Here's a one for the stickys i think. Its the regulations for certain modification and legals on motor vehicle mods.

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi_dl1.html

P.S i've only done the NSW ones cos i knew they were there. I'm sure they are available in other states.

So people asking about legality of wheels, engine mods etc... have a look at this link! (again this one was for NSW people, i'm biased :D )

the NSW "Light Vehicle Modification Guidelines" (VSI06) here:

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi06.pdf

and the similar Victorian "Guide to Modifications of Motor Vehicles" (VSI08) here:

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrpdf/rdsafe/VSI%208.pdf

are both old State based rules that about to be (or have already been) supersceded by the National Code of Practice...

http://www.dotars.gov.au/transport/safety/road/bulletin/vsb_ncop.aspx

The National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification (NCOP) has been prepared by members of the Australian Motor Vehicle Certification Board Working Party in consultation with industry, user groups, government agencies and individuals with an interest in light vehicle construction and modification.

It is important to note that the NCOP is a "live" document and will be updated by the Working Party as required.

Please be aware that the NCOP only represents the technical requirements that must be met - administrative requirements are dealt with separately by each state and territory's administrative guidelines or business rules.

but still EVERYTHING must comply with the ADR's:

http://www.dotars.gov.au/roads/motor/design/index.aspx

summarised nicely here:

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrpdf/rdsafe/VSI%2022.pdf

now this REALLY might be one for the stickies...

useful only if they bother to search before posting

surprisingly, the one for victoria, it doesn't state any legal limit for the volume of exhaust systems..

ADR 28 covers noise, it has never been state based:

The function of this ADR is to define limits on external noise generated by motor vehicles in order to limit the contribution of motor traffic to community noise

Nice work tink.

Anyone got a full copy of the ADR's they can link or post up specific parts of?

tinkerbell

Copy of the ADR short links, you can order a CD for the full ADRs for a cost of course (Govt ain't giving away freebies)

http://www.dotars.gov.au/roads/motor/design/index.aspx

P.S Tink - that first post that you stated only refers to the ADRs it does not supercede the State rules. It only adds the ADRs to them.

Ah well those rules that you said superceed the State rules are just pointing out the ADRs. They've always been around, and the state rules point out when there is an ADR present and overridding. So the rules are still current just need to check on ADRs where the state rules point out. i.e noise

ALL rules are based on ADR's

http://www.dotars.gov.au/transport/safety/road/bulletin/vsb_ncop.aspx

this link shows you what now "superceeds the state rules"

it is called the National Code of Practice.

this is an example of the new "checklist" style of authorisation for modifications,

this one is taken from the "engine" section:

Seems pretty similar to the sate ones, but i guess Govt trying to get their act together. Now they just need to get the licensing tests/demerits standardised.

Have you seen anything on exhaust noise cos i only had that one from EPA. Is there anything new on that one?

limbo - have you been looking in the links i posted, or not?

you will find noise testing is in:

http://www.dotars.gov.au/transport/safety/road/bulletin/pdf/NCOP12_Section_LT_Test_Procedures_3Feb2006.pdf

see pages 23 and 24 in particular

it references the publication "National Stationery Exhaust Noise Test Procedures for In-service Motor Vehicles"

which is a NTC document available here:

http://www.ntc.gov.au/filemedia/Reports/NationalStationeryExhaustNoiseTe.doc

i trust that thsi is what you were looking for

oh, sorry!

assuming you are a petrol passenger car, it is 90dB stationary and 77dB in motion...

The Australian Design Rules are available on CD-ROM. They can be obtained by emailing standards@dotars.gov.au or by following the steps outlined in the subscription/purchase information page.

http://www.dotars.gov.au/roads/motor/design/str_subscriptions.aspx

The cost for the ADR CD-ROM (2nd & 3rd edition) is $70.60 ($6.42 GST included) for the initial purchase and includes postage and the first year's subscription to an amendment service.

pretty pricy, but i bought it as i needed it to put the B16A in my 83 Prelude and the engineer was very strict, so i wanted to know the details of every ADR he was going to be assessing...

maybe PM me if you want?
