hey ppl, was driving tonight and suddenly i heard my THUD noise under the hood, soon afterwards it happened again. its not loud but doesnt sound to healthy.
it happens when i turn my steering wheel (full circle) then turn back. i can feel it in my steering wheel. i think it might of happened when i stepped on the clutch. im not so sure.
this doesnt happen all the time, just sometimes, usualy at slow speeds is when most noticeble. 3-point turn. straight line its fine.
anyone got any ideas what this could be ?
cheers

CV Joints? Go to an empty car park and drive left and right in full steering lock whilst listening for clicking from the front wheels.

oh crap!!! i went just downstairs to look at the car in idle. i turned the steering wheel left to right to check on my wheels and i find out my left wheel is inverted! its like straight at 1st then as i turn it, it bends and go into negative chamber or something....its bloody scarey think it mite fall off.
what could be the problem with this? i think i heard something snap :O

That doesnt sound to good
Maybe the Axle has dislodged from the gearbox or wheel, or the suspension has come loose or something.
Dont drive it for safety reasons. I would jack the car up, remove the front wheel(s) and inspect the axle, CV joints, and sussy. Hopefully its just a loose bolt. Or get a mech or the NRMA to come around and check it out.
could be ball joints shot??
wonder if its hard to jack it up, take the wheel oout and fix it yourself??

Do you mean when it's on full lock, the right hand inside wheel is on an angle like its leaning over to the right or the left hand wheel leaning over to the left? Forgive me if I'm insulting your intelligence but that's meant to happen to improve steering and stuff. Turn the wheel back to straight and you'll see the wheels go back to basically straight up and down. But if I'm misunderstanding you, get that noise or the dodgy wheel or whatever it is, checked out at a trusted mechanic.

Are your wheels on tight? I was in a friends car and they had taken their wheel off for some reason and not put it back on properly. Man that was scary. I dont drive with them any more....
i went to see this car, and it looked scary. i think he is getting it checked at the mech on thursday.
basically what happen is the left wheel goes in and goes on a angle as it turns from straight to left or right.

I didn't gather that from the previous posts. What model civic is it?
ek4 vtir. prefacelifted model. he got custom rims and superlow springs. apparently he had a prob with his driveshaft and bearing before but it was changed. maybe its his cv

When I first read this "Noise under bonnet what could it be?" I was going to say your engine :p.
As others have said, something to do with drive shaft or cv joints? Let us know what the problem was/is as it sounds a little odd.

hehe Zdster i wanted to say that too!
Anyway looks like a piece of suspension is broken or not in place properly.
Maybe a broken steering arm from what you discribe

Check your radiator and coolant hoses for leaks.
when with the guy today,
while driving, the fricking wheel pretty much f*ed.
control arm came off and the bolt was worn off.
ripped the driveshaft and ABS wiring.
had to get tow truck to lift it.
scaring when this happened while driving.
anyways, installed new control arm with adjustable champers, a new driveshaft and re-wiring of the ABS. its still being services as we speak, getting gearbox, clutch all checked out incase something else happens
ah wellz hope its all good, gona cost 500+ :(
