anyone have any ideas to help a troubled brother out?

not sure but maybe low clutch fluid not allowing clutch to fully disengage, perhaps cause by leaking clutch master cylinder?

your syncros may be stuffed for 5th and reverse gear. dont quote me on this but i had a similar problem. In my case it either wouldnt go in reserve or once u forced it in with excessive strength then it was almost impossible to get out again hehehe

Yes I think that is possible, especially if you're in the habit of changing from 2nd to 5th regularly, skipping 3rd & 4th, as it wears 5th & reverse gear synchro. Correct me if I'm wrong.

my opinion is, it has a wrong grade of gearbox oil in it. Was test driving my mate's DC2R which sometimes had issues getting out of gears. (he had a new clutch put in as well). Asked my mechanic who advise it might be the wrong gearbox oil in it. But then, it's only a suggestion.

if u cant put the gear in reverse the first time..try letting go of the clutch and then pump the clutch a few times and they try selecting the gear back in reverse...that helps alot

The part about difficulty getting out of reverse is more worrying. Have you tried getting out of reverse with the car off? You should be able to pull it out with or without using the clutch.

try changing your gearbox oil and topping up clutch oil... i've had a similar problem before and this improved it a bit. putting automatic oil in gearbox also helps

5th and reverse synchros will set up back about $500-$600ish. However i am no mechanic but thats how much i was quoted.

Good suggestion as per ppls comments is to change your gearbox oil.
I get my car serviced by Honda, so i am assuming they would place in Honda oil.

Synchro costs are not to expensive...its the labour to replace them that is the killer.

If your mechanic is trustworthy...maybe let them take ur ride for spin.
I'm sure they will have a better idea after that

just a thought.

DC2R's have always been a bit tough to get into first and reverse....If you cant find it, grind it!
