I think a good start would be a new head unit first, UNLESS the front speakers have totally crapped them selves.. but then i would still get a new headunit.
Then get some nice decent splits up front.
Then get a 2 channel amp to amp up those splits
Then get a sub and a monoblock for bass.

Also what model is the crx?
Got a Budget?
Do u just want better than stock? Or after anything? loudness? Sound quality?

Its a 93 model crx,for the headunit id pay about $500-600 but all in all i want good sound Im not to fussed with loudness dont want to go deaf anytime soon more so the quality .It wont be entering no sound competitions lol
but yea at the moment I have 2 speakers that dont work at all and one of them hisses quite loudly I dunno whats happened there ? so its prob best to change the speakers to start of with than headunit, but Im totally clueless on car audio and dunno what speakers are needed what brands are very good or to stay away from etc any help appreciated thx guys

Dont get Sony, they are terrible. Ive had many Sony speakers and they all sucked, most of them are broken.

The rear speakers should be 6x9's, and 6" at the front (not 100% sure though)

Kenwood, Cerwin Vega, and Pioneer are decent speakers.

oh if the car has only fronts and thats it, even better, because you don't need rears anyway.

Well First off get some really nice decent splits, considering you are willing to pay 500-600 for headunit, i would say 400 on the splits would do nicely.

I wouldn't recommend kenwood or pioneer, unless you go for the top spec.
Either Alpine, Hertz, Focal, Boston Acoustics, MB quart

If you aren't willing to spend alot on those splits, Jaycar Response 6.5 splits would do nicely, they sound like speakers( better than most mainstream ie/ pioneer double its price IMO and have heard the same response with other people) and are very nice. $150.

Then get a good 2 channel amp to amp up those splits and get some sound deadening for those speakers and should sound nice a bassy.

Just stay away from Sony Speakers, and amps, but headunits are okay and do the job, nothing wrong with them, but features lack.

For headunit: Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Eclipse

Splits/speakers: Hertz, Focal, MB Quart, Boston Acoustic

Amp: Most amps are pretty good most brands are fairly decent, ( not BOSS or whatever) or but if you are going to use decent speakers i say go that step futhur and get an Audison SRX2.

You could get the headunit at JB hifi, would be cheaper, if your going to go for Pioneer...
But again we need a budget, cause i could recommend splits which are worth $1000.
ie/ need to know: overall budget, willing to spend on entire system, also who is going to do install you? friends? cause installation would also count into cost... for pro finish, unlike JB and stratty

i fink change head unit first
then change the speakers

depending on how quickly u want the system
i mean new speakers on ur stock deck wont make much difference..

hmmm $1200 aint much in car audio. maybe do ur system in steps?? to ensure each part is quality, instead of lots of cheap gear at once.

id do:

step 1:
HU
splits
amp for splits/speakers
SD'ing
installation
all that would take up most of $1200

then in stage 2 id add:
sub
sub amp
box
wiring
more SD'ing if required
installation if required

lots of car audio specialists around melb with good gear AND can provide top installation - unlike jb/strathy,etc. hektik, tower, freeway, stylyn. watevas closest to u

I have my doubts you could get all that (using decent components) for $1200... even when I went to JB/Stratty, they quoted me $700-$800 for a subwoofer/amp fully installed. I'm pretty sure the combined cost of amp/splits would be comparable to the Pioneer sub/amp I was interested in, throw in a nice HU and I think the budget is being pushed.

I know my opinion isn't that valuable but I'd say go the route of the sub first- no point adding splits in without a sub because it sounds really shrill and horrible without the bass. That could just be in my experience, but the sound improvement for me was considerably better with adding a sub rather than replacing speakers.

EDIT: I just remembered.. isn't Melbourne supposedly cheaper (for labour and buying stuff) than Sydney?.. in which case maybe it will be do-able. I also forgot to take into account that if you're on a tight budget, you probably won't be springing for a flashy HU or amp.

yeah installation is usually alot, but if u know what you are doing, saves u heaps, i got a sub and amp combo, and i did it for 250 bucks, was using good brands as well RF sub and JVC amp,(even if i was to use BOSS, i would be over 250) just depends...if you shop around, wait for sales, then u will save up alot.

BUT i say do it the first time right, get what you want and save that extra for something good.

Now im in that position...not loud enough for me.. so im gonna go for DD2512 with a Jaycar mono or 2xDD1012, not sure which one, but then again i say save up for that extra and do it in steps rather then go full out.

Btw I wanted to add if the guy is goin for quality over just loudness, also should consider going to specialty audio stores as opposed to the usual breed of JB and Stratty. When looking at the specs, keep in mind that they may seem low, but they sound fantastic- ie. very efficient. Even my RF (rockford fosgate since I don't think you will know it and noone else mentioned it) amp claimed to only have 50w RMS per channel- but in the birth sheet it was very understated because the real power output was 98w RMS per channel.

One more thing... also recommend you try before you buy because even amongst the premium speakers, they exhibit different characteristics.

EDIT: Forgot to ask, do you have a sub? If not, you might wanna consider that before adding good quality splits because I was going to get splits until I heard them without a sub (it's way too shrill and painful to listen to)- and if you're looking for an amp, I'm not sure about other brands but from what I gather the RF features something not too common- remote EQ. That is, from my drivers seat I can adjust the knob to vary the "Punch Bass EQ" to make the bass softer or louder- it's quite useful to have; but then I guess if you're gonna change your deck (mine is stock) then maybe it's not so important.
