Lies! this debate has been had several times.

higher octane fuel burns MORE SLOWLY than lower octane fuel.

if you dont change your ignition timing, this means that you are delaying peak cylinder pressure, resulting in the explosion not occuring when the piston is at TDC, meaning you will LOSE POWER.

if however you advance your timing, you will reap the benefits of using this fuel, and the additional air going in, and find that you have MORE power.

98 octane might be good to keep things 'clean', perhaps, but that being said itd only be worth running one tank of it every now and then.

in summary...98 octane on its own = silly, less power

98 octane + advanced timing = more power.

nb...some ecu's are able to automatically advance the timing when higher octane fuel is present, eg newer holder v8's, and this explains why people have dyno sheets to 'prove' that higher octane fuel gives more power - theyre right, theyre just missing the fact that the timing has been adjusted

you said 91 octane was better for "any car". this is not true.

it is NECESSARY if you have advanced you timing.
without advanced timing it will cause you to lose power.

I poured in a full tank of bp ultimate into my 97 civic last time, I didn'tnotice any performance gain, it didn't make the car go any smoother and it didn't give me more KM, so I decided not to bother after that.

stuff some av gas down there (avaition fuel) get it from airports or the local drag strip... may need a licence to get it, i used it on my b18 powered eg and the response was awesome! 104 octane, car rev much quicker and was lots more powerful! this is a no joke story! try it! (not on like a d series tho!)

its 100% illegal, and i believe the fine is $10k per cylinder.
i dont disagree with you that it would be awesome.

i had a guy in at work the other day with a turbo mini-cooper and he said the difference between racing fuel and 98 octane was very noticable, even more so than the difference between 91 and 98 octane

in newcastle we dont have 100 octane haha, does it have ethanol in it?

Your engine will run fine. It's just that the seals that Honda used before 2002 is not guaranteed to be ethanol compatible. Maybe Honda is just trying to play it safe by stating 2002 instead of older (I'm sure the 2001 and 2002 DC5R are identical). But hey, my car doesn't need 100 octane. It's not tuned for it.

u will see a 'E10' (ethanol 10% ok) on the inside of most petrol doors on most of hondas current range :thumbsup:
