Looks a bit large. Would you still be able to close the bonnet?

i dont think (especially in our stock daily driven cars) this type of gauge is needed at all ~ considering the coolant temp. in the block is the most important and the sensors there are already accurate enough?

It's for the under-bonnet bling factor.
I really wouldn't know why a standard car would need one of those, but I guess they would look sorta cool.
