Hi All,

My windscreen on my 95 VTI-R has a crack on it. Nice big 20cm right in front of the drivers face.

I remember reading that the Type R has a thinner and lighter windscreen. Is this a normal thing people can get if they call up windscreen o'brien or whatever? Or do I have to go to a special place?

I figure if it's not too much more expensive, I may aswell get the lighter one for my VTI-R.

Thanks

It's a 900.00 upgrade to get the thinner windscreen.

woah...for that price who would want to upgrade...just go the standard replacement.....

ring around...I got mine from frank's auto in cabramatta for $100 - $150 cheaper than windscreen obriens....and forgot from honda direct its very expensive.

If you want a thinner windscreen for weight reduction on your VTIR. I'd suggest spending the money on going to the gym...

A lightweight windscreen will save you about 3kgs max.

i agree with felix.

consider also the fact that the windscreen plays an integral role in providing stability to your roof (i have no idea if the roofs of vtirs/type rs are contstructed differently). there are many other weight reduction paths to follow before going down this route, eg wheels, interior, stereo, cf bonnet etc.

They are different.
Type R's have no sunroof, therefore are likely to have a stronger structural roof compared to a VTIR.

well there you go, i didnt know that. since the vtir would have a more flexible roof it would seem logical for it to have more support elsewhere, eg windscreen.

however what it will come down to is whether the type r windscreen offers the same strength, in a thinner size. if that is the case it shouldnt matter, but i maintain its a lot of effort for not a lot of weight reduction

i dont think honda manufacturers will comprimise the strength of the windshield and the safety of the buyers by jus chucking on a light weight product..

it is the same strength the only think is that it is thinner.. and being thinner means that it lets a heap more noise in..

and if it cost 900 to upgrade to a lightweight one.. unless u live on a track and every second counts.. screw it.. jus get a normal one

I doubt a windscreen adds very much strength to roof supports at all. Surely it has to be the weakest point at least.

And i have heard that a sunroof with its required reinforcing makes the turret more structurally sound.

Get the regular glass. Oh - and I think Windscreens O'Brien went broke this week...

What other options in brisbane do I have? Somewhere cheap, as this thread seems to prove, there isn't any difference.

you only have 3 choices:
1. honda dealership
2. windscreens o'brien or equivalent
3. honda wrecker.

is that $900 over the cost of a normal windscreen?!

The Type R's have a lot of other bracing going on all round the chassis so it is believeable that they could sacrifice some strength in the windscreen if it is such a structurally important element.

Windscreens are responsible for holding a considerable amount of weight in the event of a flip, and also it will save your face come the day that a rock comes off some1s tilt truck and hits your windscreen.

With these two safety factors in mind, i do not see the justification in purchasing the lighter windscreen if you are only going to save a few kg. This weight can so easily be offset by
-the sh1t up your ass
-the text books you have in the back
-your subs and amp
-any large rounded lady you may be carrying.

If you wish to just have bragging rights, the above does not apply.
