I notice that when people see an auto tranny in a car, they go nice car shame its an auto though. Nah just a comment i heard about a mates integra. Most auto trannys are high tech and offer great performance. Just a question when you put 3rd gear the one below D is it the same as manual ? Also 2nd gear is it same as manual ?

Third gear in Auto goes, well past 110Km/h, manual gear ratios prolly abit lower speed. Third gear is the most common gear used to get the revs up racing and round corners.

What exactly are you asking?
Are they the same ratio? No their not
Remeber the autos are 4 speed while the manuals are 5, so theres an extra gear that needs to be "made up"

Plus you lose a little bit of power through the torque convertor on the auto.

i've recently started variating between 3D and 4D, to differentiate the rev range. i drop into 3D when going around corners, going up hill, or if i wanna spike my revs i drop from 4th to 3rd.

ultimately, its not the same as a manual, but you have a little bit more control over the way your car reacts and performs. it probably also shortens the life of the gearbox significantly, so i don't do it all the time. just during periods of spirited driving on some winding roads

why do you drop gears manually when u could just accelerate harder and the car will drop gears by itself...

A well timed blip of the throttle between downshifts makes the auto tranny shift down quicker, but also, I went through 3 gearboxes in my old ford laser years ago now from racing it auto-style (shifting the gears through the range on an auto) ..

Not recommended :P

Because you are then limited to the auto controller dictating at what throttle pressure and what speed the gears change. A bit unpredictable (not as controlled).

that, and my kickdown cable is particularly unreliable, ie, it will shift a lot earlier than i wanted it to.

i should really stop "racing auto-style" anyway.. its a daily driver, very unecessary

Guys, the thing you are all forgetting to mention here is that racing isn't just 'bout how quick you can get to speed.
I'm talking about CONTROL!! The more your car does for you, steering braking and gearing, the less overall CONTROL you have over it!!

Although many of the worlds top drag cars sport an auto variant, these are not ur daily automatic transmissions, built for a "nice", "quiet", "smooth", "comfortable" shift.

Besides, who wants to drag anyway, corners are much more fun!!

Think about this, everyone loves DRIFT at the moment, i can pretty much guarantee you none of them drive autos... in fact i think you would find about as many civics on a drift track as you would auto's!

Learning to drive in the hills, i very quickly learned the importance of driving a manual car. The control you have through the mountain roads is far superior in a manual to that in an auto, making it far safer!

Any way, all that aside... the best part of driving a manual.... FUN, far more FUN than an auto!!:honda:

changeing the gears around whilist the car is in motion is the most easiest way to kill your auto box..

haha blu3illusion84 is your auto box playing up ? When its done go for a manual conversion, seems like its not that expensive. Especially a d series box shouldnt cost too much. Love your philosphy Kiz_EG6.

rippin it normally without shifting (D4) petal 2 the floor redlines for my civic sedan depends on how flat u push the pedal, sometimes i redline at 7100rpm (wierd) and 1st gear gets up to 60km 2nd gets up to 110ishkm. theres no use in shifting it like a manual. i only use the gears to down gear in emergencies

lol when i drove auto ek1 sedan, i shifted likethat for 'spirited' driving

just drop to 3rd before corner...

i knew it wasn't good for my gearbox, but frankly, i was surprised at how good condition it was in when i sold it

hey, cheers, manual convo should't be too much of an issue!!
Can't speak from experience, but ur pretty much gonna need a pedal cluster, gearbox, clutc, a few otha goodies and a friendly mechanic!! :)

i love auto for the cruisiness

driving a manual on anything smaller then a 2.0L is crap... feels so labour intensive....

autos are all round easier for daily driving but if u want more control and be able to leave it in gear longer/drop it down quicker u need a manual. and imo u need a manual more for a smaller engined car if u want to get the most power out of it. also, as mensioned in other threads, the auto boxes can really suck power out of engines and cut down 0-100 times etc. of course if u dont want to do that and jus want a comfortable daily driver then auto is ur best option :) which is y MT's in many mid/large sedans are still relatively uncommon as the drivers usually dont drive them aggresively...

Auto and Manual are different, Auto for daily and relaxing drives, at least you've got a fairly relaxed left leg, manual great for more control over the car, making the car the way you want it, etc

I've done some research into Auto's though and there are ways to improve it. Okay, lets say you want to convert your car to a manual cause you would like 'a sportier feel' and 'like to accelerate better' but your not happy about the idea of having to play with a clutch or afraid to stall at the lights, etc. I can tell you, depending on your auto tranny, etc you can have somethings changed in your auto tranny to make up for this.

Okay, from the factory floor, most auto trannys are setup very conservatively, this is due to the fact of the low cost components put inside. So changing some of these parts to more durable and generally heavier duty stuff allows it to handle more power and allow the computer shifting to be more aggressive.

Link to a description and analysis of auto trannys - http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm

By changing these components, you already can improve the auto tranny by a long shot.

Now if you like to go further, you can program the auto tranny to act like a manual similar to the sequential/tiptronic setup. 1st is of course first gear, 2nd is... blah blah blah and 4th gear is usually the overdrive I think from memory, this is done through the programming unit that the Auto Tranny Specialist have. Auto Transmission Specialist do exist and its a lot cheaper than a Manual conversion cause the parts and labour are cheaper. You might want to consider than. I know this because I help a mate with his Soarer Auto, it was pretty good off factory floor but after changing I think from memory the clutch plates and the bands to heavy duty stuff, it was quickier and felt much sportier...

Hope this helps!

agreed.im in the process of converting my automatic 180sx to manual. main reason; my auto is playing up cos i played with the gears too much. (driving a low-powered manual car daily makes me fiddly)

Personally i rather just put my foot down and let the auto do the job
rather than putting stress on the auto and pushing it
