Hi all, first post. So hi. heh.

I drive a 1988 honda accord coupe hatch (oh what the hell, have a pic)
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/master_scythe/car/IMG_0648.jpg
Now this thing has done 350k kms, so as you can imagine, it smokes at startup.

We have been recommended to run pure 50 grade oil (for older engines) in it to stop it smoking while i pull the last few KM's out of it.

Now my question is, When it finally goes, what engines can i swap out?

I want to convert this to Auto anyway (im a city driver and although manual is very fun driving the suburbs, it does become tiresome in the city) so while im doing that i may as well pull the whole engine.

What can i swap in there without modification?

Also, Besides 50 weight oil, are there any other secrets to stop this from smoking?

If theres hints tips or help you learnt the hard way about ANYTHING to do with this car, please just tell me that too. I need to learn as much as posisble.

Thanking you in advance.

Scythe.

hmmm.....very very difficult to answer really....because i would say that maybe less than 1% of the members here know anything about ur car.

Firstly, is your car carbueretter or EFI? My guess is its carbi, hence if you plan on putting a more powerful/newish engine in, then get a carbi to efi conversion. (search for this).

Next you ened to decide what engine. Power? Daily? I'm sure you can pick up a cheap 2nd hand oldskool EFI engine from a 90s accord without much hassle. BUT you will have to rebuild your car 'around' this engine. I.e. axles, mounts, suspension (weight diff) so forth so on. Hence costing you more money. Also premade parts for conversion might not be available requiring fabrication (more $$$)

Then, in terms of transmission, good luck. finding a good condition auto box and all the fixtures and fittings might be a task in itself! (let alone the box being in good condition - might need recondition. $$$$) . nonetheless, it can be done.

So all in all, its more trouble than its worth, unless you have like $5K to spend on a car thats worth less to everyone else, but worth heaps to you only. So good luck for resale as well.

To be honest, ditch it and get a early 90s accord. Most are auto, some have sunrooves, EFI already, great car, looks nice and goes hard-ish.

OR just sell this and buy the same model in Auto with less K's.

In the end you have to weigh up whether its worth splashing that much money on a car that has absolutely no resale OR buy a car that is newer and already has all these features (similiar cost + 2K maybe)

Its EFI.

Yeah. well i just changed form 25-60 to straight 50 grade non synthetic oil, so HOPEFULLY that will stop the smoke while i save up for a new car.

hmm.... thats about all really.

If you have any comments, leave em, if not. thanks eh. Ill keep my wallet closed and my nose to the grindstone and get some cash

A20A3 & A20A4:
The A20A3 and A20A4 were the fuel injected versions of the A20A engines. They were run by Honda's PGM-FI system on a partial OBD-0 computer. Again, there is no real difference between the A20A3 and the A20A4 besides the A20A4 having a slightly higher power output because of not having emissions components (hp and tq numbers for A20A3 only). The A20A3 was offered in the 1984-1987 Honda Prelude 2.0Si, the 1985 and 1989 Honda Accord SE-i, and the 1986-1989 Honda Accord LX-i.

Specifications

PGM-FI
Displacement: 1956 cm³
Bore:
Stroke:
Power:
1986-1987: 110 hp @ 5500 rpm & 114 ft/lb @ 4500 rpm
1988-1989: 120 hp @ 5500 rpm & 122 ft/lb @ 4000 rpm

they got potential... hehe pzzz
