I'll be very wary about using Tein S Techs from eBay USA. You understand that there was and still are sellers marketing fake sTechs. Go to tein.com to find out for yourself.

I dont use EBAY, i got through offical reps dude. I know about fakes, Yes all this voids warranty on the selected area, but CAI can but changed in 30mins or less for service's ;) but springs cant :thumbdwn: depends on personal choice to mod or not.

The cutoff is good.. i'll try to take a picture and post sometime soon.

Worth noting is that the NZ and Malaysian Sport equivelant has HID lighting as standard! ie: The headlight housing is designed to accept Xenon lighting :)

Check the pics below, youll see that its not glary at all and assuming you keep to the 4300k type bulbs itll look factory.

The only things at the moment are the foglights and dark window tint.

Things I have planned are:
1) 18" HP mesh wheels in shadow chrome
2) 1" ~ 1.5" lowering with springs
3) Mugen air filter when it becomes available
4) Mugen exhaust when it becomes available
5) Mugen Kit depending on finances ;)

Its a damn shame there arent many mods available for our cars yet... :(

How much did the HIDs cost?
Haven't had a chance to look, do Civics use projectors or reflectors?

The unit is a reflector type but trust me its not glarey at all... the Japan made model that NZ and Malaysia gets comes with Xenon lights (in the same housing) as standard equipement.

the kit i got was from Xenondepot. goto the 8th gen civic site and lookup the link to the special they currently have.. i think its something like $360usd and this is for a Phillips kit with the new Gen 4 Ballast that is very thin and tiny!

Got the kit online in the US. approx $430Aud shipped.

It adds mid range mostly and retains that original factory look - so if you after sub bass sound then your best going else where...

You get a small amplifier that lets you adjust for gain and cutoff as well as two replacement speakers for the rear deck.

Check the pics in my other post on the bass works kit.

Xenondepot kit is very reliable and the results are very good

in regard to the headlight housing...being a reflector doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be glary...on the other hand, it can be glary too. Just depends how you install your HID and which kit you use.

JDM DC5R also has HID as standard in a reflector housing, but there are people in the USA that has done a projector housing conversion with HID...and the differenece is HUGE!

i was thinking of getting the Xenon Depot HID kit for my civic as well, how do you find the quality of the kit? was it easy to install? how long did they to mail the kit to you?

also which type do i need to get for the 06 civic? is it the H1 or H7 version?

If what you guys say is true about the Malaysian model, I'll definitely be able to get the Malaysian HID kit from the Civic.. I just need to get the bulbs or something right?

Has anyone tried changing the bulbs yet on the Civic (at the front)? It seems rather difficult compared to other cars...

The Xenon Depot kit is the best one on the market and this is the conclusion i came to having spent a month researching on the net.

Installation is easy.. if you know where you want the wiring to go and you know where you can mount the Ballast and ignitor then itll take you 45mins. For me it took 2.5hours and this was to find a spot where i could mount the stuff and do it nice clean and tidy... you couldnt even tell it was running HID gear if you popped the bonnet ;)

Headlight size for the 06 Civic is '9006' and '9005' for the highbeam if your really keen.

The kit took less than a week to arrive and could have been faster if i was home when the courier turned up. ;)

JACE: i wouldnt bother with the OEM kit from the Malaysian model... it may not even fit our cars as the wiring harness would probably also need to connect into the washers which your car wont have. Not to mention that theyll cost a whole heap more even considering how cheap things are in Msia.

Bulb replacement is alittle more fiddly but once youve done it once itll take you a few minutes to do it in the future...

JaCe

I had a look at the manual and doesn't it require you to turn the wheels or something to access the light bulb area? I really wanted brighter lights or HIDs at one stage but at the moment, I'm gonna wait a bit since it seems quite pricey (remember I'm on a not so great income) and I think the money would be better spent on things I'd enjoy more (ie. upgrade front speakers and exhaust).

