suit someone looking for good performance in the dry and excellent tread life.

*** update ** The wear went down significantly after 15,000kms. I only got 28,000kms out of these tyres. The wet weather performance got very bad even though there was legal tread. I would not buy these again.

TOYO PROXIS T1R

Awesome tires.............I have them in 215-40/17 size and despite the low profile they are as quiet as my Dunlop 205-50/16's!

Other pluses:
* They stick to the road like rails
* Incredible amount of "feel"
* Excellent tread pattern - very aggressive

Minuses
* Price!

Bridgestone B249 - ~$80ea. I'm very impressed with these tyres. They're quiet, offer good grip in all conditions, perfect for my '84 Civic. Best budget tyre I've seen. Good for 40,000-60,000km.

Bridgestones S-03!!! Bloody Fantastic tyres!!!! They're real aggressive in wet and in dry. The feel is great, response and all! Very Very predictable tyres and they go where you tell them to go.

Much better than the Goodyear F1/G3's. Although not as long to last, well worth every $ spent if you like performance. They're quiet tyres too with very low noise.

Only other tyre that compares or rather i would like to try are the Pirelli Zero Nero.

really? what makes you say that? :D
i'm curious. if the V8 supercar teams use them as the control tyre and an NSX races on dunlop direzzas in JGTC, does that mean they as 'Sh*t as' as well?

a bit dangerous to make a general statement like that without some facts to back it up, huh?

Well thats my opinion. And i was referring to those you ca get at the shops, not the special ones that you order or use for racing.

But in general, I still think they're crap - the whole Dunlop range. You don't see them on any F1 cars.

you're entitled to your opinion :D

but does that mean if a tyre is not on an F1 car it is crap?

no offence, but each manufacturer may have good or bad tyres. and not all tyres are interchangable e.g. i talked to a guy from bridgestone before and he said the NSX runs well only on the OEM tyre, if you put another tyre on it it upsets the balance or something

so again, you're entitled to what you like or don't like. you may have had a bad experience with dunlops hence you feel so strongly about them. but other people may have had a different experience with them and may not feel the same way

I had falken ZE-326
NEVER BUY THEM. They were litarally made the car a deathtrap on wheels... though they never wear, I got rid of them fearing for my safety but I had about 5000km on them and they looked EXACTLY the same as when I got them.
Wet grip was horrible.

I use Kumho 712 now and they seem quite grippy. They are the best tyre I have had but I heard a lot of bad comments about them (grip wise). Any comments about them?

Next I will be getting Goodyead Eagle F1. Friend has them and reckons they are unbelievable

Bridgestone Turanza ER592 - $110ea. Great tyres!! I just got 2 for the front and they offer great grip, they're very quiet, haven't yet tried them in the wet. They're not the best looking tyre around, but I didn't want to pay for performance tyres which only last 20,000km. These should give me a good 50,000km at a minimum. I can't get my EG VTi to understeer with these tyres... I'm not brave enough.

Be warned, they're not performance tyres. But I can handle having slightly less grip in exchange for low noise and long life. I can't wait to try them out on a track day.

I'll adjust this review in a little while to let you know how they're going as they wear.

according to the falken site the rt-615's are meant to be like a gazillion times better.

Vivski
15-05-2005, 07:20 PM
Don't know, but I'm pretty sure they're not the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s I just put on my car.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 - 195/55R15 85W - $154ea. Great grip in the dry, haven't tried them in the wet yet. Mileage... can't say... softish tyre so depends how much you make 'em work. Tyre isn't loud, but it's not as quiet as Bridgestones. Can't hear it over my soft music, so it doesn't bother me.

Now I need to get some good suspension to do the tyres justice.

EDIT: I have now had the tyres a couple of months and I can say I'm very happy with them! Worth every cent so far. Dry grip is fantastic, makes my stock VTi feel very balanced. But the wet grip is excellent. I have driven in wet and slippery conditions and they stuck as though it was dry.
As long as you run the right pressure (I run at ~39 front, ~38 rear) and get some heat in them before you start pushing, these tyres stick in wet or dry.

And in reply to z3lda, sorry for the late reply, but yes the tyres fit, look good and feel even better on the road. Definitely good size for the 15x6.5".

