hey guys,

sorry to ask this yet again, but every resource i look at gives me a different answer.

is the EG civic Si that comes with a D16 single cam or double? and is it vtec?
the VTi, is this also another version of the D16 that is single cam?

please somone clear this up for me

I HAVE READ THE PINNED TOPICS ON THIS but the redbook and other sites give different specs.

D16A8 DOHC 1.6L ~96kw
D16Y1 SOHC 1.6L VTEC ~96kw

From what ive gathered, D16A8 provides more power down low, but the VTEC produces more power up high

both have disc brakes. VTi has sunroof.

I have asked a very similar question in my What car to Buy thread.
And from what I have gathered from reading various posts on this forum.
Si would perform better then the Vtec SOHC. Apparently the Vtec EG is a slug down low. Where as the SI is stronger through out the whole range.
On a run down 1/4 from what i have heard. The SI would leave the 1.6 SOHC Vtec behind. Both great cars. I am considering one of the two my self

also on american websites the Vti is referred to as Si. but with the d16z6 motor(similar variant of the d16y1). so that could be where some of the confusions occur.

cheers guys, im goin Si...SOHC.....no thanks

the Si is actually DOHC

also, the Si was produced from the end of '91 to '93 and the Vti from '93 to '95. they were both the top of the range model in the civic lineup.

There's nothing wrong with the SOHC vtec's... ive personally sat in both vti and si and theres nothing too it... they are both basically the same, its just the vti would be a few years newer then the si... and if you ever go to d-series.org you can see which engine the yanks prefer to mod and love more and its not the DOHC ;)

Honestly, I don't think there is too much difference between the two so its up to the buyer. I mean if you have the extra money and want something newer and potentially in better condition then go for the VTi but if you want to do like an engine swap or don't want to spend so much then go for the Si.

I have a SI and i think that its relatively torquey down low HOWEVER
i have been shown that the VTI has more up top
ask dr4g0n ... we always drag and he started to pull top of 4th
where as i pulled alot on him at the top of 3rd

Each way ... it really depends on what ur gona do to the car in the end
Turbo kit or engine swap ...
;)

Im a fan of the Si .. real happy with it

I've bought an Si... I think its a great little car... it was 3000 cheaper than the cheapest VTEC and is in fantastic condition

So which one is better for an engine conversion?
they are both same..
for a conversion both wiring harness has to be modified anyways.
so best for a conversion would be
a EFi EG @ the most cheapest price u can find.

danny is saying somthing with fuel injection so a GLI would b the best bet..
i own a ZC for u's who dont know it is the jdm version of the SI
and it owns vti's

ive raced a dc5r K20A i lost to him by 1 car length.. i have video to prove this
i smashed a vti by 3 car lengths
my m8 with the teg is fairy a newby driver but still 96kw vs 147kw?
you be the judge

For outright power, between SOHC VTEC and DOHC non-VTEC, I'd go DOHC. All you need are more aggressive aftermarket cams on the DOHC and you'll have an engine that is always in high-cam (With little bottom end). But at least you'll have that screaming sound and peak power for the raceway.

WORD!!!..
it'll have low end to if you add lighter fly wheel and a hd clutch with a cold air intake it would pull pretty well for a non vtec motor

i have heard that the d16a8 zc with aftermarket aggressive cams would pull the same as a stock b16a? anyone clarify this for me?

hahhahaa Da1nONLY since you like the si wanna swap motors? lol ;)

Just out of Curiosity how do they compare to something like the N14 Pulsar SSS?

we are only 1.6 SSS are 2.0
if u want to beat them in say an SI u would need light fly wheel , hd clutch
CAI stripp the spare tyre out haha

Hehe. I know of mate that has N14 SSS. I must admit they do go pretty hard.

depends on how you drive it really...
bro whooped a few SSS back in the good old days........ =)
they just have more torque.... but the eg is a lighter chassis compared to the N14/15s....with a decent launch (ride/feather clutch @ 5500rpm sliding all the way to 7200rpm and then quick shift into 2nd while the chirp of the tyres will give you a bit of a push and by the time you realise.. your in 3rd...)...
takes the SSS off the line quiet easily ;)
