indash squeeking

theres some high pitched squeeking..mores more like metal on metal and this is just behind the cd player

more noticeable squeeking when the car vibrates morer

has anyone else have this problem?

I would partially dismantle the dash - as much as you can, and do some grabbing, pulling, thumping here and there to identify the source of the sound.

For instance, remove the stereo and cluster assembly (easy to do) and jiggle the metal frames, wiggle the glove box, ensure screws are tight, gently pull the cabling to trigger the sound etc.. If it only happens when driving, get a friend to sit in the passenger seat and listen for the sound source.



But first be sure its coming from the dash, sometimes a sound from the rear or center can ricochet around the cabin and fool your ears - like the clunking sound I currently have with my Euro, i.e. moving my head around the cabin makes the sound come from another direction.

hey hiko,

Just to reiterate Eurodude's point,

A sound coming from behind the dash/cdplayer/air vents can be anything from the engine bay area.

When i had a new exhaust system done, a squeak developed, and it sounded like its coming out of the dash. It was the flex pipe, which made the metal squeaky noise. I couldnt hear it from the engine bay, but heard it from under the car.

Might be wise to spend a bit of time just finding out roughly where its from (engine bay, front suspension, etc), might save you an arvo of opening the dash

i still dont have the time to check it this week
but i had a look around the dash and couldnt find a screw or anything similar

maybe i could use a flat head screw driver to lift up the sides?

i've learnt to live with all my noises now
my car use to have rattles like crazy
fixed it all up
now its like i got 5 new ones
it never ends...
mines got a new one when ever i brake or take off the dash creaks on the passenger side...
should check it out but cant b bothered anymore...

how did it go hiko?

For owners with old cars 5+ years old, its natural for little squeaks to develop, since bolts will get loose etc. If you're handy or keen to take stuff apart to retighten etc, go for it.

Otherwise if its just a small niggle you can wait for the next service and point em out. Usually its just something slightly loose or worn, and if its hard to get to they'll give you the 'meh' look :p

i opened the glove box and looked inside and there 2 bolts that were holding onto the air bag tube were gone..so the screw was scraping the pole that it was suppose to be bolted on.
so i fit a new nut in there dead tight at its fine..

You should use some LocTite on the screw threads to keep them in place.

Ive also found that bluetach works wonders between metal->metal locations such as the rear parcel shelf.

great suggestion there Eurodude,
the parcel shelf isnt sitting tight enough so whenever i go through a bumpy road or speed hump it would either unflip itself or it would make a vibrating sound like a mobile.