I've got Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 225/45R17 on my euro, and I quite like it. Dry performance I must say is excellent, much much better than stocko dunlop 2050M.
Wet performance, not quite happy, but definitely better than stocko as well. Ride is a bit harsher, but that's probably because of lower profile and stiff sidewall. Noise level is about the same as stocko, so couldn't complain there. Got them for $250 each. Will bring this to track next week and update you on how it perform on the track. I just wish it'll be a dry day, cause I know I definitely won't like the tyre on wet track.

I now have the Dunlop Direzza dz101's on the front now. They were $255 for 205/40/17 apparently a good price for direzza's in the size, considering some places still selling the FM901's for more than this. Suprising how much the price of tyres goes up each year! Some places were quoting me $280 for fm901's. $40 more than last year.

Thought I'd try them. I haven't had any problems, been great in the wet and dry, and they are much quieter compared to the fm901s. When the rear tyres need changing I'll probably also change these to the direzza's.

what are ppls thoughts on Falken Ze-326, i can get 195/50/15 for $95 each

theres been a couple reviews of that tyre somewhere in this thread already.

I would stear clear of the Ziex series. I used to have the ziex 502 and they were absolutely attrocious in the wet. (Perhaps ok for a light car - were ok on my old 3rd gen civic) but any car that's a bit heavier, wouldn't touch them. I mean the tread seriously lasts forever, (40,000km on my set and still heaps of tread until I decided couldn't take the bad handling anymore - this was in my teg) but as soon as there was any slight amount of water on the road, was slipping and sliding all over the place. Aqua planed many a time with this tread on.

LOL. I used to aqua plane with the Ziex tyres on the car when I was doing the speed limit, ie 70 or 80. I'd expect the potenzas you have the handle better than the ziex.

depends on what you want....cheaper tyres, or something that handles well, or something in the middle. Personally I don't care if I spend more on tyres if it saves me on the streets.

Wear rate of the tyre can be known by looking at the "TREADWEAR" on the sidewall of the tyre.....usually there are "TREADWEAR","TEMPERATURE" and "TRACTION".....personally anything between 180 to 240 TREADWEAR is average wear rate.....

running toyo tpg. 205/50/15. rims are 15x7. i must say they are better than i expected. fair price.

the tread grips well to the road in dry and i feel i can brake later than b4 for the same distance or i dont have to press as hard on the brakes to get the same result. corners i can take alot harder and hugs the corner alot better without signs of sliding or major understeer.

also quiet tyres. no noise that i can notice and thats going quite hard around corners.

ran track for a day .. 30+ laps. in the wet they held ok. but wasnt that special,.. but on dry they keep up nice in high speeds (rpm around red line most of the time) started to lose abit more near the end of the last session.

after track day. obivously abit worn out than b4, but still good grip and holds well also. good street tyre.

dont know how they compare to others.

Having being able to properly try Pirelli's new Ultra High Performance Dragon.

This is my verdict...

Got off the phone with Pirelli Australia, the wear rate is 300 out of 400, so I guess that is good wear rate.

http://www.au.pirelli.com/en_AU/tyres/catalog/tyre_product.jhtml?selected=desc&productid=17126&catid=AU_UHP

The grip in both wet and dry conditions are fantastic I must say having used a fair bit of different tyres on cars with very much almost the same weight, the cornering, unbelievable, one of the thread pattern is supposed to assist cornering speeds and it works very well!

This tyre is still fairly new in the market so feedback is limited, but this is my opinion, I highly welcome any feedbacks from users with the same tyres...

I just got Yokohama C.Drives (I think they're the successor to the A539?) all-round on my EK1, and they're absolutely brilliant. I paid $135 a corner for 195/50/R15. Once warmed up it's near impossible to lose grip in the dry, and they hold up really well in the wet.

The only thing I can fault them on is that they're a little noisier than some others on the highway, and apparently they don't wear as well as other options due to the soft compound. I've only had mine for about 500km though, so I'll have to wait and see on that one...

I've got coilovers on now and the a539's are really good on corners compared to stock...(heaps improvement) with treadwear just above the indicator.

I've had these yoko's for about 47,000 k's and are really good in the wet still

i had silverstone 215/35/17 before and they were terrible, they were noisy as hell. i just got 4 new nankang NSII 205/40/17 and they're really quiet and hold really well around the same corner i used to take around my house. i used to do 60 around that corner with the silverstones and i do atleast 70 now with the nankangs. really good value for money.

ive got c-drives fitted and balanced for 140ea....quoted es100 160 i think...this is in melb btw

if ur looking at a539 get c-drives and u'll b alot happier probably same price but better then the a539 in all departments according to many reviews as it is the successor to a539 u would expect them to be better anyway.....

from experience having had a539 and then swaping to the c-drive i can say c-drive are better if not atleast equal to the a539...

