View Full Version : When Is An Oil Cooler Necessary?

I've been thinking lately about whether it would be a worthwhile investment to fit an oil cooler to my DC2 (vtir), it gets driven hard occasionally for periods of 15-30min and may one day see a lap or two at the track. It's just that my previous car, an SX Corolla (AE92 with 4AGE) came stock with a small cooler, but I'd heard this was to aid a slight deficiency in the basic systems ability to keep cool in some circumstances.
Should I be considering this addition?
Educated answers would be much appreciated. :D

oil coolers on street cars arent very necessary

mainly used for track cars that are driven hard at all times

an oil cool is needed when your oil temps exceed their optimal operating temp.

If you don't know your oil temps or their optimal operating temp, don't bother with an oil cooler.

hardly a reason for an oil cooler

Get an oil temp guage so you can monitor your temp and if it reaches high levels you can take it easy to cool it down
