Hello everyone.

About a year and a half after i purchased my DA9 i started to notice uneven idle in the RPM some times sitting above 2000rpm and other times it sitting at 900-1000 around where it should. After a few weeks after that it started to not only uneven idle but it jumped from 1000-2000 and reving up and down like i was sitting the gas. After asking 3 different places and machinics i got all different respones
1:It need to be taken in and computer adjusted.
2:It need a whole new part from honda costing over 200$
3:Nothing wrong with it apart from it being annoying and better off living with it then paying the expence.

After reading about this DIY project in the current issue of HOT4's i thought id give it ago.

A dirty Throttle body can cause all sorts of problems.
Uneven idle, slow response and lack of fuel efficiency and even making the car stall.

What you will need
Head to Super Cheap Auto
TFT Part Brush
Nulon Carby and Throttle Body Cleaner

Step 1. Remove the intake pipe.
On my DA9 its just one screw clamp and then a matter of unclipping the intake box.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h293/INTEGGRA/throt1.jpg

Step 2:I removed the 3 pipe connected to the intake pipe. You dont have to do this but its alot easier to get in.http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h293/INTEGGRA/throt2.jpg

Step 3:Remove the Intake pipe right off as i did or if you dont want to follow step 2 you will have to work around it.

The Gold cap is the Throttle Body Blade.

Step 4: Spray the insides with the cleaner i sprayed for quite a while making sure all the black dirt came out.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h293/INTEGGRA/throt4.jpg

Step 5:Scrub the inside using the brush.I found it helped to spray the cleaner on the brush at the same time.

Step 6:Open the Throttle body blades buy pulling on the Throttle with your hand.I also opened it then put the rear end of the brush into the blade to hold it open so i could spray right around.

Step 7: Try remove all the black dirt that is visible you would be surprised to see how much there is.

Step 8: Reattach the intake pipe and make sure you reattach the 3 pipes you removed aswell.Tighten it all off.

Step 9:I crapped myself when i went to turn the car on,They dont mention this part in the magazine. It doesnt start very well when you first go to start it give it abit of gas and it will start up.Mine sounded like a harley for about 5 seconds.

Step 10: Let the car idle it will blow abit of smoke at first and sound abit rough.Once the cleaner has been passed through it will idle smoother and you will notice the difference.I ran mine for about 5 mins.

Doing this i really noticed a improvement in the RPM very much so when over 3500rpm it feels alot more presise.

But the main thing was it stopped doing the stupid reving and is sitting on a even idle.I drove for about 30 mins after and it is still in the correct idle.
Very well worth the 15$ and the 30 mins i spent doing it.Took a while longer taking the photo's haha.

Just thought id share and if you got a spare 15$ bucks and half a hour of your time i suggest you do this! Very happy with it and well worth it.

Just if you stuff anything up dont blame me ok!

Did this to the TB on my car on the weekend, looked clean inside at first but after spraying the cleaner in quite a lot of build-up etc came out..

Made a big difference to my idle - a lot more consistent now and overall car just feels smoother, defintely recommend this diy!

I tried this as well. I drove it a bit right after I cleaned the TB and noticed it revved freer. The next day I disconnected that battery to install a stereo. Then I drove again...however it idles about a 50 rpm range up then down and up then down (in a range from about 1000rpm to 1050 rpm)...So does anyone know what has happened?

Did this around a few hours ago on my car.

I too was suprised with the amount of junk that had accumulated in the TB. I gave it a good old scrub with a tooth brush as well (no my own personal one :P) and it was looking pretty smhick.

Car was a bit of pig to start but gave it some revs and held it a 2thou rpm for a minute. Defo an improvement rev range!

A must for any new comers into DIY (like myself)

Good write up too.

if you're really conscious on how clean your tb is, you should do this every 6 months.

thats probly because u reset the ecu and its relearning all the air fuel maps

hey bro if it was really dirty then u have to let the ecu get use to it
ur probly getting more air into the engine now that the intake and TB are clean
its like when u just put in a new "hiflow" intake, the ecu needs to adjust to the new "mod"

i noticed the rpm was at 2K... then later on dropped 2 1.5K...

should i reset the ecu... ???

thinking of doing this, would it be better to completly remove the tb and clean it? im a little wary of washing the gunk off my tb into the engine, should i be or am i just paranoid?

It would be better, but too much arsein around for too little concern.

Ur prob gonna stuff the gasket & need a new one, gotta pull off fitv, iacv, cable, blah, blah.

u dont wash it off anyway, just spray the cleaner, till its clean.

no dont adjust the throttle yet, if it wasnt doin it before it shouldnt do it now, once u've reset the ecu should be ok

did u reset the ecu right, ie take out the backup fuse as well?
did u let the car idle for a while to get use to the clean TB?
is the car trying to warm up from a cold start?
drive around for a while, let the car warm up and get up to normal operating temp(engine fan on twice) before u do anything

im going to try and clean the IACV 2day... maybe while i was cleaning the TB a lot of that black stuff got into the IACV and made some sort of blockage... ill clean it and see if that improves it...

heres me cleaning my TB...

you've been a dirty throttle body havent you?
http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/687/dsc02265ad3.jpg

Started giving it a bit of spray
http://img453.imageshack.us/img453/5697/dsc02270gg0.jpg

after a bit more of a spray and brush
http://img453.imageshack.us/img453/2695/dsc02271rm1.jpg

I spent so long cleaning this... there was so much crap inside, layer upon layers... its a good idea to wipe all the inside of the intake tube and inside the TB...

Your filter is meant to keep dirt out.... I think you should consider a better brand of pod filter. Which one are you using now?

K&N filter material is almost see-through. It relies heavily on the filter oil to trap dirt.

AsH_
11-12-2006, 04:05 PM
cant see thru the filter, wen i took it off it was a mud filter...

i sprayed water thru it for like 15min...

then i oiled the hell outta it...

i should still buy a new one, coz minez old...

aaronng
11-12-2006, 04:33 PM
I meant a new K&N. It's literally see through. You can look through the panel filter material and still watch TV.

And you can't spray water through it. You need to use the cleaning kit's detergent. Get a new one anyway. Something dry would be nice and you'd avoid having dirt stuck everywhere (it sticks because it has been "oiled" by the filter oil)

dundas
11-12-2006, 10:35 PM
yeah that is one big bad thing about the oil based aftermarket re-usable filters. u need to hose it off, then use the cleaning stuff and hose it off again if it is really crappy.--- well anyways. just exsperiement with a bunch of em .. and get back to us someone :)

yeh i used the K&N cleaning kit... worked well... but ill probly replace it anywayz...

how long do those podz normally last on avg??

aaronng
12-12-2006, 10:51 AM
K&N claim "lifetime of the car". If I remember correctly, the back of the box said 1,000,000km warranty on the filter.

Clean the IACV. http://ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4693

It's interesting that sometimes it is the gunk that is "partially jamming" the throttle body that keeps your idle consistent.

So the idea is to spray the cleaner on the throttle plate, around the cylinder and as deep/far as possible into the throttle body behind the throttle plate then just wipe off as much dirt as possible?

Obviously you can't clean the dirt that is deep into the throttle body, just the dirt visible right?