Btw do you guys know how to get those tiny blue LEDs inside the headlights I've seen on a few cars?

cool, thanx. when installing, did you have to remove the entire headlamp to fit the conversion kit? if you dont mind, could you post a pic showing where u mounted the ballasts?

Theres no need to remove the headlamp.. like i said.. if you know where your putting everything itll only take you 45mins.

Images below - particularly the second image is where i mounted the Ballast.
http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/5941/dsc007249hy.th.jpg (http://img240.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc007249hy.jpg)http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/2994/dsc007275fi.th.jpg (http://img137.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc007275fi.jpg)

The bulb goes into the headlight assembly as you would when replacing the stock bulbs (see the owners manual) The cables from the HID bulbs will then hang down and connect to the ballast and wiring harness.. which you would have mounted below the headlight assembly. These locations are probably the best as if you take a look at your engine bay there are no good mounting positions like the strut towers for example on other cars...

The image below is the Ballast (bottom side of the Gen4 Phillips Ballast)and ignitor (little Black box) mounted on the Right hand side of the car...
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/8531/dsc007306af.th.jpg (http://img137.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc007306af.jpg)

Installing the Kit is very basic.. everything plugs into its own little spot.. you cant get it wrong... you replace the bulbs as you would normally and you earth the wiring harness that you get with the kit and plug it into the battery... the hardest bit is tidying it all up so it looks factory.. so.. if you can imagine that then you know how simple it is. I personally think its one of the best mods you can do considering how often it'll get used.

K&N High Flow Air Panel
Removal of Stock Resonator (3inch Hose Piping to Front of Raditor for Ram-Air Effect)
Mugen Wind Visors
Work Emotion 17inch Rims with Yokohomas ADR-1

Currently Waiting on For:
Progress Rear Sway Bars with Endlinks
Progress Springs

I emailed and spoke to Whiteline and apparently they have no plans to start any development work on the new civic because of 'lack of interest'. Besides, someone has to drive into their Sydney plant and 'donate' the car for R&D.

Most of the parts I have atm are from Japan and Leo (JDM_Concept). I am currently making some enquiries with suppliers in the US because most aftermarkets that fit their Civic Si will fit our 06 Civic. E.g. Sway bars, springs, camber arms.

yes some of the plastic trim can to be removed as its a very tight fit to attach the braces and theirs no way u can do it without removing at least some of the plastic trim in the bonnet. The front piece of plastic where the bonnet lock is HAS to be removed. I also removed the sides plastic bits. Then just re attached them once i was done. Yeah i noticed quite a diff ( some of it mite of been in my head :p ) but the ride just seems stiffer or more rigid. And it doesnt look too bad either! i think civic^^ meant an oiled panel filter vs non oiled
With the K&N filters you apply oil to the filter to help prevent dust from getting through. This can APPARENTLY cause problems with the MAF Sensor. As the filter already comes pre-oiled you just need to make sure that when it comes time to re-oil it you dont over do it and you give the oil sufficient time to migrate.

Have you noticed much difference? if so, what differences

car feels really good and definitely more responsive because i removed the stock resonator. Its shocking to see how air is being routed up and down the front of the engine before being fed thru the airbox.

A slight gain in torque as well as mid-top range. I'm almost getting around 20-40km more out of a full tank.

hope that helps.

nah i don't have any pics of it at the moment coz it's like pitch black and you can't see shit except the sick lights that are on the amps...but i'll take some soon...

just a brief run down though...i attached both of the amps onto the back of the seat and just had the sub sitting in the mid of the boot...the rear speakers just went in the rear speaker spots...so yeah...pretty simple...although 1 amp is as far right as it can be on the back of the seat and the other is more to the middle...i rather have the other one as far left as possible...but none the less it's a pretty decent system! no regrets!

