View Full Version : Installed Spoon Sports Springs

Thought I'd share some pics of our family car, the Honda Jazz VTi.

Today I finally installed the Spoon Sports progressive springs.

The install was dead easy, front corners took me 20 minutes each and the whole rear took just 20 minutes.

Impressions? The Jazz has lost its "tall" feeling when driving it. Less body roll, the ride is surprisingly good, no doubt due to the progressively wound Spoon Springs. Cornering is flatter now. Very good for a 5 door hatch this tall! The wife is pleased, seeing as its her car.

The Jazz rides on 16" ROH Adrenaline wheels with Toyo Trampio GU:WN 205/45R16 87W tyres.
Wheels off.

The rear of the Jazz uses a torsion beam axle. So removal was literally just 2 bolts (not including wheel nuts)

are you using stock shocks or did u get aftermarket shocks too? I am thinking of getting spoon progessive springs and fixed dampers? Any comments vs pedders?

Should be ok now?

Stock shocks for now. When the dampers go then I will get the Spoon fixed ones. Haven't tried the Pedders springs on the Jazz, so I can't say.

Umm the old springs are a good 3cm taller than the Spoon ones.

Here is a pic of it at stock height. I'd say the drop is about 20mm (0.8 inch).

Thanks for the offer Kerim, but that's about it for the Jazz now. The wife had been complaining about the tall feeling when driving the Jazz so now that is fixed. My "car" cash goes into the H22a lude (pictured in the background) :)

Although, I am changing the brakes on the Jazz due to them being worn. Going with Ferodo Exel pads and some x-drilled rotors. The Jazz feels a little under braked, it pretty much can only sustain a couple of hard 100-0kph stops and that's it. The next time you go to try that again, the pedal has gone hard.

Doesn't look lowered to be honest. Maybe its cos of the different angles

Spoon says that its a 20mm drop which is about right because I measured the wheel arch to wheel centre gap. The difference in real life is obvious. And driving it especially. I can so tell that Spoon did their R & D. So refined and balanced.

The wife is wrapt which is the good bit. She has been pestering me to install them for months (had the springs for 12 months).

Ground clearance is now only 115mm measured from the lowest point (front undertray). I do hope she is careful over speed bumps and driveways.

RacingHonda:

I'm thinking of the same Spoon spring myself, and like you, I intend to stick with stock shocks initially (and just change springs only).

One reason I want to change to Spoon spring is that I want to have a better, smoother, supple ride than the stock harsh, jerky, jumpy ride. Since you changed it, how would you rate the ride quality now as compared to before? Is it really better? How so?

Thank you for your feedback.

it looks lower for sure

but its just not THAT low .. thats why the diff is a lil hard to spot .

i'd go another 1.5 cm lower i rkn.

maybe when u get shocks , u can set on a lower perch . :D

lokets - The ride is very good. It is a lot less jumpy than the stock springs. I think its because it is so progressively wound. It is smoother, BUT it IS firmer. Its firmer but less harsh, more controlled. On the bigger bumps, it doesn't bottom out but you do feel the higher spring rate.

Preludacris - yeah I know, but you also know me. Its not for looks. Stroke and control is key, slamming looks nice but its no good if you're bottoming out on mid corner bumps. My lude looks like its stock height even though its been lowered and there is lots of slamming room left on the Tanabes.

Thanks for the feedback. If I get this installed, it is for the same reason as you - firmer, not bottoming out and less jumpy.m I'm not into lowering too much nor really care how "cool" it looks, though these would be nice side-effects.

Just few more questions:

Do you need any spring compressor to swap in the Spoon springs? I heard that compressor is needed to swap back in the stock spring (for the front?). Is that true from your observations?

Besides that, anyone else have comments on whether this spring would fit the 2006 Thai-built Jazz as well? Reason: I would sell my old GLi & move to a VTi some time next year perhaps and if this spring is that nice, I like to have it reused & reinstalled.

RacingHonda: have a good fun sitting on new springs then!

Lokets, no you won't need the spring compressors to remove the stock spring. Just make sure to aim the top of the strut away from people or fragile things when you unbolt it. It will spring off by about 10-20mm.

With the rear, just put the whole rear end on jack stands. Put a jack under one of the rear suspension to hold it steady then undo the bottom damper bolt. Adjust the height of the jack so that the bolt is perfectly level then it will come out easily, once the bolt is off, unjack it and remove the jack. Then jack up the other end and do the same. Once both damper bolts are off the rear torsion beam will just drop down and you can remove the springs.

Don't know about the Thai built Jazz, thing but if they share the same suspension which I am sure it does then it should fit your car too. Its the same car . . .

RacingHonda: how much for the Spoon intake filter (plus shipping)? I'm thinking of the Greddy one (about $80, inc shipping) as well as I'm sick of paying Honda $49.50 for it. And is this Spoon filter washable (the Greddy one is)? Thanks.

I paid $145. Not sure if it is washable.

Apologies if this is a repost:

As the thread said, it probably is just a rare coincidence as I've never heard of any springs breaking, but its a lesson for those looking for second hand parts.
