hi all, just wondering what motor oil you are running in your vti-r's or type r's? just use honda oil or something else? and do you use 10w30 or go for something thicker in the summer heat? in north america, the dealers dont even use honda oil, just whatever they can get for cheap from their supplier. scary thought, eh? is it different here in aus?
cheers

I use either: Castrol R sythetic 5w30, Shell Helix 5w40 or about to try the Mobil 1 10w30. Never tried honda oil. Used to use the old 5w50 mobil one yeras ago, before 10w30 became more readily available. Usually the castrol, and shell is much cheaper than the mobil 1. the mobile 1 10w30 is double the price!

and I usually change oil at home, unless I'm getting a bigger service done at my cousins. I'm just about to try this new oil flush concentrate so will leave the oil for 10K this time instead of 5K

thanks for the replies. im not looking to cheap out, i am thinking that a 15w40 or 20w50 might be better in the summer because of the high temperatures. id prefer to stick with a dino oil though, not synthetic. dont want to deal with oil leaks and such if it cleans too much gunk out. the owners manual suggests thest thicker grades are suitable at summer temps, just wondering what you all are using. it is a vtec motor and i want to keep her happy spinning to 8200rpm :)

Just to let you know why certain synthetics are cheaper. There are 3 types.

Hydrocracked - These are mineral oils that are broken down to give the desired molecule size so that you can have the viscosity you want. As smooth as "real" synthetic but when put under extreme heat and pressure (i.e. track racing), they start to lose viscosity because the molecules break to smaller length chains. Castrol Formula R and Edge 5w-30 fall into this category.

Polyalphaolefins (PAO) - These oils are made from the natural gas part by linking molecules together to make a longer one. Good protection and will withstand extreme conditions. But..... they don't leave a thick layer on metals, so when you start your cold engine, there is a little more wear. Expensive synthetics fall into this category, Mobil 1 gold, Shell Helix Ultra, Motul Turbolight, Castrol Formula R and Edge 0w-40.

Double ester - These are made from esters. The long chain ester are coiled when cold, and stretched when warm. Longer molecules = better protection. These oils also tend to stick to metal, so overnight, they will still protect your engine when you start in the morning. The downside is that they are very expensive. An example is Motul 300V.

Honda oil is mineral oil, made by Caltex.

For me, I use hydrocracked, because by the 6 month service interval, the oil should be ready for changing. It is priced just in between mineral and PAO oils, so not too hard on the wallet.

Using penzoil semi synthetic 10w-30 and i drive my teg pretty hard on a regular basis and so far no problems after a year of using this oil.

My mechanic reccomended this oil and he only deals with modified cars so it must be one of the good ones. I for one am happy with it.

Stick to 10w-30 or at most 1 step up to 10w-40. Don't go anymore. For summer, you don't need an oil thicker than 10w-40 in a Type R.

I use the cheapest Motul 10w-40 oil for my DC2R and change every 5000 km.

Would a 0w-40 or 5w-40 offer better cold start up protection? If so, wouldnt it be a better choice than a 10w-40 or is their something I am missing?

10w will protect down to -20ºC. So I'd only use 10w it down to -10ºC just to be safe. So if you live in the mountains where it is that cold during winter, I'd put in 0w or 5w instead.

That 0w, 5w and 10w denotes viscosity at -18C. If you are in the city area, there is not much difference. If you really want cold start protection, go for a semi-synthetic, hydrocracked synthetic or an ester oil. PAO synthetics like Mobil1 don't seem to like to leave a film on the metal surfaces if left overnight.

If at sea level where you only see down to 0ºC temperature, you can use 0w, 5w or 10w.

Would Motul 8100 5w-40 be a good choice?

Yeah, motul 8100 5w-40 is good. If you were using FEO 10w-30 before switching to 8100, then you might feel more resistance due to the viscosity increase.

Motul will have that one I think its called turbolite

P.S the lower the first number is the better it protects on cold starts, so why not get the 5w-40?

Maybe his engine is very loose (piston ring-wall clearance too large) and needs thicker oil at startup....

A 5w-40 compared to a 15w-40 oil is the same at operating temperature. The only difference is when it is cold. So it should burn just like your current oil. You could try 5w-50 like the silver Mobil1 oil.

Otherwise you could top up your oil.

Try one of the Lucus oil stabiliser, that worked for me when my old car was burning oil, you can play with the winding wheel while your there also! it looks cool!

But yeah like aaronng said thicker oil might be the go. Sometimes different oil brands make a difference. Mobile 1 has a tendency to burn more, do a search on honda-tech.com

Or STOP vtecing all the time! I note b series engine have a tendency to use more oil when always vtecing

Does the Lucas oil stabiliser gum up when it is burnt? I tried the wheel thingy, and damn it looks so gummy, like nose snot.