yeh man...the front and the back are the same...reason why i didn't change the front is because at JB the dude told me i already had splits in it and they're quite decent....i'm not sure about the splits part but one thing for sure is it keeps up with the rest of the sound system...so if you're thinking about getting front speakers....i'd say just keep the stock ones (unless you're going to be doing it for competition purposes) but definitely change the backs coz they're just crap...lol...oh yeah...and they're both 17cm...which is 6.5"

so u mean the front stock one get split already, and quite good sound as well? that's great, coz i just thinking if i change the front one to a upgrade one with split, where should i place the split to. so get a pair of good speakers for rear side should be quite enought. other thing is the stock cd player good or just soso, coz base on my experience from car i got b4, change a good cd player can make a huge diff, but due to civic's cd player build into the dash, not easy to do much more about it. just wait and see someone can come out some good idea for that later, cheers

The Epicenter adds extra signal processing to the low frequency bit of the source. Seen as the LC6 only gets the line out the Epicenter will seek out low frequency signals from the source and feed it through to the amp, kinda like a lowpass filter but with alittle intelligence.... in theory im not sure how great itll be but the reviews are promising. Im just not too keen on leaving the filtering to an Amp and the Stock HU has crap adjustibility compared to my last Pioneer headunit (Sub-control/phase/slope etc)

As for the front speakers they DONT have splits. The OS models have them, unfortunately the Local model here misses out. I upgraded my rear's to the Honda Bass Works and whilst its good compared to stock you cant beat having nice clean bass from a decent Sub.

Ive got a pair of Alpine DDLinear's ready to go in the front slots and im trying to figure out a better place than the back of the rear seats to put my 2x 2channel amps.

the car already has a spot for your splits...it's at the very front left and right corner of your dash board....if you can see there are already 2 grills there for splits...yep just get decent rear speakers, a sub and an amp and you're right to go. i didn't change my cd player because it's pretty good...i just used an amp to make it sound louder and better...i think that's all you need to do

yeah, i've installed my system using stock HU
they sounds alright, however still got distortion when the lights on.

for the staging it's really great. i've placed the tweeters on the windscreen.

my current system:
- stock HU with david navone line converter
- Seas lotus splits for the front stage
- tru tech amp for splits
- a/d/s sub 10"
- rockford 500s for the sub

anyone got the same problem as me?solution?

planning to change the splits, coz it doesn't really match my system.

They told me that too. They're wrong.

There are definitely NO tweeters, and the stock speakers are some crap made in Thailand. That being said, for stock speakers in this price range, the speakers are pretty decent- it's only when you listen to premium speakers (or even half decent splits) that you'll notice the difference. I think as someone else pointed out, it's the bass which is really lacking in the car.

That spot doesn't fit every tweeter- mine melted last Friday and fell out (landing near my accelerator pedal!) so I had to get it plastic welded in. It's a good place if you want to keep your car looking stock, but I heard that if you put it on A pillars, it'll create a much better sound stage- but also attract alot more attention.

As for mods- I've ordered a few parts... grille, chrome light surrounds and visors. Shall post pics once installed.

LOL I kept the ideas/plans under wraps for now.. it's not going to do much performance wise, but they looked pretty good in the pics.

Ordered parts from a singaporean guy- not sure how good he is so we'll wait and see. Shall post pics once installed.

Btw to answer your Q about the price, the grill was very very cheap... but that was due to me ordering a few parts. Only concern is he wants payment in USD via Paypal.

As for the 150w splits- just remember watts aren't everything. I think my MBQ are rated 50w-120w. If they sound good to you, then that's what matters.

bangers178
22-10-2006, 12:36 PM
in the civic there are diffinitly speakers in the a pillar but the not actually called 'splits' because there not running via a crossover. the sound setup in the civic is very much like the accord euro witht the a pillar speakers. 'A Pillar' position is normally aim at a higher quaility sound distrubtion as the sound will reflect ofthe window and the high feq. are therefore in a better position raher tthan the normal position on the side of the door.
i bought half of my system already and will be doing a minor custom job.
i have already bought

MB Quart RVF 216 and will be running them off,
RockFord T3002 amp
x2 JL Audio 12W6v2-D4 and will be powered by
RockFord T5001 amp

i still haven't bought a head unit yet becasue goin overseas and can't afford it yet. im thinking to leave the stock sytem and install the head unit in one the the compartments in front of the gear knob so i can hide it better.

