hey guys

Basically For a high hp boost potential setup, what would be the better choice between these two motors? The D16A8 (DOHC non vtec) or D16y1 (SOHC Vtec). If all had the same internals, same management, same turbo and bolt on's etc etc.

Let me know all your opinons!!

Thanks in advance!

Ps in a high powered turbo setup, would you benefit more from the Vtec, Head design and flow of the y1 or the Twin Cams from the a8?

imo d16a8. no vtec can be a blessing sometimes. less to worry about/tune.

obd1 d16a8s r cheap as, this for your eg mate?

yep sure thing for my eg, i have started building my y1, but an a8 has come available at a similar stage to my y1 and i dont know which to complete. As i am going to be wanting something, very very strong, with lots of power and something that doesnt tend to have silly problems.

id go d16a8 build mate, the dohc does really help even tho on paper stock a8 vs y1 is the same.

tuning will be easier too, BUT with everyday more and more info and stuff is coming out so i guess itll be ok both ways.

did u have a turbo d15? what happened to that? gone?

You might be able to get more aftermarket parts for the single cammer........but IMO the D16A8 head would be better for flow and turning via adjustable cam gears.

Yeh i know what you mean, majority of people have been reccommending the dohc. Also will i still be able to utilise a Hondata on the a8?

Yeh i still got the turbo d15 ;) it rocks and is heaps of fun. Im building a setup outside of my car so i can still get around in my honda and not take it off the road.

its correct that the y1/y8 has more parts availible from the US market.
(since the ZC/d16a8 wasnt released over there there is a very small userbase.)

IMO id grab a nice head package from the states for the single cammer + port out + aftermarket ECU/piggy back and other bits n pieces. Or turbo the thing :)

Incase you havent seen em - look at these sites -

D-series.org (http://www.d-series.org/?)

TheZCResource.com - TheZCR.com (http://www.thezcr.com/)

I don't understand why people are saying the vtec motor is so much harder to tune... it really isn't...

we don't get the y1 here in the states, but if it's equivalent to the y8, I would definetely go that route

saxman, our Y1 is equivalent to your Z6... which seems to be the most popular motor interms of being used to go N/A for a D or Boost... theres some really nice numbers being put out with boosted Z6's or Y8's.

in that case, y1 all the way

the z6 sounds to be the better option, only because there is a large variety of aftermarket performance parts available. However if you got all custom stuff make up for the a8, (Eg Custom ground turbo cam shafts) potentially this engine could make better power(but only at a greater cost)

What do people think? correct if wrong

Yeh your right, heaps and heaps of turbo kits available for the d16y8 engine. But even for the other engine a custom turbo kit will still give very good results. Just browse the american forums youll get better knowledge, and see how much power there pumping out and 1/4 mile times.

Lyle either way... which ever motor you go with... with what you have planned for it... im sure they will both perform well ;)

acs engineering.

both CRX's have d16a8's with similar set ups. although i wont speak on their behalf :D but the only information i could give you that the white CRX has run (i think, from memory) 11.7 qtr mile and the Blue (unsure) around mid 12s

there are stock internalled eg civics out here running d16z6's in the 12's...

you can make plenty of power with either choice, I just see a lot more potential and ease of set up with the z6 and the higher flowing vtec head

my vote is the y1/z6.

there is just heaps more support for it. it would be easy to source any hi-performance part for it.
