View Full Version : Suspension Issues - CV Joints?

Hey guys,

Have faced the issue which is associated with many FF cars....The CV JOINTS!

Basically, the car was doing the "clunking" sound which tells you that the cv joints have shat themselves. So, just to check i went to three different places and they all told me CV Joints.

So I acted on this, got a whole new cv shaft, both LH and RH and had them fitted today. Got the car home, and after driving it around for a little while, there was still a bit of the clunking noise remaining, on tight/hard right hand turns.

So ive bought and fitted new cv saafts (even though the car is 55 000kms old!) yet the noise i first heard still remains....

What could this be?
How can i conquer this problem?

NB: The rims i run are new, with new tyres. They are 195/50/15. Thus there is no issues with scrubing etc....

Could it be the rack/steering boots? I was told these were cracked, but the mechanic said there was no issue there.

ALSO: Just another side question - I got a new set of rack boots, yet rather than being a normal set, unbeknown to me, there are offset, which gives you a bit more camber...Is it worth putting these on? Or just going with the normal set? Ill take some photos tomorrow morning and post them up...

Cheers

maybe a bit OT or not, not too sure, but tighten your suspension strut top nuts in the engine bay? and in the wheel arch? maybe the nuts/bolts could've come loose. Or perhaps your front swaybar endlinks and connections. sometimes if they are worn, and under heavy load, they clunk. just get under the car (safely of cos!), and tighten all those fockers.

my sway bars are only about 20 000kms old. the car is around 60 000kms.

possibly the wheel bearings? anyone know how much there are, and how hard they are to change?

sounds like it could be wheel bearings to me if you have new CV's in there.

The wheels arent loose? I know it's a stupid thing to mention, but it could be something as simple as this causing the noise. You mentioned you put new rims on there.

To do a quick basic check on the wheel bearings:
Have the car jacked up and grab the bottom of the wheel and try to wobble the whole wheel. The wheel shouldn't have too much movement at all. If when you wobble if its making a noise and isn't stiff then its most likely the bearings.

i would say wheel bearing also.
i had the same problem, driving and turning and noising in the hood.
the mechanic fixed my driveshaft and had to replace my wheel bearing also.
noise gone.

i had both driveshaft and wheel bearing fixed at the same time.

driveshaft 120, wheel bearing was 220. so all up was 400. (this is including labour)

Be careful here, they gave me hassles. I'm not gonna badmouth the company, just be careful thats all. If they have the bearings you need then thats cool.
