Hi guys,

sorry if i'm stupid, but is a ZC motor simply the non vtec original crx motor (the d16a8) under another name or is it from earlier models? basically what is a zc and what car should it be in. I tried to search but zc was too short a term and would not register. the best i found was a thread referring to a d16a8 as a zc, but why not just call it a d16a8 and not make confusion. simple question, but i dont know.

hey mate,

D16A8 is a DOHC non-vtec 1.6L motor found in Australian Delivered 88-91 CRXs as well as some Civics.

ZC is a DOHC non-vtec 1.6L found in the Japanese CRXs and Civics - mainly imported Si models.

Sins got it!

My imported 88 Si has a DOHC ZC motor. Slightly more power than the aus d16a8 I believe??

ZC's have solid tappets aswell, whereas the d16 has hydraulic tappets - unless I'm mistaken..

Yep the JDM ZC has 130hp, whereas the AUDM D16A8 has 127hp.

But I read somewhere that the ZC has 137hp, so its a bit tricky finding the exact specs.

The ZC and D16A8 are virtually identical physically

the 137hp ZCs were found in a limited edition integras in Japan... but I doubt we could find any still running.

JDM ZCs are rated at 130hp and close for the D16A8 as its 124HP :)

all parts are interchangable... im pretty sure all tappets are thesame between the two :)

Cool stuff.

Well then they must both be solid, because mine are.

They must of started the hydraulic tappets in the B series then as my mate has an SiR with hydros.

ZC sounds better :p

Thanks guys, thats pretty much what i was thinking, just couldnt find anything which specifically answered my question. I was just looking at a CRX to buy, it is aus-spec but said imported zc engine and was trying to look it up.

and to all parties, im hella keen on a gen2 CRX, but im in north qld and about 1500km from any CRX's. if anyone can give me advice of where to look or someone to call to get me on the right track that woudl be awesome cause im very limited with just the net to look on and i dont know anyone down south.