I'm looking around for tyres to fit my 18x8 rims.
and the vast difference in prices for different brands of tyres make me wonder if the price is a reflection of the difference in quality or just a premium that you pay for the brand? Tyres that i'm looking at.
Cheaper brands <$200
Federal SS595
Nankang NS2
Silverstone FTZ
Kumho Esta 711
Hankook K104

More expensive
Pirelli P zero rosso ~500
Toyo T1R ~300
Falken RT215 ~400

I'm willing to pay more for quality but are the more expensive tyres worth the extra money? I do plan to take the car to the track once in awhile but most of the driving willl be on the street...
it'll be great if i could get some reviews on the cheaper tyres and how they perform compared to the more expensive tyres...and any other tyres that i should keep a lookout for?
cheers

']anyone have experience with falken azenis rt-215 or rt-615?

rt-215 pictured
http://www.falkentire.com/images/IMGtire_rt215_angle.jpg

they sounds great for dry conditions but was just concerned about how they'd be in the wet and how fast they wear. my tire guy raves about them but wanted to see if anyone here had used them.

according to the falken site the rt-615's are meant to be like a gazillion times better.

The RT-615's should be available in aus roughly mid october.

excellent tyre, cost almost 1200 for a set of 4.

if u want a bit cheaper but still want a excellent german made tyre then go check out Fulda tyres

these 2 brands are the tyre of choice from merc and bmw and jags and them.

u could get a falken or potenzas for the same price, if u want performance only. i got these tyres cause they're comfortable tyres, really quiet and are excellent in the wet

Stay away from Hankook Ventus K102. Absolute crap. They were on my car when i bought them and are the worst tyre ever. 205/55/15 on my dc2, don't know the cost buy i wouldn't pay more than $1 per corner. They are so damn hard i reckon they take grooves out of the road.

Everyone was going on about how good the grip on G3's are but from what i've read in this forum lately, they are a budget performance tyre with "OK" grip levels. Do they stick well for a hard twisties session?

Today i purchased a set of Bridestone G3's :)
195/50/15 $110 per corner!

In the dry they are awesome tyres. I took my friend around a few corners, when you skid they hardly make any noise at all, they just grip to the ground like glue!

In the afternoon it started to rain so i took my car to some bigger roads to see how they would hold up, they did pretty good i have to say. Not much slipping and sliding but there was some.

And all my car has are just a few bars!

Overall they are awesome tyres i couldn't be more happy with my purcahse worth every $$$

Heres my cut,
So far ive tried yokohama something or rathers. they say s306 on the side. they are 185/60/14 and came with the car. very good for milage and cheap as hell, good for someone who gets a lot of punctures and they last a lot longer that profiles since they are less prone to uneven wear.

Ive run gy f1s on the front of dads car, did not like them, no rim guard, and wore out too fast! they are too soft for me and i found a lot of sidewall flex. didnt get value for money with them, good grip but i'd rather spend that money on something else.

Had a set of nankangs, made in malaysia and very good value! top tyre and lasts long. they were ns1 though, not sure about the ns2. whats the diff anyway? i would recommend these to anyone who wants good looking performance tyres, with great milage for performance tyre but who are not willing to pay up for top of the range.

Currently running toyo tranpath on dads car. not good on looks (obvious milage tyre & no big logo on side or design of anysort so kinda look cheap) but they are ultra smooth!!! i mean so smooth, the smoothest ive felt. also chose them since they are made in japan, have good reputation and are cheap for a 16" profile at $160-190/corner. i would not buy them for my own car though.

I am still looking for the perfect rims for my car, but until then ill keep my stock 14s. when i get my rims, i will be looking at;

If i get performance tyres;

-bs g3s. love that rimguard, athough some claim g3s are outdated and that there is a better range out now.
-falken azenzis look cool and have remarkable grip, also, H-T recommends them and u always see ppl with them nowadays.
-toyo proxes, love em! these are also gaining popularity but at that price it might be safer to buy tried and tested g3s

If i get a milage tyre;

-will research these yoko avid series and see what i come up with. i recommend yoko for milage of all else.

BTW its good to see we are getting some input on s03s!! i always wanted a pair but now i am leaning towards getting 15" rims, and i don't think s03s come in that size.

