I have put new O2 sensors into my Gen 3 Prelude in the last six months or so. I found that they actually increased my fuel consumption in the first few tanks then after a long drive and a few more tanks the fuel consumption began to improve. Im wondering if O2 sensors need to be broken in to function optimally or the cars computer takes a while to get used to the new signals that the refreshed sensors would generate. My understanding is the car has a a short term and long term memory for achiving the best air fuel ratio based on sensor output..
Any more scentific explainations???

nah they don't need breaking in.
changing from a rooted sensor to a new one is like getting a new exhaust system. the ecu sorta has to re-learn only coz it got used to the shitty signals it got from the dud.
a new one will provide A/F signals out of the "learned" range of the dud

Did you reset the ECU after fitting the O2 sensors? There is plenty of info on the forum on why it needs to be done after such a big change

O2 sensors dont need to be run in.
as mentioned above, its best to reset the ECU.

yep ECU was reset.... car definatly did not respond to the change in positive way, running rich etc. has slowly improved. I think after about 5 tanks of fuel Im starting to see improvement and economy coming back
