WARNING: Due to the low budget of this DIY, I have not been able to do any crash testing. PUT A DIFFERENT MODEL SRS WHEEL ON YOUR CAR AT YOUR OWN RISK.

In this DIY, I will describe how to install another SRS wheel into your existing SRS Honda, Just because this DIY is based on a S2000 wheel into a 5th Gen ATTS Lude, there is no reson you cannot use parts of this DIY to install a CTR wheel into an EJ civic, the concept is the same. this DIY will describe how to wire up the cruise control for a Prelude. You will have to figure it out for other cars.

Just some important things to know about Honda SRS systems.

- Never cut any SRS wiring
- Never resolder any SRS wiring
- do not tamper with any of the wires housed in Yellow conduit
- do not probe the inflator ( airbag ) with a multi meter
- always disconnect both battery terminals (neg 1st) and wait 3 min before unpluging any SRS components.
- never leave an inflator face down on the ground.

some Type I and type II SRS systems have the SRS ECU housed on the back of the airbag inflator in the stearing wheel, these types of wheels are not interchangable and you cannot change them, for example ( as far as I know )

4th gen Preludes
EG civic,
EK Civic

so here we go

Aim: Pimp your Ride

Required:
14mm socket
Pillips Head Screw driver
size 30 torx bit and a tool to drive it
multi meter
1n4004 diode
small flat head screw driver
die grinder/ file / or angle grinder,

Steps: 1

The 1st step is to remove both battry terminals, start with the negative terminal and then follow on with the positive terminal. When both terminals are off wait 3 minuits before disconecting any SRS components.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel001.jpg

STEP: 2

remove the two acess covers to gain acess to the Inflator connector and mounting bolts.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel002.jpg

STEP: 3

locate and undo the two torx bolts with a 30 size torx bit ( size 27 also works but you risk damaging the bolt )

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel003.jpg

http://http://b16a2.kicks-ass.net/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel006.jpg

STEP: 4

pull the inflator back towards you, you will see the yellow inflator connector ( red arrows bellow ). Pull the connector foreskin back and pull the connectors apart. Allow the foreskin to slide back as this acts as a short for the inflator's wiring to prevent static discharge.

Unplug the Horn connector ( yellow arrow pic bellow ), then Unplug the cruise control connector ( green arrow bellow ).

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel009.jpg

STEP: 5

Place the Inflator on the ground, in a dry cool area with the facing up shown in pic bellow

this is VITAL, NEVER STORE A SRS WHEEL FACE DOWN, if it goes of, its airborn, you will find it 1km or so away from where it was sitting, not to mention the big hole in your roof.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel010.jpg

STEP: 6

Undo the stearing wheel bolt/nut shown in step 4 by the blue arrow.

5th Gen Preludes use a bolt with a 14mm head., turn it counter clockwise.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel012.jpg

STEP: 7

do not take the nut/bolt compleatly off, leave it on 4 or so turns. the idea of this is to stop the wheel flying off and hitting you in the head when you pull it off, and you will be pulling hard, trust me. Before my days of automotive knowledge, I knocked myself out cold this way and had FORD bruised in to my forehead backwards. go ahead laugh, everyone els does.

Now with one or two feet on the floor of the car pull with all your might as shown in the red arrows bellow. The wheel should slip out of its splines. If it does not you can use a Puller Kit to remove it as the wheel has two threaded holes in it. But you should be able to yank it off. When it Budges, remove the center nut and center the wheel and remove the wheel. carefull of the wiring loom as you remove it. Never pull on the cable reel or its wires

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel013.jpg

STEP: 8 ( for ATTS 5th Gen Preludes ONLY )

place both both your wheels on a bench. Bellow is a comparison pic, the lude wheel is at the back with the S2000 Wheel in front

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel014.jpg

Time to do a comparison of the two wheels, pay attention to the notches on the wheels noted by the red arrows in the pics bellow.

5th gen ATTS Prelude wheel bellow

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel015.jpg

S2000 Wheel Bellow

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel016.jpg

notice how the ATTS wheel has an extra notch due to a ATTS sensor, we have to add this to the S2000 wheel. you can still use the S2000 wheel on a civic or non ATTS lude after you have added this notch, so dont worry about devaluing your wheel.

Line up the wheels as shown in the Pic bellow and mark out with a black marker where the notch should be. Line up the wheel in such a way you get the notch on the correct side.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel022.jpg

now grind a notch the same depth and location into the S2000 wheel as on the Prelude wheel. pay attention and dont mess up, make sure you put the notch on the corect side.