Can someone tell me more about their experiences with yoko a539s?

On my DC2R i have the street slick 215 faulken azenzis. They grip like nothing ive ever used!! They just hold on and hold on and when they do decide to let go its like sliding a go cart out... Must metion that ive got cusco sussy, whiteline sway bar tie bar which has pretty much got rid of any body roll. etc... Anyway they are bloody awesome.

Even so ive decided to go with some yoko's for my front cause the Faulkens are pretty skittish in the wet, they are not top of the line, but at 240per shoe they were recomended, and still should ride out ok according to the try guy i spoke with. will keep ya posted cause there on there on monday

Really? I don't understand, why does a tyre loose grip when heated? I thought racecars take a warm up lap, partially to warm up their slicks.

I checked out yokohama.com.au and found no avid h4s (H-T's legendary all season milage tyre) but found the a.drive r1 that looks the same so im guessing thats what we call them here.

Yokohama AVID H4S;

Yokohama A.Drive R1;
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/6452/yokohamaadriver13qp.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Went to some dealers and got some pamphlets and some well recommended tyres like s03s have no details on having 205/50/15 sizes. On the contrary, places like tyrerack.com say so3s come 205/50/15. does this mean that australia doesnt get them in 15" whilst US does? Has nyone got, or seen s03s in 15"?
I know i could just ask the dealers but the reason im addressing this is because many other tyres have the same situation, such as the avid h4s or a.drive r1s. Can someone explain this?

I have eagle f1 gs-d3, was fortunate enough to drive with them on for track and daily driving. grip level is excellent in the dry. Haven't let me down so far. Wet is ok, not excellent, but ok. Noise wise, it's a bit quiter than the stock dunlop.

civicdacbiet

Never tried any dunlop tyre so i can't comment on them. Im rather surprised that some are claiming that g3s are noisy. There were other posts that were consistently saying how quiet they were and by looking at the tread and knowing their compound, i'd say they are pretty quiet performers compared to say, so3s.
F1's are known to aquaplane and their compound is not as suited for the wet as the g3. I found it only to be a small difference however, but in the dry they get the two thumbs up. Like i said earlier, the only reason i would not buy them again is because there's now a greater variety of good performers out there that would do less damage to my wallet.
Seems everywhere i go now people are raving on about falken azenzis and toyo proxes for the obvious reasons. My question is which is better between the two?

Has anyone tried these before?

Toyo Proxes 4

Yokohama A539 (i wanna get c drives but dont come in 205/40/17 :( )

Hey steve, id be choosing between g3s and a539s because i have already tried some gyf1s that were the top of the gy range at that time and i was not 100% satisfied with them as i mentioned earlier.
Proxes are good imo but if i were going to get a new design like such, id go with something more differentiated like the falken azenzis. Proxes 4 resembles the typical performance tyre imo, and if i wanted that id get the g3s which i know to have a rimguard (very useful with 17" rims with 40 profiles!!!) but i don't know if proxes 4 have the rimguards.
For milage, yoko are the way to go. Our family has used yokos for years and find them so durable and look decent too. To my belief, there are many good reviews on the a539, and many peeps recommend them.
G3s have number 1 reputation so ud be safe with them, it depends if u want to try something new and different. Its ur choice in the end, but getting them in ur size is gonna be pretty pricey! I've bought tyres for 215/45/17 and my wallet is still recovering.

just got some new tyres from EG5.
Toyo Proxes 4 !!!
NEW stock, highly recommended Bang for buck.
not sure on mileage yet as it is only a day old, but compared to my GIII's less noise and handling is pretty similar.
also cheaper than GIII's contact EG5 for all your toyo needs.

Toyo latest range : Proxes 4

Anyone have experience with these tyres (195/50R15):

Firestone Wide Oval: $110
Potenza GIII: $125
Yokohama C-Drive: $130

Which is a better wet weather tyre?

a friend of mine has these on his RS impreza, i don't know if it's the AWD system or the tyres but it grips damn well in the wet, in the dry they're very sticky.

Dont rule out the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s. They might be a little more $$ (shop around to get a good price), but they're an excellent tyre. Fantastic dry grip and you hardly notice a difference when the road's wet (I can't believe how much wet grip it has). Very good water clearance. I'm getting very good life out of mine, I just make sure they're at the right pressure and rotated regularly.
I can't compare them to the competition, 'cos I haven't used GIII, C-drive or Azenis. But I can say the GS-D3 is an excellent choice, a very safe tyre.

