View Full Version : Guages in a DC2 without rice

Hi All,
I need a new Tacho and Oil pressure guaue in my DC2 (haven't decided which one yet, but the Gekko ones look nice). However, I don't want it mounted like a local farmers market.
Anyone have pics of guages mounted tastefully in a teg? I definately dont want an A-Pillar mount. I was planning to mount the Tacho to the right of the clutster (for best visiblility without obstructing my view).
Another option for me could be, is there a LCD type display which can tell me oil temp, oil pressure, water temp? (I still would want the actual tacho). I'm getting APEXi Power FC is there maybe an incar type unit for it?
Thanks

no a-pillar setup?
imo 2 tasteful alternatives are the center mounted gauge holder which can hold three of them...as seen in BADHBT's car. It goes in front of the clock in the middle of the dash.
the other way is with a replacement cluster for your gauges which has 2 spots for 2" gauges..one on each side, but towards the steering wheel
i'll try and find pics..i think some traders here sell em tho...

Mr crews would be a bit distracting, if you wanted to look at them when you driving, cos there pretty low down. The other setup would be more practical. However, they look pretty good!

What gauge would be useful to install in a NA car like teg and why?? Some looks really nice, especially those Defis but what can they do cause they are really expensive?
If it shows the temp goes up or low oil preasure, slow down or something??

Defi is probably one of the best aftermarket gauges out there in terms of quality and accuracy -> this is reflected in their price. I'm not saying the more expensive the gauge the better...i'm simply saying a quality product commands a quality price.
Gauges are all about reading data - accuracy is therefore critical.
It would be a fair assumption to say that a $40 gauge is not going to be as accurate as the Defi/Pivot range. I think most will agree.
IMO i think for NA cars oil temp/pressure are the most useful. As cars already come with water temp/rev there is no need for these. Boost is out of the question with NA... air/fuel might be handy..but i guess maybe if u have done mods that will affect it.
***On a side note, i managed to pick up one of the aforementioned gauge clusters. $30 ! ^_^***

of course it is legal!
it is an excellent set-up, you need to use a dremel to enlarge the holes though, so it is a permenant modification :(

iw ill when i have it installed with gauges
atm i am having problems trying to decide what to get.
Autometer NEXUS? Defi? Pivot? Or go for the cheaper options of AUTOGAUGE?
going for Oil pressure/oil temp.
for random info -> the gauge holders in the one i bought is 52mm (2inch).

Hey guys, I've got one of those gauge holder thingys for the bezel. Its pretty good IMHO, only complaint would be that I only know when the petrol tanks less than half full and the water temp is above normal temperature. Other than that I love it.

Yay thanks a lot Qball, yup that's what they look like. Like I said, you can see how it blocks the water temp and fuel level gauges a bit but as long as ya know when its empty and when the water temp is too high, its all good.

It blocks the dash meters.... I dont like that....
IMO i think for NA cars oil temp/pressure are the most useful.
Well, the info is useful, but then again what can we do with it?
I am into ICE, so a volt meter would be good for me. What can I do with the volt meter info? Well for one thing I know my battery is charging properly, a voltage of 13 or more is good for the car and sound system. The higher the voltage, the more power my amps will produce.
AFR meter, can tweak with the settings, but if stock car, it would be pretty much useless....
Oil temp/preasure.... if its high, then something faulty, better stop. Is that it? Or there is something else I can do with the info?

yeah i liked the idea and was interested but i could figure out how it fitted without covering...now that i see, no offence to anyone who has it, wants it, or is ordering one tomoro, each to there own but i dont like how it covers the cluster
anyone else got some neat ways to display some guages???
is there any other brand other than defi that make the din guages, or sell a mount for that use???
defi are so expensive and honestly i cant justify the $$$

Thats exactly the reason.
Stock sensors don't tell you anything. You can easily be driving with low oil pressure and 400+C temp, without knowing it. Next thing to happen will be a blown bottom end. When you know this info, you stop and see your sump plug got ripped off when you went off the last speed bump and you lost all your oil. $40 for 5L of Motul, new $3 sump plug and you're running again. No (NON rice) guages, and you'll be PMing Adrian asking for some new high compression TODA pistons. See the difference?
I think it's rice when you don't know why you have the guage (ie. couple of my mates).

Hmmm..... dont the original oil preasure light tells you something about the low oil preasure?
There is no oil tempreture but the engine tempreture should be sufficient, or not??
I am trying to find some justification to spend some hard earn cash on some defi meters....
Icegroove

maybe get the gauge to monitor the pressure consistently...so before the light comes on you know whats happening...could be too late by then.
im not sure..just a thought.
I've been thinking myself about brands and that of gauges.
Ok, yes, you want them to be accurate...defi/pivot provide this at a high level. IMO -> the accuracy is so precise where say, on track, that is critical.
But for simple street use (and at a significantly fraction of the price) i think some discrepency can be allowed. I mean Autometer is well known for their gauges/accuracy and are not that $$$.
So I guess the question is - are you willing to fork out a small fortune for track-necessary accuracy? or settle for (slight) inaccuracy but pay smaller portion of the price?
I think gauges are useful - but some people get it more for looks. I'll be honest they do look cool i'm sure you'll agree. But if your car is only ever on the street - why pay upwards of almost $500 for gauges?
Ultimately, you earn the money - you buy the parts. It is, after all your own car. :)
end rant yo!

I'd have to agree that the inaccuracy among the "non race" gauges will be so little that it wouldn't make a difference to a road car. For example, Oil temp or water temp, a 5 degree difference ain't gonna be a life or death situation and even some of the Taiwanese gauge brands are reaching high levels of accuracy tested against Microtech Handsets.

if you buy a generic branded one from ebay or the $2 shop it blocks the stock gauges.
the ones availible from rocket industries look like this and do not block the gauges, it should look like this http://www.superhonda.com/photopost/data/504/medium/DSC00041.JPG
