View Full Version : Exhaust smell inside Euro
Is it just mine or does anyone else notice that the Euro seems to pick up the exhaust fumes of the car ahead really often, but not all the time? I've got an Accord as well, and hardly ever notice this smell coming inside the cabin.
Given that the Euro has the ventilation filter,i thought this would be even less of a problem. At first i thought it might be an exhaust leak somewhere, but because its not there all the time, that seems unlikely, the cars only done 8000ks and its been there since new.Does anyone else notice this??

change the airflow to "circulate" rather than "induction" ?
Yes,but is it normal on the Euro to pick the smell up so easily.I run the Accord on "outside air" and dont notice it anywhere near as much.

i had exhaust smell inside my car once, turned out to be leaky middle, pipe. if it is most noticeable when you are stationary, this could well be your problem. settings for aircon/fan shouldnt make any difference if there are no leaks

Use recirculate. The pollen filter in the Euro is just that, a pollen and dust filter. In order to filter exhaust fumes, it needs aa activated carbon filter instead.
And yes, when I am drawing in outside air, I smell the exhaust of the car in front VERY quickly.

Yeah I smell exhausts quickly too, probably because the Euro's vents are larger and more powerful than smaller cars like civics and teggy's. Plus in older cars, the filters may be dirty and therefore limiting the air input.
lol that would be a good feature - a sensor in the air vent that senses excessive cabon monixide and turns on recirculation automatically :p

After looking at the pollen filter tray, there is no reason not to have 1/2 the filter consisting of activated carbon and the other half a particulate filter. THen you could have clean smelling air and no dust at the same time. Now you only need to find someone who makes it in that size.

I always thought it unfair that here we are driving an LEV but we're the ones suffering from picking up the exhaust fumes from other cars which are damaging the environment.
I guess its like passive smoking... hmmm. I turn the re-circulation on, but it only makes the ventilation smell mouldy whenever you turn it off again. I press that button on and off around 20 times each day due to this problem. YES, I agree the Euro picks up more exhaust fumes than most.

Isnt there an exhaust fume regulation that cars have to pass for Rego?
Some cars are so bad (especially old 1985 ford lasers) that I wander how they ever pass Rego with such a foul smell...
Thanks for all that input guys.At least its not just my car.I guess i'll stop hassling the dealer and change the air to recirculate and just live with it(small price to pay)Mabye this should be added to the list of things we dont like about our Euros.

What fan setting do you set it to?
If you set it to the lowest setting, its not too bad.
Yea,its set on lowest speed most of the time, 'cept when i'm trying to ventilate the heat real fast when i first hop in.

You could check the vents in the back but you will have to remove your bumper to check them.

Does anyone know if installing the HEPA filter accessory may help?

What do you mean by "accessory"? The Euro comes with it standard. HEPA can't filter out smells. Only activated carbon filters can.

Ahh ... didn't know that about the HEPA filter. I thought I remember seeing a special pollen HEPA filter in the accessories brochure.
