Gearbox bearings. Had the same problem - bought a new rebuilt box and it's fine.

Definetely sounds to me like the gearbox. Replace the throw-out bearing in the clutch while ur at it too, as this tends to get quite noisy after a while.

Yup its the gearbox, went through the same problem as Klay, $1200 for me!

On the plus side, the gearbox should last another 250,000kms :D

Yeh bloody oath - you will definetely notice the difference. Feels and sounds like a brand new car :)

But yes... very much so on the expensive side.

I go my new one through Hon Bits for $1,000 - 02 9725 2611

the dreaded Si gearbox of doom.
replace it with a VTi box and driveshafts.

Mine does this also. Never did it for my d16a8 box, but does on my y21 b16a box. Wouldnt mind knowing what it is

Like I said - It's ur gearbox

Once the clutch is let out the main bearing in the gearbox spins even if it's in neutral. Once the clutch is in it stops. Just went through the exact same thing - It sounded fkn terrible.

GEEAARRBOOOXX!!

EDIT: I got my reconned box through Honbits - 0297252611 (it set me back a grand, but that was for an imported ZC box)

Nurries mate :)

If you still don't believe me, then (if you can) take the box out urself, take it apart and you will see that some of the bearings are rusted or worn. The box just splits right in half - saves taking it to someone and paying em just to look at it.

A new box will make it sounds heaps better, trust me.
