*Sigh*
Had my car serviced in Wodonga before moving back to Sydney (usually I do it myself). Went to do the next service myself and found the sump/plug threaded.
Does anyone know of a good company that could re-tap the thread in the sump (preferably mobile and local to Seven Hills NSW)?
What really p's me off (other than the garage 500km away denying it's their fault) is that I had 2 spare sumps until I sold them off rather than move them around with me.
Cheers
Pete

how bad is it? do they have to insert a new thread (coil)?
most mechanics can do it.. just drive to anyone local..

Looks pretty bad - the nut was chewed up, bought a new one which just wont go in - so it's now undrivable unfortunately :S I got desperate and called lube mobile - they cant fix that sort of thing

I reckon just remove the sump yourself.. buy a tap from supercheap auto and do it yourself... else if u need it rethreaded the rethreading kit cost like over $90.. then in that case, since u already have the sump removed, jsut bring it to a mechanic.. i know one that does it but its at chipping norton .. about 1/2 drive from you...
hahahah else just buy a 2nd hand sump.. if u can find one for cheap

i have the exact same problem...bolt "spins" and is basically held in by 1 nm of force lol.
Perhaps weld the nut in , and tap in a smaller one into the head ?!
Id look at another b16 sump as it might be cheaper and more reliable in the logn run

couple of options are the repair it using a helicoil kit or go to a decent spares shop and get them to find you a sump plug from any brand car in the next size up and also buy a thread tap to suit.
or if your goin to send it to a mechanic just tell them you need your sump plug helicoiled sometimes it helps if you sound like you know what your talking about

I'd look at another b16 sump as it might be cheaper and more reliable in the logn runand while youre at it, build a baffle thing for it like what some OH dude did for his ITR(?)

helicoil kit, lucky when i snapped a waterpump bolt went into mulling fasteners in vic and the guy gave it to me for trade price which was 30bux compared to 75! helicoil is stronger then a normal thread so nothing to worry about the bolt not holding afterwards. ur other option is to buy a new sump! so its pick one or the other son! id shop around and see if i could get a new sump for 100ish, if not try the helicoil... just my opnion.
On my old 200, I changed the sump plug to this fumoto engine oil drain valve. Its a valve that replaces the sump plug, so you never have to take off the sump plug ever again.
I will change this on my Euro also once my service is due. Good value for $50.

QFT :D
Well, I used to track it, just not anymore.
307,000 kms on a B16A without having the engine overhauled and still going strong. :)
Ringing around to find a replacement sump - prolly the best bet - certainly cheaper than quotes I've got.
Nice idea G7G7 - where did you source it from?

you can put a helicoil in it, probably cost about $90
if you can find a tap to suit it, run it throught it, might fix it if its not to bad.
a while ago I found my self in your situation, I had a spare new sump plug, but I could not get the new sump plug to start the thread.
I didnt have a helcoil kit or tap. I found a engine mount bolt ( from something laying around ) that had the same thread. I screwed that in and it fixed the sump thread like a tap would do. New sump plug and washer and good to go.
its wise to run some oil throught the motor with the sump plug out after you fixed the thread, to flush out swarf.
bit ghetto but effective.

I believe Supercheap sell a rethreading glue. Its some sort of metal base which will fix up the thread. It was only like $10 or so. I'd drop in and have a look at it. Otherwose take it off and weld and then retap it.
Or ECUMan's idea is a good one. I've done that before for other items just not a sump.