I use this tool to do it, its a die grinder, used to port and polish heads, and lots of other cool stuff, but you can use a file or an angle grinder, just dont make a mess of it.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/tool001.jpg

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel023.jpg

this is what you should have

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel027.jpg

STEP: 9 ( for Preludes with cruise control )

now we have to figure out the cruise control wiring as the S2000 wheel has a 5 pin connector on its buttons and the Preludes have a 4 pin connector, so we have remove the pins from the connectors and reinsert them into a specific order into the S2000 5 pin connector.

dont worry if you have a Prelude, I have figured it out for you.

this is what you have to do.

remove the cruise control switch pannel off both wheels, 2x phillips head scews per wheel.

do a continuity test of both stearing wheels cruise control buttons.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel028.jpg

here are the results

S2000 5 pin connector ( pic above )

pins ( back side of connector )

___________
1 2 3 4 5
_________

1= SET/ DECEL
2= n/a
3= Common
4= n/a
5= Resume/Accel

Prelude 4 pin connector ( looking at the pin side of the connector )

________
1 2 3 4
_______

1 = n/a
2 = SET/ DECEL
3 = Resume / Accel
4 = Common

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel030.jpg

1 = air bag inflator
2 = air bag inflator
3 = SET/Decel
4 = Accel/Resume
5 = common
6 = Horn
7 = n/a

so now its time to remove the connectors from the wiring looms, start on the S2000 wheel.

get a 1N4004 rectifire diode and poke it in the hole of the connector shown in the pic bellow, you can use anything similar.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel031.jpg

this is what your aiming to do in the connector to free the pin

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel037.jpg

by poking in there your opening those thwo tabs with the green bits on them, allowing the pin to be free'd from the connector,

pull on the wire as shown bellow, be carful, dont pull to hard

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel032.jpg

slide the pin out, do not loose the green connectors.

do the same to the car

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel038.jpg

thats it for now for the cruise control, we have to do some more later on.

STEP: 10

time to fit the S2000 wheel to the prelude, make sure you fit the wheel so its in the center position, not left or right hand down. ( so it drives stright when you are driving straight. )

Connect the horn connector shown bellow by the red arrow, and guide the 3 cruise control wires through to the area where the button are ment to be.
red arrow bellow for 3x grey wires.

STEP: 11 ( for Cruise control only )

time to fit the cruise control switch 5 pin connector we removed earlier from the S2000 wheel.

do it as follows

from the pics above in step 8 of the cable real on the prelude colunm

1 = air bag inflator
2 = air bag inflator
3 = SET/Decel
4 = Accel/Resume
5 = common
6 = Horn
7 = n/a

plug the conectors in to the 5 pin connector as follows

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel045.jpg

Prelude cable real .....................S2000 5 pin connector shown above
1 = air bag inflator
2 = air bag inflator
3 = SET/Decel.........................pin 5
4 = Accel/Resume....................pin 1
5 = common............................pin 3
6 = Horn
7 = n/a

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel043.jpg

slide back into place the green locking tab to lock the pins into the connector.

plug in the cruise control switches and remount it onto the wheel.

STEP: 12

now locate the cable guides in the wheel, fit the SRS wires shown in the yellow circle below and the horn wire shown in the blue circle below

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel047.jpg

STEP: 13

fit the wheel center bolt/nut, start it by hand then do it up tight clockwise. If you dont know how tight to do it, consult the workshop manual.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel048.jpg

STEP: 14

fit the inflator ( airbag ) and reconnect its connector, make sure it snapps into place and is on properly.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel050.jpg

STEP: 15

now fit the two torx bolts, do them up loosly as you 1st put them in, then tighten them when your happy where your Inflator sits in the wheel, again do them up tight, but not super tight. consult your workshop manual for specs.

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel051.jpg

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel053.jpg

now fit the covers for the wheel

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel054.jpg

now reconnect the battery ( neg ) terminal 1st then the ( pos ) terminal, start the engine, and make sure the SRS light goes out after 8 seconds, if it does you have done well,

take the car for a drive and make sure

- the Horn works
- the cruise control works
- Vtec engages
- ATTS works
- the wheel is center when driving straight
- The indicators self return check both sides

thats it

http://ecu-man.com/diy/s2k-wheel/s2000-Wheel055.jpg

I can confirm the following for anyone who cares

you can put a CTR wheel on a

EM Civic
EJ civic
5th Gen Prelude

You can put a S2000 Wheel on a

EM Civic
EJ civic
5th Gen Prelude

you can put a EJ wheel on a 5th Gen Prelude ( not that you would want to :) )

enjoy

I would Like to thank Jayse for his assistance with this DIY
cheers dude :thumbsup:

if anyone has any experiences with different Honda SRS wheels on there car in an acident, please post them here.

Unfortunately the EG has the SRS ECU on the back of the inflator in the wheel, which means you can only put a SRS wheel with ECU that was designed for EG.

what support do ek's have

similar to em/ej?

as far as I can remember, the EK had the SRS ECU in the wheel as well,

if you wanna take a photo of the SRS connector on you wheel, we can find out for sure, Just have to take a cover off.

i contemplated doing this a while ago, but i came to the conclusion that as the ludes air bag is deisgned specifically for the lude will adding a wheel with a bag design for an s2k possibly be risking our lives in the possibility of a crash?

its a great write up and i always loved the thought of a ctr wheel (this is the one like the s2k but with the square silver bottom yeah?)

how much did the wheel cost ya? and how much would a ctr wheel cost?

ECU-MAN
24-04-2006, 02:20 AM
no Idea on cost, was not my car.

the ECU determins the when to ignite the inflator and we have not changed that.

their is a bit of a difference between CTR and S2000 Wheel,

s2000 wheel uses the entire airbag as the horn, you just press it.

the CTR has Horn Buttons either side,

CUL8R
24-04-2006, 08:56 AM
but what i mean is once its fully inflated. they will have different shapes, eg if the s2k launches a big/long rectangular type airbag due to the shape of the cabin. maybe the lude launches a more square shorter airbag.

airbags inflate at a HUGE velocity, this could result in it knocking ur head off (a bit extreame but u know what i mean)

basically what im trying to say is maybe the volume of the s2k airbag is much larger than the prelude airbag(or vice versa).
airbags are designed specific for each car, lets say the ludes airbag volume is much smaller, since they are now exploding in the same allowed volume(the ludes cabin) the s2k wheel will fill a larger proportion of the volume, this couldnt be safe?

might be worth noting this in ur disclaimer

ECU-MAN
24-04-2006, 09:15 AM
you raise a very valid point,

the initial thread has a disclaimer on it for the entire thread :), But Ill add some thing in there.

I have added another disclaimer on the 1st page

good man, yeah i just thought if someone (god forbid) had a really serious accident u coulda been liable for stuff.

neways its a fantastic write up, much better than any others ive read about fitting an s2k wheel on a lude. good work man!

CUL8R
24-06-2006, 02:29 PM
alrighty, im bumping and old thread in hope for an answer.
got a Prelude SiR wheel and decided to fit it today, everything went fine but i got one issue, i couldnt get the wheel right to the end? should it just slide on or should it be as tight as a frigid 18yo? coz i mean this is something cronic, got big metal objects lined em up with the metal on the inside and hit it with a hammer(scared to absolutly belt the shit through it). ive tried finness and ive tried brute force, neither worked lol.
is there a trick im missing or do i have to modify something? just to give u an idea as to how far its gone the indicators do not click back so i have yet reached that plastic thing on the inside.
my lude is non atts.

i think i figured it out on the drive to work tonight....looks to not be on straight. just parked it perfect then, will take it off and put it back on, hopefully straight.

CUL8R
25-06-2006, 03:10 PM
so i got it straight, another issue lol. the srs light has come on, its not the fuse and im resetting the ecu as i speak. however i now have lost the indicator snap back thing. if resetting the ecu wont clear the srs issue i might snap lol
the reason the srs light has come on is coz i started the car up with the airbag off and the screw barely on so i could go for a real slow drive down the street to make sure the wheel is cenered, i realise this was prob a bad idea but i hope resetting the ecu will do the trick.

ECU-MAN
25-06-2006, 11:05 PM
yeah man, resetting the ecu will do it

remember just pulling the fues or disconnecting the battery isnt going to do it.

you have to do it via the SRS yellow short connector

your indicators are not returning because you havnt pulled the little hub in there out enough to touch the wheel or you havnt lined it up with the wheel.

http://b16a2.kicks-ass.net/tech/S2000-Wheel-029.jpg

CUL8R
25-06-2006, 11:16 PM
ohhhh so yeah i couldnt reset the ecu properly lol. failed lol. will do it again but not sure which fuse to pull out...will read over the diy thread coz i disconnected the battery and pulled the ecu fuse from in the footwell but the lights still on...
u say the hub inside? theres like a white plastic ring inside with two extrusions, is that the one ur talking about. im gonna have another crack tomoz, spewin, i thought it was gonna be an hour job, not thre little 40min blocks lol.

ECU-MAN
25-06-2006, 11:21 PM
yeah that white thing. pull it forwards and lub it a little with crc.

to reset the srs ecu you have to short the yellow srs connector, turn the IGN on to pos II, wait till the srs light goes out, with in 4 sec unplug the connector, then the srs light comes on, then with in 4 seconds plug in the srs short connector then the light goes out and then blinks twice quickly to indicate the srs ecu has been resset.

CUL8R
25-06-2006, 11:47 PM
wow....thanx mate!!! i wanna rep ya but i gotta rep someone else first,thats shambles!!!
dude thank you SO much

sorry the yellow srs connector aint the service connector....its the yellow connector the srs bag connects to yeah?

CUL8R
26-06-2006, 12:05 AM
for the prelude

Solution: Reset the SRS funtion:

1- look underneath dash, near fusebox, for a 2-wire yellow plug, disconnect it and pull it down so you can work with it
2- turn ignition OFF
3- jumper the 2 wires together (cut paperclip in half and straighten, insert one end of both halves into back end of plug where each wire goes in, touch them together and hold)
4- turn ignition ON (SRS light will turn on for 6 seconds, then turn off)
5- within 4 seconds of SRS light turning off, unjumper the 2 wires (SRS light will turn ON)
6- within 4 seconds of SRS light turning on, jumper the 2 wires (SRS light will turn OFF)
7- within 4 seconds of SRS light turning off, jumper the 2 wires (SRS light will blink ON and OFF, indicating SRS function is reset)