Well I decided to go with the C.Drives. Went up a size too, to 195/55R15 (load ratings were too low on the old tyres) $165 each it cost me in the end. The GS-D3s were $185. Current impressions are quite good. Although turn-in is sacrificed with the higher sidewall, there is a *lot* more grip than my old el-cheapo tyres. At least 10-15 km/h higher cornering speeds and more balanced. Wet weather performance is mind-blowing over the oldies, however the GS-D3s may well be better in that respect by the looks of the tread pattern. These still look cool though. Recommended :)

Just to bump the thread up. I'll be putting on a set of C.Drives on the gf's car (195/60 R15) tomorrow. Getting it for $150. Will update the post on initial impressions and after running in.

Just got the Yokohama C.Drives fitted. Damn they are silent! I could not pick up any tyre roar except at very low speeds of 10-20km/h. Handling-wise, the car does not lose grip and slide out anymore, but the initial turn-in with the Astra has understeer. After the short amount of understeer, the car goes back neutral again. I'm not sure if it is the suspension or whether I am expecting too much out of the Astra after driving my Euro for a long while. Roundabouts that I usually take at speeds which are comfortable without body roll suddenly induce understeer and bodyroll. Noise-wise, I would dump my SP 2050m tyres for the C.Drives. Handling-wise, I'll have to find someone who has tried it or just bite the bullet and go for them once my Dunlops wear out.

Edit: Drove more with the tyres, and now it does not have the initial understeer. It was the rubber needing to be scrubbed. For now, I can attain similar speeds to the Euro, but with tyre squeal. Eventhough it's squealing, there is still more than enough grip available as I am not losing grip eventhough I am accelerating mid corner. These tyres are good!

From wot i understand, Firestone is owned by Bridgestone. The Firehawk Wide Oval tyre, one of their street performance tyres is very similar to the BS GIII's, and apparently comes off the same production line or factory as the BS tyres. That basically means it has similar technology and production quality as the BS tyres... So for a cheaper alternative to the GIII's, u can definitely go for the Firestone Wide Oval.

Anyway, this is wot i've heard and one of the guys at my local Bridgestone Tyre Centre also told me that. So yer... look up the website and i think both tyres are on the same site.

I think the C.Drives should be a better buy over the FM901 if you are staying on the road. It's silent, reasonably priced (195/60R15 for $150 at Bondi Junction, so you can get it cheaper elsewhere) and grips better than my Dunlop 2050m's. And the C.Drive looks like a lower profile tyre for some reason. I look at my 195/60R15 and it looks like it was a 195/40R15 instead. I think it's because of the slightly wider sidewall.

I really recommend Hankook Ventus K104 Sports.
I have 215/35ZR18 on my SSS Pulsar and even in the wet they managed to provide sensational grip for medium level traffic light launches. In the dry, 6000rpm + slide your foot of the clutch sideways and they hooked up perfectly.

If you saw the drift Nationals, you would have seen the Hankook Monaro and the control it had in the wet with K104's.

I paid about 250rrp for 215/35R18's so anything in smaller sizes should be MUCH cheaper.

Also make sure that when buying lower profile tyres, that you ask the dealer what tyre pressure you should be running.

Next time I need tyres, this is what I will be fitting:

Bob Jane has it. Not the cheapest, but you get a free 2nd alignment after 3 months. And if you buy 4 Yokohama tyres from them, you get a $50 BP fuel card. That's if you like BP Ultimate. :)

Need advice on 205/40/17 tyres. My current choices are;
1. Yoko A539 (~$250s)
2. Dunlop LE702 (been quoted $215)
3. Dunlop FM901

What you guys reckon? I really don't wanna spend more than $215 per tyre so my choice would be LE702, but I need ur opinions. How does LE702 compare to A539?

The equivalent of the Yoko A539 are the C.Drives. I'm not sure on the price in that size though. But if you are having trouble finding A539 stock, then C.Drive is the current model that is meant to replace A539.

Melb info - For S.E Suburbs the Tyrepower near Monash union blackburn road is awesome prices and service, genuinly good guy. Or Traction and Tyres or something Kellets road Rowville, good job, good prices.

For a539's i got mine for $115 each fitted, 250 is way too much. Make sure you let them know you are shopping around and u know ure stuff, ie load ratings, sizes etc, cos if u are noob they will rip u off.

Cheers
