speedo problem with 93 prelude

hey im having problems with the speedo in 1993 model prelude
needle is sticking at 40kmh to 50kmh but revs are very high and definatly going faster, does not happen all the time and mainly happens when changing into 4th gear. Car is 5spd manual
Have taken car to two different mechanics who apparently tighten up speed sensor?????? and said there is nothing wrong!!!
problem still continues
Has any one ever had this problem or has idea of the cause, or if you know of a good honda specialist in Adelaide South Australia

have you had any work done to your dials, like those white facia's,

if some one has had the dash apart and had a play in there, then your needle could be sticking.

if it cut in and out, then your VSS could be faulty.

car has all original dash and dials
previous owner 50 yr old doctor so i doubt he was messing about under dash
this fault is very intermitant, can drive for 30mins to 1 hour and it be fine but can drive for 5 mins and it will stick, brake change gear again and it be fine
maybe the two mechanics i saw dont know that model????

sounds like a problem with yoru dials, may need cleaning, realignment or replacing

just to get this right

what happens is your car will speed up, you needle will move up, then it will get stuck at 50 as you speed up to 60, the needle will then jump from 50 to 60 ???


or

you speed up to 60, as your increacing speed, your needle will drop to 0 then up to 50 down to 0 up to 60 and so on.

with the two above symptoms are different problems that cause it

have you ever noticed the engine light or S4 or 4WS light come on at all ???

This is correct, although once it is stuck at 50 i can rev out 4th gear with no dial movement(still stuck on 50) usaully when change into 5th jumps up to a more accurate speed
No engine or 4ws light comes on

you have a fault with your instumentation cluster

you will have to change the speedo/odometer assembly for a perminant fix

I had the same problem. Its the VSS (speedo sensor) located on top of the transmission. cost me $80 to buy it second hand and $40 to fit.

Try checking your speedo cable where it meets the tranny, or it could be the speedo cable itself.

i have the same problem....happens like oncea month....gets stuck on 45km/h...but when i stop it goes back to normal....very strange
