i drive with shit cv joints all the time
mine go every couple of months so ive given up !!!

where did you get quoted this ?

i usually get mine changed for around the same price with 12 month warrantly.. and since mine are always blowing i go back just before the 12 months is over and get them changed again for free ;)

dumping the clutch

dumping the clutch doesnt do anything to the cv's unless youre doing it at full lock, or close to it.

cv's are damaged in one of two ways:

a) the rubber boots get torn/break off and dirt enters the grease that is packed around the joint. something the size of a grain of sand can be the downfall of the entire joint if it gets in deep enough, and is there for long enough

b) too much power is being applied when the cv's are at the extremities of their movement. this can happen in more than one way:

i) you fang it on full lock, which is just stupid anyways
ii) your car is lowered. the degree of stress on the cv's increases as your car gets lower. why? because on a normal suspension setup, travelling in a straight line, the cv's are relatively straight, and not strained much at all. when your car is lowered, most of the time the cv's are now on an angle, which increases the load on them. basically the same effect as if you were steering 24/7.

when my car was on bricks and had no wheels i took it to 250kmph and i broke 3 of my CV boots. so speed is a factor :P

does it make clicking sounds when you turn left or right?
if it does your joints are gone
if its just a hole in your boots change em before they click

most likely the right side outer cv joint needs to be changed

LO_N_SXC
14-08-2006, 05:19 PM
nope its the opposite, if yur turning right then the left outer CV extends making that clicking sound, just have a look under yur car and you will see that the boot will be split.

FR33K
14-08-2006, 05:30 PM
well it depends..
are you talking about look directly at the car from the front
or looking at the car from the back

LO_N_SXC

Now Now Andrew dont play smart, we all here know that all hondas appart from S2Ks and NSXs are FWD, so to answer your question just in case you didn't know you will have to be looking at it from the front.

LO_N_SXC
14-08-2006, 05:38 PM
Oh and to be more specific in case you ask, CRVs and HRVs are 4WD

FR33K
14-08-2006, 07:13 PM
so.. the way you look at it.. the right hand side is the passenger side ?

LO_N_SXC

so.. the way you look at it.. the right hand side is the passenger side ?
Well it would be common sence, if the ticking occurs when you're turning right then you will have to look under the passangers side, and if it hapens when you turn left you would have to look on the drivers side.

So did you understand that or do I have to draw it for you?

ps: jks mang!

where would u be able to get a guide as to changing the boot??

Adam

TRU32U

a guide??
u can do it urself but its gonna take a while... might as well change the shaft...
basically take off wheel loosen suspension, then itll drop out
but that takes about 30 mins alredi for an adverage person, then when u got the shaft off u gotta take the boot off and rah rah rah might as well change the shaft.

yeah, i've never done any of this b4 so im a bit skeptical about doin it myself... my boot split in half about a month ago and there is still no clicking noise, so does that mean my CV joints are still fine??

yeah, but did you read teh second post by fr33k, dirt gets in through the split in the boot and then your cv eats itself alive
