Anyone know anything about it on the Civic? I'm hoping to use whatever information I gather to help me modify my sound system without having to rewire the car or add in an amplifier. I don't think the Bass Works system on the 06 Civic has an amp; the little unit according to my mate is just an external crossover unit or something. I'm also guessing it doesn't require much in terms of power (ie. no need for extra wiring) because otherwise it wouldn't be a dealer fit accessory... right?

Any specs/info on the bass works system, speaker size/specs, it's installation, or the deck outputs would be appreciated.

The Kit comes with two 6.5" speakers. The cones and magnets are beefier than the stock units but nothing like you would get from a decent set of aftermarket units. It also comes with a crossover unit that night have a small built in amp. It obtains the inputs from the original wiring (Left/Right rear channel) and gets power from the boot light and brake light via an all in one harness.

I got the kit from a US dealer for about $450 shipped... the result is that the sound is fuller but its not going to gie you sub bass performance. Im disappointed with the fronts actually.. we should get tweeters to brighten things up alittle.

Wow 6.5"? Does this mean if I put in my own pair of kickass 6.5" speakers in the back, it'll be good? I'm thinking of getting some quality speakers from Lifestyle and putting them in the back with an external crossover unit and low pass converter to get better bass? Also, my rear interior brake light (the one inside the car behind the glass) is disabled I think because I have a LED brake light on my spoiler.

By any chance would you know if I can fit 6.5" in the front? I'm hoping to buy the Boston Acoustic S60 or Pro60 (if I can find it at a decent price), but I'm not sure if they'll fit up front because the JB Hifi guy reckons it's only a 6" slot.

By any chance would you know what that box is? (nb. I have an Australian Civic VTi-L) I'm guessing it might be the rear interior brake light (also note, mine is disconnected since my spoiler has LED light enabled).

Ps. Thanks so much for your advice- can you provide any more info about the kit and how it was installed- in particular, the power connection from the brake light? And if the 6.5" speakers easily fit into the moulds- I thought it was 6" not 6.5". Got any photos by any chance? Thanks heaps for your help.

Nah im pretty sure they're 6.5" units... the back shelf is metal so if you install your own aftermarket units you might need to do alittle custom work. A decent pair of aftermarket speakers will do a good job but the Honda kit has that OEM look. you get the rossover and the harness that takes the signal and power and bundles it into one thick cable. It wouldnt matter if your brake light is disabled as the harness for the kit plugs into the power cable that would be used for the light... the brake light simply piggybacks into the harness and shares the power.

The Fronts ive been told are 6.5" units... the only problem youll need to consider is how deep the speakers you plan to buy will go... usually the more powerful units will have bigger deeper magnets and this will require spacers (made by the installer) From the look of the doors it looks as if theyll accept a fair decent sized set of speakers.

Cant be sure.. but im guessing its the rear brake light unit..

As i suggested, do a search on google for "2006 Civic accessories" the online stores in the US that sell these have links to the PDF installation manuals for all the accessories. The harness that comes with the bass kit piggybacks the power connections from the interior boot light and brake light and plugs into the crossover unit. The speakers have one bolt and clip into the shelf on the other end... (hard to describe.. check the installation manual)
I bought mine oversea's and installed it myself.. only took 45mins. A very easy install.

Thanks for your help.

For all others interested, according to this site http://www.handa-accessories.com/civelec06.html ; there is an amp.

Genuine Honda Civic bass system kit. Adds smooth, deep bass to the factory autio system. Includes 2 speakers and manually adjustable amplifier unit.
Replaces the stock rear speakers. Radio ballance control doesn't affect the bass speakers, the front rear fader does.
Not for Coupe EX or Si models or 4-door GX model.
Includes attachment kit and all parts needed for installation.

Cheers, I will continue reading up on it and then any more things I'll post again in this thread. Thanks again :)

Just a correction, the black box above is the middle passenger seatbelt unit and not the brake light as first thought.

Btw ended up getting a subwoofer/amp installed because replacing the front/rear speakers with quality aftermarkets wouldn't really result in much gain in bass- esp without an amp; so for same price, just ended up putting in amp + sub.

As far as car stereos go - the standard Civic setup sounds fairly bad.

Well to be fair, most joe bloggs would find it totally acceptable. One person's average standard is mine for fairly crap.

The bass-works system is also fairly 'average'. It's an improvement but if you're an audiophile, you'd probably want to consider an aftermarket set.

If only you can make my car's system sound as good as my etymotic earphones. I don't know whether it's legal to wear canalphones whilst driving (seeing it blocks quite a bit of outside noise) but I do it anyway ... :P Actually, come to think of it - the damn canalphones cost about as much as the bass-kit :$

actually, if someone was an audiophile they wouldnt even bother improving a stereo in a car! its just the worst environment to work with.

Im not game enough to install my set of Alpine DDlinear's as most installers wont have had any experience with the new civic... the car is so quiet that any sqeaks and rattles will show up big time.
