Don't think so about the 102 RON.

I use normal Unleaded :P

but when i get my new engine in i will puppy it and give it good juice ...

How does the Caltex one stack up ... i heard it was pretty good, Vortex or something, have used it a couple of times and it made the car run a bit better. 98 octane i think though

go BP ultimate. apart from the 98 ron it also has additives which help keep your engine free of deposits. it also has less sulfur in it - sulfur causes acidic conditions and more engine wear. the less sulfur the better.... and it's cleaner for the environment :)

BP Ultimate > Mobil Synergy 8000 > Shell Optimax

On an interstate run I get better milage out of the Synergy, on a power run the Ultimate is the tank-up of choice. Optimax is if I'm desperate and the other two aren't around. Optimax is the shittiest based on the adatives.

I have never seen 102 octane or even 100 octane. There were boosters for it however.

Hi Guys, I think you need to check out your local supplies. Just because it says "Shell" on the servo doesn't mean that all the petrol sold there came from a Shell refinery. In Qld, WA and SA, Shell don't have 98 octane enabled refineries, so my understanding is they buy it from BP. Being Kwinana in WA and Bulwer Island in Qld. In NSW and Vic it is the reverse, the refinery at Clyde produces something like 25% of Australia's total petrol and the Geelong refinery produces about 50% of Victoria's petrol.

So my understanding is;
In Qld, WA and SA all Optimax and Ultimate is refined by BP
In NSW and Vic all Optimax and Ultimate is refined by Shell
I don't know about Caltex/Ampol, but you can find out by calling the local refinery and asking.

Bottom line, I don't think you can say that Optimax is this and Ultimate is that, it really depends on from where it is sourced.

BP ultimate for me.. i tried mobil 8000 for a few weeks but didnt really like it.. optimax is ok i would choose it as my second choice.

AAAAHAHAHA some people got owned by the upper post :P

Do'h

Mobil is usually my No.1 choice, and Shell every other week... Shell esily gives the best performance but yeah its not a fuel i like to use to often because of its aditives... (got that advice from all the boost junky nissan drivers :P) same goes for ultimate, not that i see ultimate stations very often as all my local ones are "premium 95".

While on the topic of fuel... does anyone else find that their car is lagier with an almost empty tank? When mines getting low it feels a little sluggish... I just say "its struggling on the dregs" like a beer thats gone warm towards the end... tastes like shit. top it up half way give it a squirt and the thing flys... i love filling up... except paying.

PS dude... maybe your best idea would be to run the tank down then try each of them within say a 2 week period since everyone is going on personal experince and no one has the exact same engine as you...

With an octane rating of no lower than 95, and in some markets 96, will satisfy the Octane needs of most cars in Australia.

Horses for courses, but I get better delivery with ultimate, the mobile doesn't rev as well with my B16A but it does give better economy.

your fuel pump struggles to maintain flow in the lines when the tank gets low coz it has to work harder. yeah the smooth power delivery on top up is gold :)

Ok I'll bite....... has there been any tests done between Optimax and BP Ultimate more specific on the actual density of each fuel??

The we can start to talk about 98 octane fuels and N/A hondas.

why not forego the 98 ron and just stick in 104ron... that will give the car a lil ooommmpppffff, will burn very quickly hence keeping the motor clean etc etc... just be mindful of ur cat... :D (not the animal kind)

Isnt Optimax produced / refined by additives to normal unleaded fuel ? *someone clarify before i believe this all my life...*

But in no particular order.....

Mobile Synergy , BP ultimate....then i guess Optimax.
I tried $10 worth of that vortex crap about 1 year ago - and gosh do i regret it. It must be my ancient ZC...because she just ran worse than on 73 RON " Yennora" fuel :S

OH well...it really must be all our different cars !

Just because you add fuel that is higher in octane does not mean that it will produce more power...... there is a possibility for an engine to produce less power with a higher octane fuel than required. Yes this is not BS. It will not burn quicker rather slower than what is optimal in your engine given the compression/boost you are running.

I only have a basic understanding of this concept so would like another party to shed light on it.

I found for me that the synergy gave a slight sulfur smell which is usually an indicator that it isnt burning quite right.