chylld
22-10-2006, 12:49 PM
in the civic there are diffinitly speakers in the a pillar

this is incorrect; the vti, vti-l and sport models only come with 6.5" woofers in the front doors and 6.5" woofers in the rear parcel shelf. the tweeter receptacles at the base of the a-pillars are not occupied in the australian versions (but they are in overseas versions).

dyljoy
22-10-2006, 01:32 PM
so u mean in our ver, pillars got nth in it, right? so can we put the splits in it? and do u think we need change both of stock speakers which locate at front and rear? as i know, to improve the sound quailty, replace a speaker with crossover in front is good. how about rear? should we change it with speaker with crossover as well, or use speaker without crossover just enough, coz don't know where can i place the crossover in the back

chylld
22-10-2006, 01:49 PM
well first let's clear up what everything's called. a set of splits (more commonly referred to as just "splits" or "components") typically consists of a woofer (~6.5" diameter speaker), a tweeter (~1" diameter speaker) and a crossover. the crossover takes the signal from the HU/amplifier and sends high-frequency music to the tweeter, and low-mid-frequency music to the woofer.

also in the 06 civic, there is no provision for the tweeters in the a-pillars; the tweeter receptacle is located at the corners of the dash (the horizontal bit, not the vertical bit).

to answer your questions: in the australian version, yes there is nothing in the tweeter receptacles on the dash. so you can put tweeters there if you wish (not splits, as that would imply putting a tweeter, a woofer and a crossover in that tiny little space!)

you can change both front and rear if you want, however for sound quality reasons it is much better to concentrate on the front only (some pro sq competitors delete the rear speakers completely - after all when was the last time you went to a concert with the band behind you??)

the fronts would benefit most from upgrading the stock woofer to a splits setup, e.g. with the new woofer in the place of the old one, the tweeter in the stock location on the dash and the crossover somewhere where it won't get wet.

the rears (if you really must upgrade them) can be either upgraded woofers, coaxials or splits/components.

i would highly advise against getting a set of splits without a crossover - these are typically budget systems that use simple methods like inline capacitors to filter lower frequencies from the tweeters, and will add colouration to the music as well as limit the tuneability.

Haha I don't wanna make a new thread until I've finished my grille. Need to get it painted before install. It's easy to install though... pulled apart the front of my Civic today and it's really easy to fit.

As for pics of the lamp covers/visors;

Nah I'm in Sydney mate.

The grille is going to be changed a bit... bought a cheap replica with a crappy mesh (which I also cut myself on ><!). Need to get it sanded down, sprayed, and then install a nicer looking mesh. Hopefully will finish within a few wks- but have uni exams coming up in a fortnight.

Look for international sellers and sometimes they can arrange shipping to Australia.

Does anyone here have any thoughts on the K&N air filter for the Civic 1.8? There's a sale going on in Singapore atm with each for under $80aud (maybe $10-15 for shipping?)... debating whether or not it's worth it.

EDIT: I'm not sure if I'm allowed to disclose the sellers here because they are based in Singapore... the guy previously wanted to sell on OzHonda but was rejected.

i have no idea what they cost if you buy them here from autobarn or something like that...but that sounds like a reasonable price...not sure how long it will take to ship over though...my friend told me the filters are like 100 bucks...but when you find out the right price...let me know coz i want one as well!! haha

Apparently the retail price is around $140sgd (120aud?)... i might just get my cousin to order for me and see how it goes whether or not I want to install. I guess if I don't want to use it I can always sell on OH :)

you can buy the K&N filter in oz for $100
the Filter replacement showed no power gains in the R18, but it does sound like it's breathing better.

I generally always recommend k&n filters wether there's a power gain or not, but if what you're looking for is more kick, go with a CAI.

i think you have to find out the size and shape of it....and then you can order it on the K&N site? i think....or i'm pretty sure just go to autobarn...i think they should sell it...

aussiebuddha
30-10-2006, 04:47 PM
get the number from the K&N website first.
then go to autobarn, supercheap or one of those, and ask them to get it for you.
The main distributor for K&N in australia is rocket industries.

