use a car battery power to the starter motor ( installed properly on the car) and a proper ground and it should "turn the motor" over. Make sure the engine is held down because the intertia will flip the thing on its side.

make sure you put the black lead on the block and the red lead on the starter motor,

( I was experimenting above )

take off the oil cap and pull the dipstick out and make sure there is none of that coffee coloured residue on it which indicates water in the oil suggesting a blown head gasket. this is one of the things id look for.

Check water pump & belt conditions - however, I reccomend these be changed regardless if the engine is out of the bay, not only will it save you a heap of hassle/money down the track, but will let you have assurance that the engine wont screw up when in your car.

Also check the condition of the clutch/flywheel. Worthwhile when removed from car...

Also, squeeze the coolant pipes, if it feels rough/crunchy may be because there is rust buildup in the block from neglecting owner.

I'll jsut peek into rocket cover.. and look for sludge.
Pull dipstick out and look for coffee (as suggested).,.

and also pull the radiator hose out to look for the motors age.

The more corroded the higher the k's on motor.
