hi all, i changed my timing belt today and all went well, but i think i had the tensioning bolt on too tight, and its holding in the belt too tightly? about 0.5cm swinging from left to right, is this o? os wehn i start an drive my car, it sounds like a turbo spolling up? like zeeeeeeeziiiiiiiiiiii kinda sound, so yeh should i take everything out and retension or is this ok? thanx heaps

i agree with destrukshn, if it sounds like a turbo spooling it seems to be more of a loose tb then a tite one. but then im not 100% sure.

It will most likely shred the teeth from being to tight. Also the cams might start to "dig" into the cam journals. Once that starts if you don't have a shop that can weld aluminum and line hone something that small you'll be getting a new head.

It doesn't look that bad and it really wasn’t hard to fix, but the cams seized, tore out the teeth on the belt and if it was a zero-clearance motor would have busted more then the belt. I would retension the belt as soon as you get a chance.

um i think the timing belt was on too tight. i took everything apart again, ac belt, altnater belt ect and re-did the tension bolt and did it up up again but loosened the tension abit first, put everything back and yeh, no more sound :)

it would of been to tight dude

loose belts make a flapping sound, tight belts make that wuring sound

Yes, the ONLY time you over tighten is if you use a fully aftermarket valvetrain and a better belt. The springs in my head are 2 times as strong as the stock ones so the cams want to jump out, so when we tighten it, we help hold it in place. Not the best thing but since the car isn't really a daily driver and sees about 5000 miles a year it's fine. Just a little trick we do in our cars.

also helps stop belt flapping between Cams