Regarding the CAI
CAI as in Cold Air Intake.
It replaces the whole intake for a pipe that goes all the way to get air from the "outside" of the car and not the engine bay thus colder air means more oxygen and better combustion.

ppl generally gain an average of 5kw with a well designed CAI

For the civic 06 r18 there's 3 brand making CAIs
AEM (good brand but stuffed up on the 06 model, gives CELs, stalls, etc)
Injen (great brand, works great)
Fujita (works great as well)

Cheers

dyljoy

No, u can put HID on high beam side as well. coz our civic's low and hi locate spearatly, so u should put two HID to replace both of them, otherwise, u just can put one of each, and normaly ppl just replace the always using one --- low beam, hoho. if u want save $$, just replace a normal but super white color bulb from Hi beam side, then ur light color will be nice and match a bit than standard one

I spoke to the people at honda and they say if you install HID then the warranty doesn't cover anything (VOIDED) that has been caused by the installation of the HID lights... (basically like electrical problems) but the warranty is still good for all the other stuff that has NOTHING to do with the installation of the HID lights.

I spoke to the people at honda and they say if you install HID then the warranty doesn't cover anything (VOIDED) that has been caused by the installation of the HID lights... (basically like electrical problems) but the warranty is still good for all the other stuff that has NOTHING to do with the installation of the HID lights.

wooo.... that's not good... anyway, what are the "stuff that have something to do with the installation" besides the light?

omg... so when u sed "fried electricals" does it means when, say... the Air Con/Speedo/Audio doesnt work... then Honda can say,"sorry there are no warranty for it because you have installed the HID"

ahahhaa, lol i get what you sed now... :p anyway, I'm planning to change the inside car light as well as the boot with white/light blue LED. You think they're available from Autobarn or Supercheapauto?

I dont work at any of those places...so im 100% sure, but they do have alot of useful stuff there. You just gotta be creative and apply it to your own car. =]
Ask people who work there, most of the time they're friendly and helpful.

There's no definitive yes/no answer (at least from a legal perspective) but chances are, if you came up with some hugely expensive/lengthy/time consuming problem, then they'll use that line on you so that they aren't liable to help you fix it (at least not for free)- but I'm inclined to think that for the sake of upholding their reputation, they'll help you out provided it's not unreasonable. This is of course subjective.

Finally got my grille installed (I know I'm slow jo_e) and noticed there's a huge gap between the top and the bonnet.

But after reviewing the official mugen grille in JDM Concept, it's apparent there's a gap there too. Only difference is it's painted black (whereas rest of grille matches car colour) so it's not so obvious;

PS: To install this grill, do u need to take off the front bumper?

Jo_e

No. You dont need to take off the front bumper, but you do need a extremely small phillips screwdriver to take off the honda grille. There are 2 screws which cannot be reached with a normal sized Phillip head screwdriver.

Not sure if this is a silly question or not, but here goes :P

Is there a different back bumper bar besides the original Honda one?

JaCe - How long did the ordering/deilvery take for your grille? Looks nice buddy, you've convienced me to wanting to get one :)

I know you guys say it's easy to install, but is that easy for people who are familar with car maintainence? I've only lifted the bonnet of the car and nothing else :P

I think it might look better as it is? Kinda takes away the effect if you blend it in by painting it black. Thats what I think anyways :)

I'm in Malaysia atm and have seen a lot of cars with modified grille- by painting it same colour as car and letting it blend in, it looks VERY VERY SPORTY (refer to the official mugen civic pictures and you'll see what i mean). The main reason I didn't paint it yet is because I'm looking at other grilles here in Malaysia/Singapore for the Civic.

As for installation, took me a very long time because of stupid complications;
eg. Didn't have a small enough screwdriver to fit in hole, couldn't get the pop-screw (not sure what proper term is; but they are the screws which Honda uses which don't need a screwdriver to be removed), etc...

