Hi Guys,
The Auto trans on my Rover 416i/Integra 86 shudders when stopped with my foot on the brake in DRIVE, if i put the car in NEUTRAL it stops. I think it is the torque converter playing up. The thing is though, after a long trip it stops altogether for a few days, and the problem is intermittent. The car drives fine otherwise. Does anyone know if a good service will fix the problem or if or should just put up with it.
Cheers

hey there... you sure it isn't just idling really low making it shudder? and putting it in neutral allows it to idle a bit faster/smoother? maybe the idle motor needs looking at... and does it shudder, or shudder worse, when you turn a/c on?

just a thought

I'm no mechanic but I'd check out the simple things first, such as trans oil fluid level, engine mounts, etc. Idle is certainly something to look at too.

We all know that automajics are temperamental and stupid.

Thanks guys,
I thought it may have been to do with it idling too low ,but if so, I can't understand why often after a long trip it stops shuddering for a while, and sometimes I drive it and it doesn't shudder at all. A/C doesn't work at the moment so I can't check that, - trans fluid is not too low.

Did you check the trans fluid with in 10 sec of turning the engine off, the torque converter will drain out into the tranny giving you a fauls reading. what is your current idle speed in gear ?

Idle speed in gear is about 2000 rpm....

Idle speed in gear is about 2000 rpm....

thats to high for a warm engine

Yeah, my rover 416i manual used to idle at 2000rpm when cold...
I'd be finding a transmission expert quicksmart

Only sometimes idles that high, and it only does it in D4(Drive), not in the lower gears

Got that wrong, when warmed up it idles ta about 1400rpm in D4, in reverse at about 800rpm etc, that side of it seems OK, I'll get it serviced and see if that fixes it,
Cheers Guys
