After buying a Daihatsu Sirion my girlfriend has finally seen the Honda light and decided to look at an EG Civic sedan. She was sketchy on the details other than saying it had stock hubcaps, and that it was silver, so I'm not certain what spec it is until I go check it out. Alas, it is an Automajic.

I am just wondering, do you Civic guys know of any common things we should look out for? Water leaks, rust spots, suspension/engine noises, silly little quirks? Should my experience with the Integra have prepared me well for sussing out the Civic?

I'll be scrounging around for info today, and if all goes well, I'll have another Honda around to detail!

Any advice is appreciated.

If it has a sun roof, check it it has rust, if it scratches or grinds alot when it opens, and see if any water is leaking thru.

Check throttle response... it can be an indication of things to come :P

Check wheel arches for ripples or *****s... these are indications or repaired panels, small ripples are fine your checking for big undulations, but be carefull because some people roll the lips and it can get rough. the the boot for leakage and also for inside panel damage... the tyre well is a good place to spot this.

i spose thats all general stuff most of you guys would already know though.

Thanks for the tips so far guys, keep them coming!

It's just a runaround so I'm not expecting anything great, but I do want it to be a reliable mode of transportation, as well as safe. Also, a heads up on problems common always help out.

...oh - there was a saftey recall for all EG civics from factory...for boot-ridden hob-goblins.

And , most breezes are still un-accounted for silly-quick 1.3 single carbs, dodgy engine converions and crimes against the fashion community.

Oh....whoops :P

I hate those damn hob-goblins, it's made our search for a decent sedan so much harder than it should ever be! Hopefully if we find a few they'll be JDM and I can sell them at a healthy profit.

Are they called Breezes cause they need a bit of a tail wind to keep them going? If this one has a black bonnet it's sold!

In addition to the other mentioned things, look for....

Check for Guard liners (splash trays aas well under the front spoiler and engine)If not there, may have had accident or been lowered EXTREMElY low - they are often forgotten items - they also shut out noise and keep out the stones and shit.... are $85 each to replace as well.....

Check all limb - open doors and check the body around the pillars - mis-matches mean cut and shut - check inside the doors, boot, bonnet (all around, Hondas have rippled welds as factory, if they mismatch, again, cut and shut), and most importantly - INSDE PETROL FLAP

Good thing to always check when Buying any Honda would be the ECU for any fault codes, common for civic would be the IACV. take a good look at the rear TA bushes and stearing rack boots for cracks, look at where the pipes leed into the rack for oil leaks. Look for damp carpet in the boot and around door ares if you drive the thing in the wet or if its been wet for a while.

these are just a few things that could cost a bit to fix after you have bought the car.

yeah look for the red led. it should come on silod for two seconds or so when you turn on the ignition II then go out. if it starts flashing then there is a code in the ECU and the LED is telling the story.