If you're lucky you could probably do it in <30mins, but for me, I couldn't get the pop screws to come out. Some ppl just damage the screws on purpose because it's easier and you won't be using them again after switching grille anyway, but I wanted to be able to install my original Honda grille in perfect condition so I did it without damaging the screws but taking a whole lot more effort (Note of irony: I did it without damaging the screw, only for 2 of them to fall down and get lost somewhere in the bay...)

Also note- this was my first time opening up my car. Quite daunting actually. I've never been any good at DIY stuff either.

Warning about the grille: with the parts you get with it, it's not very strong at the bottom (at least not in my replica grille). There's a hole for you to affix a screw at the bottom to the bumper (using the original Honda grille's slot) but you need to use your own screw and I haven't gotten round to doing that since I came overseas. I think that will make it very stable- if you live nearby (Sydney) then you're more than welcome to check it out whenever we're both free.

As for delivery and so on... took less than a fortnight from the time I transferred money via Paypal. Quality is alright, but probably not as good as original Mugen part.

Hope this helps
jeff.
ps. Jo_E also has this grille installed on his car, but his is colour-coded so it looks very good. He also installed his own mesh.

EDIT: Forgot answer your question about the rear bumper bar... in the Mugen/Modulo kits, it's just an underspoiler. Have yet to see any aftermarket ones here in Singapore/Malaysia- just a lot of Mugen kits.

Btw just to add something (this connection very slow so can't be bothered waiting for edit); the difficult bit is removing the SILVER CHROME section (with the huge H badge) from the car because of the upside down pop-screws. If you removed the bumper, I'd imagine this job would be CONSIDERABLY EASIER since the screws could be upright... or you'd be able to see them at least.

LOL...some people...meaning me aye? well, just for ur info, i put back the original grille without a problem even without the screws coz its held on by the top bumper guard. I found there are alot of unesscary parts in the civic...not to say to remove everything, but yeh..EVEN if you break the screws you can get new ones from honda :D as you have done.

Btw, please return the small screwdriver i lent you asap. Gf'z dad needs it back =P

LOL. I wonder if those 4 screws help keep it from rattlin at highe speeds? I wouldn't be surprised if it might be related to the structural rigidity (ie. safety!) of the car... *shrugs*

As for screwdriver- sorry forgot to give it back before I left. Will return it on Monday (when I get back) if you're around.

1. That's a replica kit which is prob why not clip on so easily? I'm basing this on the missing Mugen badge off the rear wing on the right. There are A LOT of Mugen Civics here and I'd say around 50:50 are original:replica.
2. Just FYI, Civic FD1 Mugen Kit (official, painted, shipped from Japan) incl. front underspoiler, rear under, side skirts and rear wing costs $3800sgd + approx $700sgd shipping to Australia; which equates to $4500sgd (according to XE.com, around $3711aud).
3. The gauges look stupid IMO. All he's done is duplicate everything else; and IIRC, there's no manual model offered here in Singapore so why bother with all the guages? Also note that (upon closer inspection), that's the 2.0L with paddle shift.

hey Jo_e, some Q's about install the front grill, do i need some double tape to stable the grill's bottom? or just stable by original upper clips?

Well you dont really need double sided tape coz im not a big fan of tape on cars. You can if you want but the original upper clips should be fine just to hold it in. If you realli realli love the grille and never wanna replace it ever agen and want to stabilize it permanently use acralite or how ever you spell it.
Just double sided tape tends to melt in the oz sun esp in summer.

PS. SG *** Styling parts...not recommended. Their goods are somewat dodgy imo. You will most likely find a huge gap between the bonnet and the grille and that the grille will not be a perfect fit. Tell us how it goes. =]

Hmm... asked ppl around me and noone can figure out what that LCD is showing. Any ideas?

I still think that the RPM on the right is unnecessary.

As for grille.. you need to double side tape it for sure. I used masking tape as planning to use the screw to secure it. The upper clips won't be enough.
