Euro oil consumption/bearing failure

Mate of mine's car used heaps of oil from new. Dealer reckoned this was 'normal' - like 200-300ml every few weeks? Don't think so. Anyway at 10,000km he hears a knocking noise and its the main bearing. Took ages to get them to fix it. Its OK now, but that sort of thing is a big worry in a modern car. I did a search and saw that some of the guys on here had oil consumption issues with 01 cars (I think it was integra). Any of you Euro guys (or V6) had similar issues?

In the US, there is one guy drinking 1L per 1600km. In the end Acura rebuilt the engine for him. After that it still did the same. Now they are replacing the block for him. From all the posts about oil consumption in the US version of the Euros, it's because of running in the first 1000km period on the highway.
